Help me shop! (NWR FWP)

edited October 2014 in Chit Chat
So as Murphy's Law would have it, a few days after I bought $100 stuff with our registry completion discount, we got our Macy's registry rewards gift card for like $102. Grrr. (I had heard it could be a few more months before I got the GC, and wanted to take advantage of most of what I wanted being on sale.) But, now I have free money to spend, so yay!

Total FWP is we already got most of what we registered for... is there anything we might have missed that you absolutely can't live without? Or should I be a total ass and keep it for myself, buy an outfit or something? Is that totally obnoxious? (DH couldn't care less and thinks we have more than enough "stuff" as it is. He doesn't appreciate that sometimes food should be served out of a different vessel than what it was cooked in, or that salads should be spun, or that yes I absolutely needed that special thing to bake brie in.) We got all our fine china and stemware, new flatware, all the serve-ware we could ever possibly need, glass storage containers, all new towels, and a coffee pot. I just bought storage cases for the china and a new closet organizer to try to wrangle my clothes. We already had nice Calphalon pans, Kitchenaid mixer, Keurig, panini maker and waffle iron.

ETA - the 20% discount is still good so I presumably have $120ish, if I buy before that expires.

Any other ideas?

  • What about some really nice sheets or a new comforter? You can never have enough of that kind of thing!

  • You seem to already have a pretty equipped kitchen! What about a juicer ?

  • Save it.

It doesn't sound like a lot of fun but wait until the holidays. Or your next big party. Or something like that. You're going to discover that there are still a few things you need/want for the house and it will suck if you have to go out-of-pocket for it when you don't need to.

  • @sarawifenow we got new sheets off the Target registry, and I just bought us a new comforter about a year and a half ago once I found out the one we'd been sleeping under was purchased by his ex (ew, and yes I'm that petty). We got a new blanket for the winter, too.

@loro929 we have the Jack LaLanne Power Juicer and never use it because it's a bitch to clean. We'd registered for a Ninja blender at Target so we could just blend our juice instead and nobody bought it... they have a better price than Macy's, but not if we're getting a $102 discount... hmmm.

  • What about using it for Xmas shopping? Is that weird? I don't know, we're trying to stick to a budget, cover wedding expenses, and buy xmas gifts for our families. If I had "free money" I would use it to buy people gifts! :P

Not petty at all! I made sure that H got rid of all his blankets/pillows that any exes slept on/under. I did the same. Yuck!

  • Oooo how about a feather bed for your mattress? Those things are close to $100 at Macy's. It's like sleeping on a cloud!

  • @wandajune6 honestly, we were pretty well stocked before the wedding and most of what we got (besides china) was upgrades. We host a lot of parties and have had Thanksgiving and Christmas a few times, so we've already hit most of those "oh crap, we don't have a ___" moments.

I suppose I could just be fiscally responsible and save it for the next time we need socks or underwear...

  • Get a really nice chef's knife. Like a really nice one.

The thing I'm most grateful for in the kitchen are goldtouch pans and awesome knives. Macy's doesn't have goldtouch pans, so my vote goes to an awesome knife.

We also registered at Williams Sonoma. :) Got a full set of Wusthof knives and regular pans, but I had a change of heart and exchanged them for Goldtouch and paid the difference.

I'm really coming off like a spoiled brat, aren't I.

My mom wants to do a homemade item Yankee swap for Christmas, and only buy gifts for all the kids...

  • What about a vacuum? Anybody have recommendations among the brands Macy's sells? Or am I gonna have to drop $600 for it to be worth replacing whatever we have now, that's "good enough?" Big dog sheds like crazy...

  • I say sheets and towels, but put them in a box in the back of the closet and don't use them for at least a year.  Then you have new sheets and towels again!
  • Sounds like you have everything. I vote new purse!

  • 1)Maybe some decorative pillows to go with the new sheets/bedding?

    2) Something I LOVE having around the house is fresh flowers, so I was SUPER excited to get a new fancy crystal vase at one of my showers that I leave on the kitchen table even when i have no flowers - it's that pretty.  Didn't anticipate using it as much as i have.

    3) Fancy place mats, chargers, cloth napkins?

All of these things are usually way to "extra" for me, BUT, it was free money with reward cards and and gift cards.  I would try to go with something along those lines that really finish a room but i'm usually too cheap to buy :)

P.S.  I use my Ninja blender almost every morning (I got the the dual one with 2 individual blender cups AND the big pitcher).
  • @cafarrie DH tossed the decorative pillows that came with our comforter into the abyss of his closet, never to be seen again. We got tablecloths and cloth napkins off the Target reg, too. (I love cloth napkins, that's what we used on a daily basis when I was a kid.) And my SIL bought me this adorable Kate Spade owl vase.

Good to know on the Ninja! I would definitely want the one with the blender cups, big pitcher and food processor, because it would be replacing my old Cuisinart blender+food processor whose motor is about to burn out from too many frozen strawberries.

    I LOVE that vase!!

  • Does Macy's sell Vitamix? Because I'd totally put it towards that to make myself feel better about buying a Vitamix. I want one so bad and even though $100 wouldn't even make a dent in the price it would make me feel better, haha.

My other suggestion would be an attachment for the KitchenAid stand mixer. I use my sausage grinder, food processor, and pasta maker ALL THE TIME and they were absolutely worth what I paid for them. Fresh spinach pasta and getting to throw out my food processor both make me so happy. There are tons of options, from those I mentioned to an ice cream maker, and I want to collect them all.

    That vase is AWESOME!
  • About a year ago we got a Roomba, it was a Christmas present from Fis parents. It pretty much changed our lives to always come home to a vacuumed house. I love it. It's more than what your discount is worth but its one of those worth it things that you probably absolutely don't need but if you can get it at a discounted price (or as a gift lol) it's totally worth it.

  • Ooh @amelisha I didn't think of the pasta maker!! I have an ice cream maker already (seriously, my dad is obsessed with giving small kitchen electrics as gifts for every holiday) but pasta... ooh pasta...

@loro929 I've been looking into those lately... I had bought one for my mom years ago and I don't think she was super happy with it. I'm sure they've improved though. I heard the Neato brand ones get better reviews than Roomba...

I love mine. We have the one that does round pastas (either long or short, hollow, solid, and spiral) and also the one that does flat sheets for ravioli/lasagna/etc. I use both of them a lot.

If you can afford to make up the difference, get a Dyson. You'll basically never need another vacuum. I can't even express how excited I was to find out that FI already has one, and I already have a vacuum I love (a Bissell Cleanview Helix, which they no longer carry at Macy's apparently).
  • Dude. Since you live where it's freezing in winter- do you have a heated blanket? DH bought me a queen sized fleece heated blanket last year and I LIVE in the thing. I know it was around $100. I put it on the bed while I'm doing my whole brushing teeth/ getting ready for bed routine and then when I crawl in, it's soooo warm and heavenly. I turn it off when I actually go to sleep because don't wanna burn the house down. But we are cheap, so we keep the heat on really low and it's awesome to bundle in it watching tv and not turn the oil heat up.

  • Strange suggestion, but what about lingerie (if your H is into that sort of thing)? That way it really is for the two of you.

He's not really into it... likes it for 90 seconds and then takes it off. But something special for Christmas could still be nice! Maybe some silk boxers for him too. :-*

  • Wine Decanter (I like having two - I only have one right now, broke one!)

A really nice picnic basket for dates

How about Outdoor products? I've always wanted an outdoor rug for my patio which is huge but never get around to buying one. Or hanging lanterns or lights for outside?
  • Kitchen-aid mixer attachments?

Garment steamer?  (you probably already have one since you like to sew :)

    Shark steam mop?

If you bake, do you have a good rolling pin and pastry mat?

Do you have a crystal collection that you could add a piece to?

    image
  • I'm all about the shark steam mop, if you have any hardwood floors or tile. I couldn't live without it.

  • We have laminate wood floors, so no stream mop allowed. Have a garment steamer since I hate to iron. :) My rolling pin isn't anything special but it gets the job done.

I think if DH's head doesn't explode at the thought of one more kitchen item entering this house, I'll look into Kitchenaid attachment . Otherwise, I may be forced to get some North Face winter boots. :)
