No strong opinions on dress. Anyone else this way? UPDATED with Pictures in new post

Just wondering if anyone else is this way. I rarely have strong opinions on clothes anyway, just want to look nice and be comfortable. I seem to be stuck looking for a wedding dress. I have 3-4 now that I'm kind of left with but nothing wows me. The problem is I don't think anything will wow me. Not to mention I'm very practical with money and I have a hard time wanting to spend a lot on a dress for one day. Or between the ones I've liked it is anywhere from $120-500 so I have a hard time not choosing the cheapest just bc I don't like one more than the other. Has anyone else gone through this? What helped you decide? Thanks!

  • I felt the same way so I ended up going to a dressmaker to have one custom made.  I wanted a dress that looked a certain way though.
  • That magical wedding dress moment isn't for everyone, especially if you don't normally care very much about clothing. There's no shame in just choosing a nice dress and moving on to the next decision! Despite all the fanfare around it, it IS just a dress that you'll wear for one day, so don't put so much pressure on yourself to be "wowed." I'm sure you'll look gorgeous in whatever you choose!

  • I'm exactly the same. I bought mine by browsing the David's Bridal clearance online, showing my fiancé the few that were $99 and left in my size, and then just getting the one he liked out of those. Cost me less than $200 even after shipping/exchange rates/duty, and it's fine. Fits, looks like a wedding dress, will therefore please our families, and cost me less than a nice restaurant dinner. Done. I'm not in love with it or anything, but I generally don't care much about my clothes and also hate how I look in stuff virtually all the time regardless. A $3000 wedding dress would have been utterly wasted on me.

  • @amelisha I wish they would have the $99 sale again this fall because I got engaged right before the sale back in June and we went on vacation at that same time so no chance to look.  If they had it again I'm sure I could find one for super cheap that would work well.

I think it might be semi-annual, so I bet if you have time and can hold off for a bit, it'll happen again. I'd keep checking, though (and particularly if you wear a smaller size), because by the time I noticed and actually went to buy one, the sizes were pretty depleted. There were only a few in a 0 or 2 and tons of them only had 12, 14, 16 left, it seemed. Obviously YMMV but that's how it felt when I was looking!

  • I feel the same way! There's so much pressure about the dress, I feel like thats the main thing people ask me when they see me now that we've been engaged a while and the wedding is 10 months away, but to be honest, I haven't even started looking. I just have no clue what I want, and I'm really doubtful that I'll just all of a sudden "know" that I've found THE dress.

  • @kvruns - I just got an email that David's is running a $99 sale starting tomorrow (October 22).

  • thanks @april182015bride I just saw that too!  hoping that one of the 2 I've earmarked from there are included (or at least discounted)
  • I bought my dress on clearance at Marshall's for $10. It's glorious and I love it, but it's still just a white dress at the end of the day. Pick the one that makes you feel the best and move on to things that DO excite you.

(God, I can't wait for caaaaaaake.)
  • My mom is making my dress, which is awesome because she's awesome and because it's much cheaper, but would be hella stressful if I was trying to make the dress conform to some exact specifications of "perfection" in a dress.

If I were you, I'd just do a small amount of research on what dresses look best on your body shape and just roll with a cheap one of those that you like.

I chose an inexpensive dress from simplybridal.com.  I never tried any on. There were no bridal gowns in my town, and I couldn't afford the time or money to go to a place with boutiques. I never had a tears and wow moment with mine.  It's pretty, it's cheap, it looks nice on me (after I bought it) and that's what I wore.

I think TV shows hype up the tears and wow moment more than is realistic. There are plenty of brides on here who never had that.

And cheap is a perfectly acceptable reason in my book for buying one thing over another.  ;)

That is the ultimate bargain deal. I kind of want pictures.

  • I *am* a person who loves clothes and I honestly am not super pumped for dress shopping either. I don't want to spend much money on my dress because there are many other parts of the wedding I'm far more excited about. So don't worry about it, as long as you like the dress, you don't have to be head over heels (as long as you are head over heels about the fiancé!)
  • Hopefully this works, I grabbed pictures of 2 dresses I am thinking of, then 1 other I already bought (from Macys so I can easily return) but I don't have a picture of me in it.  Theres one other dress that my BFF liked the best but they don't let you take pix and I don't know what brand it was to even try to find it.

The wedding is outdoors in a garden area which is why I have the Macy's one as an option even though it is pretty casual.  Thoughts/opinions?

First one is an A line, second is a Trumpet style though I think they look similar

  • Personally, I like the one in the first photo of you -- the one with no flowers. I think it's pretty and very flattering.

As to the Macy's link, it's a bit confusing because I think two different gowns are being pictured. One has kind of a drop waist thing going on/is fitted through the hips, and the other does not. I can't tell what you would be getting. I think the more fitted version would again be more flattering. Are the dresses in the pictures in your budget?
    image
  • yea sorry the Macy's link is stupid and does have 2 dresses pictured - it's the one that just has rouching around the bust line and nothing beyond that but the regular fabric.

The dresses are in my budget and are about the same price and would need similar alterations I think

  • I also like the first pictured dress on you best (though of course it's hard to know for sure without seeing the Macy's dress on you). It looks really flattering on your figure. The dress is simple and elegant and I think it would look lovely in an outdoor garden wedding.
  • Another vote for the first picture.  It fits you fabulously.

  • Out of those two, I prefer the first/left one.  I really like the Macy's one.
    image
  • I like the dress with the flowers.  It is flattering on you and the flowers just give it that special little touch.

My next choice would be the first picture (a-line).  Again, flattering but a tad bit on the plain side.

I really don't like the Macy's dress.  That reminds me more of a BM dress then a wedding dress.

  • I don't really like what those horizontal lines are doing to your midsection in the second one, although I do like the flowers on it. It's giving you a pooch. Bringing in the hips or just pressing it might fix that though...

The Macy's one looks identical to a bridesmaid dress I wore earlier this year, but there's nothing wrong with that. I think the fabric of that one is a bit better suited to a garden wedding than the other two.

  • I think the one on the left is super flattering, but I'd add some really excellent jewelry, to give it an extra oomph. It's pretty, but it wants something.
  • I think I prefer the first one or the Macy's one just because I think the fabric is nicer. I don't do shiny and I think the material of the second one looks sort of cheap because of the sheen? It doesn't hang as well either because it looks stiffer.

They're all nice, simple dresses, though, and similar enough that I really doubt you'll have regrets choosing any of them over another, especially if you're not violently attracted to one in particular.

  • I like the A-line, but I would have to add a super blingy belt!

  • I like them both on you! Also since they are both a little plain you can have fun with shoes, belts, ect.  I would have a colorful shoe, a belt, and a headpiece. I think the belt should sparkle, maybe a headpiece that's inspired by flowers, and a bright shoe?

Yep! Our colors are yellow + navy w/ green accents, so the shoes are bright, sunshine-y yellow. I'm in love with them. :D
  • I often come across such feelings and I will ask for opinions from my boy friend, but after buying it I will pick up some shortcomings of the dress.er,he will not make a desicion for me sooner or later I think.
