Anyone Ever Had Pneumonia?

FI has been ill lately, so he FINALLY went to the doctor. They told him it looks like bronchitis, with pneumonia and a side of mono. They ran all kinds of tests and x-rays.

I've never had pneumonia before, or bronchitis or mono now that I think about it.  Has anyone else? Is there anything you guys can think of that would make him feel better? Any particular foods that were easier to eat than others?

Thanks everyone!

Re: Anyone Ever Had Pneumonia?

  • I had pneumonia when I was very little, and my sis has had mono twice. Make sure he gets lots of protein to help rebuild his energy (there's a reason chicken soup is a cliche) and REST, even when he's feeling well enough to be back at work. Get plenty of sleep and come back to normal life slowly, to the extent that that's possible. In the words of Samuel L Jackson, tell him to Go the F--- to Sleep!
  • I've had bronchitis many times and have ended up with pneumonia twice. The last time ended in a hospitalization.

For me, sleep made all the difference. Cough syrup with codeine was also a winner. In terms of food, chicken soup with matzo balls cures all ills. I suspect your FI will probably have different tastes though.

  • I pretty much get bronchitis every year, it's not even a question of if but rather when. I've had pneumonia...3 times I think, and mono once. First, don't do shit. Seriously make him just lay around and not do shit. I've wound up in the hospital because I wanted to do shit. Your body needs to rest.

I always like hot steamy showers to loosen up the mucus. This will make him cough scary hard and he'll probably even cough up some gross shit. This is actually good. Disgusting, but good. And it can hurt while he does it, but again good.

Vicks is like...the stuff of the gods. My grandma always make me put it on my feet with a pair of socks. But rubbed on the chest like a normal person is good too.

Dairy based foods make me cough more, so I try to stay away from milk, ice cream, ect. Soup is always good, water, sprite/7up, hot toddies, ginger ale, I love mint tea when I'm sick.

If he got an inhaler from the doctor make sure it's always within easy reach. I usually ask if I can get two so I can keep one by the bed and one on my person.

They used to make these shower tablet things. You'd put one on the floor of a hot shower and it'd relase all this nice...stuff. But I think they took them off the market. However pinterest has about a billion and one do it yourself shower tablet recipes.

DH has pneumonia and resting was the one thing he could not comprehend. The doctor told him he couldn't work for two weeks and his brain couldn't process that. He had setbacks because he'd try to do stuff, even around the house. So, REST UP!!!

  • I've had all three but never at once. Mono you tend to sleep through, it's exhausting. Pneumonia is kind of insidious if you have "walking pneumonia" because you can still do all your stuff (work, school, whatever) you just feel like shit doing it. Until you end up overdoing it and end up in the hospital.

He should follow doctor's orders, take his full course of antibiotics and sleep!
  • I've had all 3. He DEFINITELY needs to rest. Does he have a high fever? I had to go to the ER because my fever went up to 104. I'm not trying to scare you, but emphasize rest to him. Even after he feels better and goes back to work, he should still rest when he gets home. My doc told me to rest for an additional 6 weeks afterwards.

  • I work with dying people so I see it a lot but it's always paired with like 9 other things. I've personally had bronchitis and it sucks. I always got ice cream and Popsicles

  • I have had bronchitis and pneumonia before. Lots of rest helps a ton! My doctor also recommended an oregano oil supplement and eating apples. Both have important components for healthy lung function.

A Vick's vaporizer (or a few drops of tea tree oil in the vaporizer) worked wonders on making the coughing less frequent.
  • Bronchitis veteran here. I have it EVERY YEAR. I had it for the first time in summer of 2009, and every year I get it again. Usually twice.

That first time, it turned into pneumonia. I didn't rest (had no time to, I had a full semester's classload in 5 weeks that summer) and wound up at the beach after my minimester was over, sleeping in the condo the whole week.

REST is the best thing you can possibly make him do for those. Drink plenty of fluids, find a comfy spot, and don't do anything other than use the facilities.

I've never had mono, but if I recall it's the same bit - don't do anything, drink lots of fluids, and sleep as much as you can.

  • I went out after work about bought 6 types of chicken soup and some Gatorade. He's got a fever, but be damned if I can find the thermometer. He's sleeping on the couch with the cat right now. I love him, but he's quarantined lol

There are at least two different kinds of pneumonia - viral and bacterial.  I have had both.Pneumonia means that his lungs are filled with fluid, and he may need oxygen to help breathing until the infection or the virus clears up.
It knocks the stuffings out of you!  Expect six weeks for complete recovery, if not longer.  Good news is that it is usually easily treated with antibiotics.
    I liked ice cream.

  • I had pneumonia as a kid.  I literally laid on the couch with a comforter and a constantly refilled glass of white grape juice (as well as my amazing inhaler from the doctor) watching Blues Clues all day long.  My parents later told me I probably should've been hospitalized.  I recommend fluids and lots of rest.  Hope he feels better soon!
  • Lots and lots of rest. H had mono two years ago and all he did was sleep. For three weeks. Granted, mono makes you really, really sleepy (he'd sit down and be out in about 30 seconds), but regardless, lots of rest makes all the difference.
  • I know PPs have already said it but seriously, the only thing that will make him better is rest and meds. The last time I was really sick was in college when I had mono, bronchitis, and tonsillitis or some random trifecta of shit. I slept for THREE DAYS. Not like, slept a lot and just hung out, literally three straight days of constant sleeping.

I was at home for break and my wonderful mother would come in to wake me up and give me medicine and occasionally chicken noodle or butternut squash soup. I was in a total stupor. I had Sweet Home Alabama playing on the VCR (this was only about 8 years ago...don't judge) and it just kept playing through, rewinding, and playing again since I was too out of it to turn it off. To this day, that's what I watch when I don't feel well.

Do your best to make sure he gets fluids, meds on schedule, light soup occasionally, and so much sleep it's ridiculous. Good luck!
