NWR: Newlywed ordering personal checks....

A Newly-wed  co-worker is ordering Personal checks for her and the hubby. The debate has come up, as to how the names should be listed. (we are clearly very busy at work! haha!)

So, would it be:

Jane Smith

John Smith

155 Main Street

Nowhere, OK 12345

Or

Jane or John Smith

155 Main Street

Nowhere, OK 12345

Or is it just a personal preference and it really doesn't matter?

Re: NWR: Newlywed ordering personal checks....

  • We did the first option (each name on a separate line). I think it's just personal preference.
  • We also did the first option. :)
  • We did the second. Just make sure not to use "and." Otherwise, I think it's personal preference.
  • I don't understand how this matters in any reality ever.

  • My husband and I have different last names, so we did the first option.

My parents do option 2 but their names are so long it runs onto 2 lines anyway.

    Personal preference.

  • I didn't know you could even get them on the same line.  Ours are the first option.

I do a lot of check ordering for members where I work and the 1st option is the most commonly used.
Be sure not to use the word 'AND' tho.
By using the word 'and' you're signifying that both you AND your spouse (or whomever you're on the account with) have to sign the check.
By using 'or' only one of you have to sign it.
Having the names on separate lines makes it automatically 'or'.
And you should put the Primary owner on the account first if you go with option #1.

ETA:  Personally I think the 1st option looks nicer to the eye

  • Oh I never thought about that! Something to definitely consider as soon as we get married since I'm taking FI's name!

  • FI and I did Option #1 with his name first since he was the primary account holder.

  • We did option 1 when we opened our first checking account before we were engaged. I haven't ordered new ones with my new last name, my bank told me not to bother.
