I hit a deer...

edited October 2014 in Chit Chat
UGH! Driving into work this morning I NAILED a deer on the interstate. F*cker was standing in the middle of the road and because Atlanta doesn't care to pay to light half their roadways, I couldn't see him until my headlights caught him.

I was going 70 (the speed limit) and slammed on the brakes, but still probably hit him going about 60. I'm just glad the airbags didn't go off and I didn't knock him up into my windshield. There also weren't a lot of other cars on the road since it was super early, so I'm glad nobody else was involved. I'm sore all over and I'm pretty sure my car is screwed, but I guess it could be worse.

**Sorry for the rant! I've been trying to stay calm with my FI since he's not in town and is thus freaking out that he can't help. Just needed to vent.

ETA: Not sure why the picture's sideways, but you get the idea.

  • :( Awww. That's terrible.

I hope you are feeling sore because you tensed up, and not because you slammed into anything. Otherwise, you might want to get checked out, just in case. I hope the damage won't be as expensive as you think.

  • That seriously sucks. I'm glad you're okay.
  • So scary! Glad you are okay.

  • Cars can be fixed, or you'll get a new one. That is why you have an insurance.

Glad you're ok, because that's the most important thing.

  • @levieenrose I think my body is sore in general from tensing up. My wrist hit the dash so that hurts the most. I took a cab to the urgent care center and they took x-rays. Nothing broken, just a sprain of sorts so I got a brace and super strength ibuprofen.

It's a toss-up on the car. The cop said it was leaking transmission fluid so we'll see what they say. Apparently people don't get in accidents on the weekends though because neither my claims adjustor nor Enterprise was open today. Guess we'll see what tomorrow brings!

  • Glad to hear you already saw someone and got a brace (plus drugs).

It is a bummer about your car; ditto Huskypuppy on that. Sending good thoughts!!!

  • I'm so sorry to hear this! How traumatizing. I'm so glad you are okay though. Cars can be taken care of :)

Hugs to you until your FI gets back to hug you.

  • Ugh, that seriously stinks. Sending you lots of hugs!

What part of Atlanta are you in? I live near Midtown and we have coyotes...but I have yet to see a deer.

I'm so glad you are okay!!! Hitting a deer at that speed can be really really bad.

    Fucking deer, man. Hate 'em.

  • SO glad you're okay. You did the right thing. Our natural reaction is to swerve to avoid the deer. It's kind of a toss up, I think, going the speed you were going since like you said the deer could have come through your windshield and that would have been ugly. But they say not to swerve. One of my good friends swerved to avoid a deer and flipped his car and is quadriplegic. *Hugs* I hope you feel better soon.
  • Happy that you are ok! That must of have scary:( feel better soon!!

  • Scary! Thank god you're OK!
  • I'm glad you're okay and no one else is involved.

Did the deer die?  I hit a deer once and I didn't kill it.  It bounded into the woods.  I think I mortally wounded it because I was picking hair out of my headlight after the fact and there was blood.

It's a pretty unnerving experience.  Glad you're fine.

  • @blabla89 We're in Newnan temporarily, so that's where I was coming from. They're always on the side of the road down there. I never saw them in Vinings. We're heading back to that area next month. I can add the damn deer to list of reasons I don't like Newnan!

@lc07 I didn't have time to do anything but slam on the brakes. It was in the middle of the lane and started to run towards the woods when it saw me, but it was too late. Sorry to hear about your friend, I really do consider myself lucky, all things considered.

@goldchocobo Yes, the deer died instantly. The impact threw it into the far right lane (I was in the second lane from the center of 4 lanes). I'm glad for that, I think I would have felt bad if I knew it was out there somewhere hurt...I'd also be cursing the hell out of it though.

Thanks for the wishes and hugs ladies!

  • I'd get checked out just to be on the safe side.  An impact like that can do a number on your neck and back.  Praying that everything is okay.
