NWR: NaNo?

...NaNoWriMo?
...National Novel Writing Month?
Beuller?

I realized we were halfway through October last night and now I'm in hardcore planning mode for NaNo. I know @falsara is a writer, but I also know she's got a lot of school going on. I hope I'm not the only NaNoKnottie.... anybody else gonna join me?

Re: NWR: NaNo?

  • I've been doing NaNo for a decade or so. I haven't checked to see if the site's been rebooted yet. Good luck!
  • I would love to join you, but I have a feeling I'll be drowning already with work and the organic chemistry and abnormal psych classes I'll be taking. Not to mention all of the applications I'll be filling out for grad school.  =/  Boo!  Good luck though!

Attempting to fix quote boxes that show up in my editor...... grr. Has been. Dashboard's been updated, but the Author pages haven't yet.
ETA By this I mean that they look exactly the same as they always have and I want a change there. I liked last year's Dashboard. I don't like the Author pages. Also, I want to have the ability to change my username.

    Good luck to you too!

@levioosa, nothing ventured, nothing gained... :D

  • I used to do it all the time back in....errr....high school?  College?  I think I'm going to try it again this year.

I can't believe it's almost here, eeep.  Wanna be my acountability buddy??

  • Thanks for the shout out!

Even though I have school I'm still participating in a sense, being that instead of the requisite 50,000 at the end of the month, I have a personal goal to have 25,000 words at the end of the month done on a new work.

I'm super excited, even though I have none of this actually planned out.  I might do something historical though.

  • @slothiegal YES I like that idea. I know I'll need it myself, haha. I'll waste all my time here. Also, I discovered NaNo's forums today. Useful and also completely a time sink, I bet.

@falsara I am actually working on an idea that I abandoned two years ago because of school/work commitments. It has a lot of potential, so any amount I get will make me happy. (I HAVE NO EXCUSES NOT TO WIN THOUGH. Not this year.)

Hopefully I can kick myself off TK long enough to get somewhere, haha. :D

  • I would love to contribute those 25,000 words to the one I've been working on steadily, but I need an outpouring of my random ideas write now.  I need to expel my "Writing Vomit".  Nothing I write starting on November 1st will be worthy of any contest/ publication.

Plus I feel since I'm already altering part of the spirit of it by cutting the word count in half, I'm trying to stay a bit true to the original idea.

  • Nope.

I have comics, cosplay, general art projects and mother fucking Christmas to prepare for/procrastinate. I cannot add another item.

  • I've never participated because (get ready for this one) I just can't stand the effing acronym. Truth. If I had to say it out loud, I'd shudder. When my friends say "Nanowrimo," to me, I cringe, and a nerve twitches in my face. It's just the worst word ever.

I think writers should have been able to come up with something better.

I may give it a try this year, because I have a pretty good (vague) outline I've been slacking on. Major procrastination.
But I'm not saying it. Or I feel hatred.

Just call it NANO! You write a nano-novel (because lets be real 50k is not a whole lotta words for a novel) in a nano-amount of time (because 50k IS a lot to write in 30 days) with people who have nano-sized brains and can't come up with a clever acronym!!! :D:D:D

If your writing is any bit as creative as everything else you've posted, I would lap that shit up.

  • That is so kind you may have talked me into it. But I'm calling it by the full name. National Novel Writing Month. Because if writers don't respect the language, who the hell will?

Confession: I haven't finished a novel in almost 14 years. I became addicted to short stories. They don't require the kind of commitment a full blown novel does, and if I decide to throw one away, I don't feel like I've wasted a year of my life. On the other hand, there's no money (or very very little) in short stories.
And I feel guilty because my hiatus has just lasted too damned long, and I need to get back on it. It will be good for me. So almost ready to say, why not?
     I'm a writing commitment-phobic. (Nanocopho?)
  • I thought this thread was going to be about nanotechnology. Shows what field I spend my time in.

  • @ohannabelle YAY! @inkdancer YAY! @chibiyui while I get your reasoning... party pooper. :D

I totally get the short-story loop. I do like the not-blowing-a-year part. But there's always more I want to know about the people in my head, and I can't ever seem to leave it at The End with short stories, so I end up with a billion billion useless short stories.

  • Every time I write a short story I end up regretting I didn't make it a novel.  Then I try and expand it by writing extra plot points into the major storyline and in the end it just doesn't work as seamlessly as I hope it will.

Dude, I like haven't finished a project since I graduated. I NEED TO FINISH SOMETHING BEFORE I START SOMETHING NEW.

  • I've done it, technically, three years.  First year, I lost, writing about 15k words.  Second year, I won writing about 52k. Third year (last year), I signed up but never actually wrote anything or tried at all.

I was planning to do it this year (actually have a good idea), but hadn't thought about it until just now.  Thanks for the reminder!

What what what? You can lose? This is a win/lose thing?
I thought it was just an enthusiastic hey let's all write like hell thing. Nobody told me I could lose.
    I hate losing.
  • I have a bunch of starts to novels saved on my computer. I'm always so consumed by research writing for school that I never give my personal writing the due diligence it deserves. I always say I'm going to doing NaNo and then end up not having the time. Maybe this year...but probably not since I still need to finish my thesis and that eats up all my writing energy these days.

  • This will be my 6th year of NaNo, but I have yet to win. Life seems to like getting in the way - I've lost my job, lost my manuscript (no backup), had pneumonia, gotten distracted by the cute boy sitting opposite me at the Write-Ins...

I actually met FI through it in 2011, and part of the reason we chose our date (other than my love of Fridays and 1s and 3s) is so that we can NaNo again this year without our wedding getting in the way!

Two other couples have come out of my region alone, and quite a few more from around the country. My ML keeps threatening to open up a NaNo Singles Column!

Eh, if you fall short, you "lose". And all you really get is a printable certificate if you win. Winning and losing is nigh on ignored, it's just terminology everyone recognizes.

@bethsmiles and @Chibiyui, I get that, haha. I've done it nine years in a row, and seven (eight?) of those I've ended under 20k. I mean last year I got (wait for it) 7(!!!)k. That's it.

Yay @KytchynWitche‌ and also that is absolutely adorable.

Well, technically if you don't make it to 50k words in a month, you lose.  However, winning is basically a self-pride thing.  You could easily lie and just put in xyz number into the word counter and say you "won."  There's no real prize if you win except bragging rights, a certificate and you get some discounts on stuff like writing software or self-publishing stuff if you want.

Also, I signed up today!  Super excited!  I'm putting a word count widget in my sig!
  • I need to do this, but with work, I just really don't have time right now.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

Bump away, chick! I was thinking about this thread. I need to put a widget in my signature tooo omg I didn't know that was a thing. Never had a place to put it, since NaNo's forums just sort of stick your WC under your profile picture, and this is the only other forum I participate in. Yay!

I will say that I SWEAR by that writing software. I used it on a 30-day free trial (oddly enough Scrivener promoted HARD on the first day of November.....) for the only NaNo I won, and it helps SO.MUCH. for organization and outlining. I'm mostly a pantser outside of NaNo, but I gotta have a plan and know exactly what I'm going to write that day during NaNo for it to work. And then I gotta have two-three hours to block out, a good internet filter system (Bye Knotties....) and coffee.

  • *Bump*  Well, it's started!  How are you all doing with word counts?  I am procrastinating, but really ought to get today's word count done while H is at work.

I did the daily word count yesterday after writing four 400-word plus news articles for work.  I came home and really did not want to write more, but I did.

I couldn't decide between two story ideas.  I had one idea for the past month but randomly found my "ideas" document on my computer and found another idea I was excited about. I couldn't decide so I smashed the two ideas together (no, I didn't meld them or weave them or intertwine them, I SMASHED them) and am doing that.

    Good luck to you all!
  • I write progress notes that are maybe 300 words each several times a day. Does that count?

  • I suppose?  I'm not sure what you mean by progress notes.

Haha I wish. Larrygaga is speaking about her necessary writing for work, not personal writing.

    image   image   image

  • Unfortunately, my dear @larrygaga, progress notes don't count (although really there aren't any real rules and it's totally honor based, so you could, I guess...). I wish though! I do about about 1500 words daily for Bossman.

I did 4200 over the weekend so I had a little bit of cushion for the work week. I've got two words total today - but the day is yet young, and we'll see what we get. My idea attacked me the morning of, @lovesclimbing - I'd been planning on a whole entirely different story since September and I woke up with something COMPLETELY different and just sort of ran with it. It was so far out of left field I really have no idea where it came from. :D Love that you're doing it though!
