Post Wedding Gain

Has anyone else gained weight since their wedding?   Both DH and I have gained weight since our wedding - me about 12 lbs, DH...not going to guess.   It was a crazy few months after and I don't have a gym membership - so that's my non-excuse, excuse.  I'm signing up for a membership this weekend and DH has already started to get back on the healthy food & weight loss wagon.    But I was wondering how common this was.  It's like we both just said F-this after the wedding cause we had worked so hard before it.    Anyone else do this?  Did you get back on track?

Re: Post Wedding Gain

  • I'm not married yet but I totally just gained 10 pounds since being engaged. FI is a fit as ever. Nothing will make that boy fat.

I exercise to relieve stress, but I got sick and wasn't able to exercise, but continued to eat the way I always did. Hence weight gain.

IMO you probably got burnt out on diet+exercise and let it go.

  • Yes.  I have put on about 25 pounds in the past 3 years.  I was working out like crazy before the wedding.  After about 2.5 weeks off from working out my momentum just disappeared.  Getting back to the gym was like pulling teeth.  I just stopped caring.  I also went through a little post-wedding depression because all the excitement of everything was over with and I had a moment of "now what am I going to do" since I had just spent the last year of my life planning a wedding.  So that didn't help much with my weight gain.

I have been wanting to get back on track but it is so.damn.difficult.

  • I'm sure I have. I ate all the food in Italy, and I haven't been to the gym since the week of the wedding. But I'm getting my ass there today.
  • My weight has always fluctuated but I noticed that whenever I have been "happy" I gain weightwhich then makes me unhappy. It's a cruel cycle. Like Larry, I have gained weight since being engaged. FI has been about the same size. Fi says he likes the way I look but knows how self conscious I feel right now so he has promised to workout with me after work.

I would say that it's very normal but I think it is good you have decided that you wanted to change that while it's a smaller amount of weight rather than when it is a little harder.

  • Like @climbingbrideNY, I ate all the food in Italy too!

Shortly after getting back from the honeymoon I got really sick with a bad cold. I'm a runner and I lift weights a few times per week, and it's really hard to get back into the swing of things even just with about 3 weeks off. Amazing what a cold does to you. It's been 5 weeks since the wedding and I'm three pounds up.  Oh and getting my period bloat didn't help.

DH literally gained 3 pounds (of pizza?) on our honeymoon. He works with a personal trainer so he had the exact metrics.

  • I put about 5 lbs on the month before the wedding and since then put another 10 lbs on. I'm sorta waffling between working on it and being like fuck it. I don't want to lose weight for the sake of losing weight, but I do want to be relatively healthy before we start TTC.

I know for me it was a lot of stopping watching what I was eating. OMG I love food. Bad food.

  • I've gained about 7 lbs this past month from not being careful with my diet like I was before the wedding and I haven't been in the gym in a month now. Ugh, need to find my motivation right now. We're going on our delayed HM in February and I want to lose the 7 lbs I gained plus another 10 or so.

DH and I stayed very fit after out wedding for about 10 months, then it all came crashing down. We were traveling a lot and my SD moved in with us, so we had to cater to her diet needs/food wants. By the time our anniversary rolled around, I had put on 5-7 lbs, but we got back on track. While we wish we hadn't gotten so lazy, but we really needed the break. I then got into the best shape I had ever been in until I got sick this past May. Now I have to start all over. I'm not sure how much weight I have to lose this time as my weight is artificially inflated due to the medication I'm on.

I think everyone goes through this time. You're focused and then the wedding happens and you're tired. Your body hits a wall and just wants rest and recoop. The honeymoon helps push it along in that direction.

  • Yuuuup. I haven't stepped on a scale since the wedding, but I also haven't been to the gym. I was so burned out getting all the little things finished, that I needed some time to just unwind and do nothing. I need to get back at it though, because I'd like to be in better shape before we start trying to knock me up.

  • I put on weight when H and I first started dating - about 10 pounds. I'm still "thin" but I'm not happy with my body, the weight that I am, or how out of shape I am. H has definitely put on some pounds since the wedding. He just signed up for his fourth marathon today so he will be motivated to get back in shape. I'm toying with the idea of signing up for the half marathon in the same location so we can motivate each other. I've done one but this one will be more difficult (a lot more hills!)

@lolo883 I laughed because this is my motivation too.   Outside of the not wanting to have the extra weight on - I want to be healthier for when we move towards TTC.   I have PCOS and I've always heard that being healthier/not being overweight will help with that in the conceiving department.

Also a HUGE motivation for me right now...I'm currently in the 'un-botton' stage of my clothes.   They are snug and fit semi-comfortably, only if the botton on the jeans/pants is unbuttoned. :(  I definitely need to lose those pounds.  Why is it, that the pounds always need to come off as soon as the holidays are starting?
  • Ohhhhh yeah. DH and I both. I've put on about 10 lbs since we got back from the honeymoon. It is so depressing. I just didn't have any motivation after the wedding to hit the gym, and we've just gotten stuck in newlywed bliss of laying around all the time and eating take out and drinking wine. I've stopped weighing myself because I just don't want to know. Ugh.

  • Yup!  I gained 12 pounds since last fall when our engagement pictures were taken.  I'm working on getting those off (plus more) before we TTC.

Why is it that I always want to try and lose weight right as the holidays are starting?  I must like setting myself up to fail.

Oh and I have had many days at work where the button has been undone just so that I was comfortable.  Hence why I tend to wear loose and long fitting tops to work LOL!

    So much this.

I think as soon as it starts to get just a LITTLE cooler, I treat myself to all the hearty comfort foods... and all the Halloween candy... and it's easier to hide now that I can throw on a big sweater! But then I think "oh shit, holidays are coming, I need to get pre-skinny so I can eat more..." nope, fail.

  • Me two or do all of the previous comments make me twelve...I gained about 10lbs after the wedding.  I've always fluctuated a bit but I'd made a concerted effort to lose 20 lbs for the wedding.  I was eating right and working out then I fell and hurt my knee and the treadmill was not an option for a few days then the wedding then the summer time hit and the room where our exercise equipment is located is not heated or cooled so it is insanely hot by the time my knee and wedding schedule were no longer factors.

I need to get back on the treadmill and now that the seasons have turned its a lot more feasible to workout I just have to locate my motivation.

  • Nope. DH has lost weight since he's in-season for officiating and I don't really lose or gain weight much at all. I credit amazing genes for my steady weight (+/-5 lbs for all but a year of my adult life).

  • I'm currently trying to lose my post wedding weight. Between the pre wedding festivities, wedding, honeymoon (eating all the yummy junk food at Disney), coming back and going straight in to tech for a show (which always lead to crappy food choices), a weekend trip to Atlanta, and my birthday (CAKE, all the cake), I put on about 15 lbs. I've shed about 12 of those so far doing Atkins. Hopefully I can introduce some carbs prior to Thanksgiving and make it to through the holidays alright.

I get that a lot, actually. I had a pretty bad eating disorder in high school, but was back to a healthy weight by the time I went to college. Freshman year nearly killed me because all the dorm food made me ill. My weight went up and down every week based on whether or not I managed to get home to real food or not. 5 lbs doesn't seem like much, it was more than 5% of my total body weight so very noticeable. Things got back on track when I was allowed to bring my car on campus - I went to the grocery store and got REAL food for myself. I dropped about 15 lbs junior year when my dad died, but was able to get my weight back up in about 6 months. My weight has been within 3 lbs ever since (13 years).

I'm approaching 35, so I know I will eventually have to consider the possibility of working out to maintain my figure... but eh, DH loves me no matter how much I weigh. I eat a healthy, balanced diet. And I didn't diet at all before the wedding, so I didn't have any metabolism crashing afterwards.

@cookiepusher  I hated dorm food so lost a good 15 lbs my freshman year too.   I wasn't allergic to it, but was just a picky eater so didn't like eating it.    Did/do you have food allergies that caused it or just the overall food quality was less than enjoyable?
  • It's been 5 months since our wedding.  I've gained weight, and am nearing my heaviest right now, DH has stayed fit and the same weight.

We've been working out together, I'm 29 days into a fitness/nutritional program and have lost 6 inches all over, but have maintained the same weight.  I'm trusting that in the next 8 weeks of this program the weight will start to come off as well, but I'm happy with what I've been doing to this point.

  • Yep... I've gained about 15 lbs. in the 4 months since my wedding... that's about 1 lb. a week. And I am starting to feel horrible about it.  Last week I finally had to go buy new jeans (up 2 sizes), which was a big eye opener.  I think some of the weight gain is also due to new birth control that I started around the time of the wedding.  I have a Total Gym at home that I'm trying to use, but I'm having trouble getting motivated to do heavy work outs lately. I've been getting on most days after work (I get home about an hour before DH, so that's good workout time), but doing pretty easy, low impact workouts instead of the tougher, sweat inducing workouts that I really need to do. Although, I have a doctor appointment next week regarding back pain, so I think I may have my doctor send me to physical therapy to help give me the workout jump start I need. But, yeah, you aren't the only one.

It was all over-processed and had way too much sodium. We didn't eat much fast food when I was growing up (only occasionally on road trips). Heck, I didn't even eat pizza until I was like 8! My grandparents owned a takeout restaurant when I was a kid, so Americanized Chinese food was as close to "junk" as I'd really eaten (we didn't use MSG, though). And we didn't use much salt in our food either. My stomach just couldn't handle all the chemicals since I wasn't used to them. The only thing I could eat was salad with oil and vinegar. They didn't even have low-sodium cold cuts so even sandwiches were out! It was a sad, sad time for CP's tummy.

  • I lost weight right before the wedding (not even trying) and stayed about there for several months. I have put on more in the past year or so though.  :(  I think it's because when I was living alone, I would just make broccoli for dinner, or just eat a fish roll up.  H wants real meat and potatoes dinners or big meals, and so I tend to eat those too, which isn't as healthy and I eat too much.  H can't gain weight no matter what.

I'm going to start working out again, try to lose a few pounds, especially before a wedding I'm in in April.

I'm required to wear a suit to work every day, so I too am in this "unbuttoned" club.  FI and I were so much more active and healthy eaters prior to being engaged.  Now that we are engaged, there's just no time.  and I don't really know why... we both have moved back to our hometown which is a typical small town, so we are trying to stay busy being involved with volunteer work and such here, so I think that may be part of our "time management" problem.  We are actually going for a run tonight after work, and I am trying to get back on with my fitness pal app, but right now the days are just a whirlwind for us for some reason.   We are both unhappy with the weight we have gained so we are just diving right back in full speed.. Wedding is in April, so hopefully that will give us enough time to work some of this stuff off!

My twin :) I don't lose or gain weight very easily. I do think my genes are good for that (even though most women in my family tend to put it on very fast) but I also eat quite healthy and exercise regularly. FI is the same too, we make it a top priority to stay fit. I doubt we'll gain any weight after the wedding.

  • I've lost a little weight since the wedding. I gained about 15 pounds with my last birth control pill that would not go away. I changed pills a few months ago and that weight is starting to come off now.

    Anniversary
  • I definitely gained weight since living with FI and being engaged. It's weird. Right now I am at *almost* my heaviest (last September I was at my absolute heaviest. I almost had a heart attack when I saw the numbers on the scale), but I was not nor am I at my biggest. I think that's because at my biggest, I ended up losing a lot of weight in a healthy way, and I gained a lot of muscle along the way. So although I weigh more now than I did then, I am not as "big" as I was a few years ago.

With that being said, I am still at one of my biggest and heaviest points, and it is really frustrating. I am attempting to eat healthy and I am continuing my workout routine, so I am hoping that the weight will start coming off. I still cannot fit into a few of my jeans, and I want to lose at least 5 pounds before my dress comes in at the end of next month.

We actually received our engagement pics yesterday, and I hate them, I cannot believe how much weight I have put on.
