I despise people who are shitty to retail or low wage workers. During college I worked at an Olive Garden to try to put a dent in student loans. As a server or bartender, we had to pay in 5% of our gross sales for the day to pay the bussers and whatnot. And on top of that we only got paid $2.17 an hour. We paid taxes on the money we were forced to pay for tipout as tipout was labeled as wages we chose to donate. They are also very bad about following through on offers for promotions. After two years of working that hellacious job, they offered me a position in management. They required that I move to a location 900+ miles away and complete their two month training program. I accepted the offer, movedto a place where I knew no one, and completed the training only to have the store manager there tell me that I was going to be kept on as a server only so he could promote some new girl who had no experience and had not done any of the training. He then proceeded to inform me that since I would not be receiving the promotion I had veen offered that they would not pay a penny of my travel expenses to attend their stupid training program for two months. I was furious and promptly quit. I refuse to ever go to any Darden restaurant again. They are super shitty to their workers! I am so thankful that I started a new job earlier this year!
Pretty sure the bolded is illegal. 5% of gross sales is a lot!  That sounds super shady.

The restaurant I worked at was kind of honor code, but if all your tables drank wine, and you never went to the bar, you didn't have to tip the bartender (because you didn't use them). And if the busser sucked, then you didn't tip them as well.  The percentage was based on the tips you got.

Also, always put the automatic gratuity on a large bill, especially over a thousand dollars. That was absurd to risk that. Live and learn i guess.

  • I once had a woman go off on me about the location of our fitting rooms.  "so sorry, would you like me to build you your own private fitting room?"  Another one yelled at me for asking for ID when the signature had rubbed completely off her credit card.

So glad I left retail and got my nursing degree.  I'd rather clean up shit than catch it any day.

The IRS actually figures out your taxes based on 10% of your sales (it assumes that that is what your'e taking home as tips, so if you declare less then you risk being audited or in getting yourself into deep doo-doo).

Low-tippers don't really take this into account either: Let's say that an average meal is $100 at a restaurant (it's not, but that just makes for easier math). A 15% tip is thusly $15. Usually you'll tip out your busser ~15-20% ($2 = $13) of your tips, the hostess ~1% (0.15 = $12.85), the bartender ~10-20% ($1.5 = $11.35), kitchen staff 10% (-$1.5 = $9.85).

So really, if you tip 15% or less than the server is pretty literally PAYING to serve you, not the other way around (and this doesn't even take into account the taxes that they still owe on their base hourly wages!).

Omg, I worked for a Darden restaurant too, and they screwed me over with taxes. Same thing with tip share (It was also frustrating to see the bartenders and bussers stop working as hard because they knew they would get their percentage regardless of their work).  I was pissed when they started making us pay taxes based off of gross sales.  Some days I was claiming $180 when I'd only made $120.  It sucked.
