So I came across this about a year ago, but just found it again and I think this is the best reasoning I have ever seen for why you wear a ring on your "ring" finger.

I've always heard this explanation, and I love it.

In ancient times, they believed that a vein ran straight from that finger to the heart, so it became traditional to wear the ring on that finger. The heart is just to the left of your body, so the fourth finger on your left hand is considered the closest to your heart.

That was the one I had always heard until I saw that finger demonstration. I heard two other reasons, but they were for practical reasons:

1. the 4th finger is the least likely to get injured

2. Priests would hold the first 3 fingers so it just made sense to place the ring on a finger not being held

Anyone else know of any others?

The one @BriSox mentioned is the reasoning I've always heard and I like it the most. The one in the video for some reason annoys me. I don't have a good explanation as to why it does except that I think being able to separate and choosing to stay together is more meaningful than something that says your stuck together and cannot separate.

Also I might have tried the video thing and now a new spot in my left hand hurts. I was determined to get those fingers apart.

Hahaha I did the same thing the first time I saw this.

@bethsmiles I usually take things the same way, and do not like the idea of being bound to something.  For some reason this didn't give me that reaction; I think because I focused more on the explanation that you leave your family to start your own family and your children will do the same.  But without focusing on that part I do agree, you should not be with someone because you're stuck, but because you choose to be with that person.
