Ring Vent

So my ring is relatively new. Less than 4 months old. We had to take it in once already because it was missing a stone, and now it's missing ANOTHER one and I'm really mad about it. If we're paying this much for a ring it should be able to keep it together for more than 3 months. Like lordy I'm mad.

  • I'd be mad and disappointed too! I know I worry all of the time about losing a stone in my rings!!! Has the jeweler said why this may be happening? I'm sure if you blame the ring manufacturer, they'll push it back on you first saying you're too hard on them. But, after another stone fell out, it seems more likely that they aren't set as securely as they should be.

  • My mom lost one stone from each ring a few times until they FINALLY got it right. It's annoying, but it happens :/

  • Is it platinum? I heard pave setting in platinum bends too easily and diamonds fall out despite great care.

I'm so sorry you have to send it back in - my ring has been gone for three weeks getting a diamond replaced, and I'm going crazy! Yesterday I called the jeweler for updates on mine.

  • A former coworker of mine had the same problem. I think they were going to go buy a new one from a new place because it just wasn't worth it anymore.
  • Ahh I'm annoyed for you! That sucks so much!!!

I've heard the same about platinum. I always thought it was a hard metal until I researched and found out it actually quite soft and prone to bending/warping and losing stones from the setting.

  • It's white gold. He hasn't said why it's happening but I'm so careful! I don't wear it in the shower or anything.

    So weird! A lemon?

  • Some rings have settings where the smaller stones are glued in.  Could yours be one like this?

Arrrg I hear ya girl, my e-ring did the same thing about 8 months after I started wearing it. That's the problems when they have a lot of little stones together. Two little diamonds from the halo fell out! Mofos were trying to charge me for it like it was my fault! I was like hell no, I'm taking my business elsewhere. They got the message and it's been very stable for a over a year now.

  • It may be that the prongs just are not substantial enough. I've seen it relatively often at work when people bring in rings they've bought elsewhere. And once actually with a ring we sold. In the latter case my boss took full responsibility for the quality of the mounting and actually designed a lookalike replacement that we made and set so the diamonds would be much more secure.

Another question, though. Was your ring sized significantly (as in, 2 sizes or more)? When that's done, the jeweler should tighten all the stones individually after sizing because that much bending can compromise the way they're set.

  • It dies have many small stones but was not sized.
  • I have the same problem with a bracelet that I got for my high school graduation years ago form my parents. I actually am afraid to wear it at all because I've had two occasions where the stones have fallen out. After extensive trips to several jewelers I found out that the setting wasn't substantial enough. Evidently in order to properly hold a stone in the prongs HAVE to come overlap a certain amount on the stone depending on size. The only solution ( and I have yet to find a jeweler that will do it since the bracelet has something like 24 stones in it and it's not a bracelet THEY sold me) is to completely melt it down and rebuild the setting.

Fortunately for you, since an engagement ring is smaller than a bracelet, it will probably be less of a project. But to me, while the bracelet is sentimental, it's not an engagement ring and it won't be a huge deal not wearing it until I can find someone and the money to fix the problem. You WILL miss wearing the engagement ring, however, and it's not ok to not be able to wear that. I would bring it to another jeweler. If the one you're taking it to can't find a problem when there obviously IS one, then they might not be that experienced. I guarantee it's something with the setting shape and size. Bring it somewhere that advertises specializing in repairs. You will need to pay for the labor of having the setting redone and possibly extra metal, but it's worth it in the end.

  • I took the ring back in on the weekend and had them send it back to the manufacturer. I told them to tell the manufacturer that if another stone falls out I will be requesting a new ring.
