WTF is Going on in Canada?

Shootings in Ottawa: http://www.theguardian.com/world/live/2014/oct/22/canadian-parliament-lockdown-shooting
And just yesterday there was a bomb threat in a little hamlet near my town, which turned out to be false, but holy moly.

Re: WTF is Going on in Canada?

  • Yeah, the number of crazies going after RCMP/military/government seems to have increased recently. I think a lot of it is that these guys hear about other stuff going down and get the idea to try something themselves, you know? It's like in the 90s with the school shootings in the states.

I'm glad they seemed to get it under control relatively quickly, but it's very sad.

  • Don't forget the two military personnel that were run down a couple days ago.  I have no idea what is going on but I don't like it at all and really just want everything to go back to normal.

  • Lest we forget the dead babies in the storage locker in Winnipeg. :(

  • It's election day in Manitoba. They just tightened the security at the Legislative building and have a bunch of officers posted at the Public Safety Building.   We're falling apart.
  • My FSIL works uncomfortably close to the shootings. She's okay, there's been a number of non-mandatory lockdowns but I cannot stop crying. This is really upsetting. @lolo883 they've made an arrest in Winnipeg. So there's that at least.

  • It's fucking nuts. I've been streaming CBC news on my computer on and off, the whole situation is just awful and upsetting.

They've confirmed the soldier who was shot on Parliament Hill has died.

  • The Moncton shooting was this past June too, was it not?  On top of the soldier that was killed 2 days ago in the Ottawa area.

Some of my coworkers in Ottawa are on lockdown.  I'm scared for them and sad for the situation.

  • This is so upsetting. I grew up in Ottawa and remember going to Parliament so many times as a kid. It's just not a place you would ever think something like this would happen, despite how important the area is and everything. I keep refreshing the news at work; apparently the RCMP will be making a statement soon. Looks like the university downtown is on lockdown/classes cancelled and tonight's hockey game as well. Just crazy.

  • Wow. This explains the "why is Canada acting like Murica" statuses on Facebook

  • I work in Ottawa. Fucking scary shit. The parliament building and much of the area is still on lockdown. My brother works about 2 blocks away and he was driving downtown with his coworker and had been at the exact place the honour guard was killed about two minutes prior to the shooting. He drove past the car, said he could have reached out and touched it.

There's still some question as to whether they're looking for a second shooter. It's still pretty tense around here. I overheard a waitress telling her coworker that they locked down the university residence buildings in the area and the school called the res building to tell them to lock the doors but the res thought they were calling about fixing the doors so they didn't do anything. No big deal, the entire downtown core is on lockdown , let's just leave the front doors wide open with access to a hundred university students.

    Scary, scary shit.

I have a good friend who works in a government building two blocks from the Hill (they're okay, obviously). They were told to stay away from the windows. Definitely scary.

  • I have several friends in Ottawa that were on lock down today.

In Vancouver there was a big increase in transit police too. I felt that was a bit unnecessary. It was very disturbing to read about the shooting all morning, just not something that you expect to read with your coffee in the morning.

A good friend of mine lives really close to the Parliament buildings and works shift work so I was worried she was close by, but luckily she was at work and was away from the craziness.

@kaitlynmichelle - Completely forgot about the time difference! It was mid-morning out here, but for you it must've been more of a "good morning, here's some crazy shit news from Ottawa". Ugh.

  • Wow, tons more police presence in Toronto today. Not surprised, still crazy though.

  • FI and I are heading to Ottawa this weekend to hug everyone we can find. i was reading the news yesterday morning and saw they raised the 'terror threat level' from low to medium. Didn't connect til a few moments ago. I truly hope this doesnt affect how safe we feel and how we conduct ourselves in this county. And that we stomp out the inevitable racism that rears its head.

  • I found out this morning that my cousin works in an office building 4 blocks away, and her son works in a building a block away, that he heard the gun shots.  Very freaky, but at least they were okay!

Some of the stuff that people were posting on Facebook and Twitter was just ridiculous and so uncalled for. I unfollowed a few people yesterday, I don't need to see hateful stuff like that.
