Thank You Notes--House Warming/Open House Edition

DH and I had our open house (house warming) party this weekend.

We had several people give us gifts and we will be writing thank you notes.

We had a few people give us a bottle of wine, a candle and what I would consider "hostess gifts".  Should I write thank you notes for those gifts too?

Re: Thank You Notes--House Warming/Open House Edition

  • I would write a thank you note for all gifts received.  Just because it may be labeled as a "hostess gift" it is still a gift and deserves a thank you note.

  • I would think that because it was a housewarming party, you should write thank you notes for those gifts too. Your guests probably intended them in a housewarming spirit.
  • Yes, I would write a thank you note for those gifts too.
  • If it were a standard dinner party, it wouldn't be necessary.  But since house warming generally implies a gift of some sort, even if just a bottle of wine or candle for the home, then I think you need to treat it as a house warming gift and not a hostess gift and send a card.

Plus, thanking people for doing nice things for you is never really a bad thing, even if you aren't required to do it by etiquette.

    This.

If it was a regular dinner party, I would think a verbal "thank you" at the time would suffice, but a card is always a wonderful gesture.

I would send a thank you.  In addition to thanking them for the gift, mention how nice it was to see them, catch up, etc.
