Thank you notes

After our wedding, my husband took all of the cards and pulled out the cash and gift cards before I could even see them. (and write down who gave what) I was PISSED. Now I need to write thank you notes but I don't have a clue what some of the gifts were. He only remembers that one card didn't have anything in it, but I am pretty sure that one was from my grandparents because they gave me cash before the wedding.

Any suggestions on how to write my thank you notes when I am not sure what the gift was? Most of the gift cards were for Target and we used them to purchase luggage before our honeymoon.

Dear loved one, thank you so much for helping us to celebrate our big day, and for your generous gift. It helped us so much in planning and taking our honeymoon and we're so grateful for being able to take such a lovely trip! We hope you had a wonderful time at the wedding and hope to see you again soon.

You don't need to mention whether it was cash or a gift card or specifically what you bought. HOPEFULLY you're right and the empty card was from your grandparents, and you don't thank someone for something they didn't give and come off as gift grabby. Hopefully if you do, they'll just think the cards got mixed up and not be offended.

Sounds good! A lot of the examples I have seen mention what it was used for and I don't really want to be that specific! Most of our guests know we used the cash for our honeymoon.

I think it's nice to mention what you used it for, but you can't really tell every single person that you bought luggage, KWIM? You could mention that you bought all your honeymoon necessities or something so that the people who gave you GCs don't think you took your actual honeymoon at Target, but then if anyone compares notes they won't think you bought 82 suitcases with all that cash.

I wrote most of my thank yous like this:

Dear So-and-So, 

Thank you so much for your generous gift! We're so happy you were there to celebrate such a special day with us. 

And then I added in some personal touches. I didn't go into specifics on what we'd use their gift on.

I would just thank everyone for their generous gift and tell them how lovely it was having them there with you to celebrate, etc.

On a side note, thank you for this post. This is so something my FI would do without even thinking, and now I'm going to remind him that he is not allowed to touch the cards hah.

@peachy13 haha you're welcome! He said he didn't want to leave a bunch of cash in the hotel room and I didn't even realize what he was doing until he was halfway through the cards. I guess that's man-logic lol He's clueless but I love him!

DH and I opened our cards in the hotel room while we (I) had the champagne and cheese they left for us... we were writing on the backs of the cards what each card had contained/been attached to. One of them he wrote "gift and cash." What the hell, dude?! Which gift?! Argh. Thankfully process of elimination helped figure it out.

Men...lol I think I have most of it figured it out! There are 5 or 6 that I'm not sure if it was a gift card or cash but I will add some personal messages in there to distract from the generic thank you response

We didn't open our gifts until the day after our wedding. We didn't even get through all the cards that night because we were too tired, and opened the rest on Monday. I can't believe some of you opened all your cards the night of your wedding!

Lol we got to the room, had sex, and were still wide awake. So we opened gifts then went to bed. :-p

Haha we didn't open gifts until the next day, but my husband pulled everything out of the cards while I'm changing out of my wedding dress. Our reception ended at 11pm and then we went bar hopping with our friends! I don't know how I made it out I was exhausted!

I think it's ok to be specific but vague at the same time. You could say, "we were able to have a wonderful honeymoon thanks to your generous gift" or something like that, so yeah you used the money or gift card or whatever for honeymoon stuff, but they don't need to know "we used your cash to buy an expensive bottle of wine and got drunk" ya know? 

This thread just made me think of writing my thank-yous for my high school graduation 10 years ago. I was kind of an idiot back then, and my thank-yous were like "Thank you so much for the check for $50" lol I thought I needed to put the exact amount and everything. Oh, past me.
