Need help with wedding colors

Hi everyone.  My fiance and I are getting married next March at the Crown ballroom in Portland.  There is quite a bit of gold in the venue with the chiavari chairs and the gold chargers they use as well.  There are also black cushions on the chairs, and white tulle as ceiling decor. We've been thinking of using purple, but I'm afraid that any bold color like that might be too much.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

So far the ideas are:

purple+gold+black 

mixed metallics-not sure how it would work but I don't want 5 bridesmaids in a bold color-might be too much

gold+ivory+black

Our colors were purple and gold, with white and black for good measure.  It definitely wasn't too much.  It was very regal and elegant looking.  I would go for a deeper purple, like more of an eggplant, and have fun with it!

Thanks for the tip!  What color dresses did you use for the bridesmaids?

They were an aubergine or eggplant color in velvet.  They were long, sweetheart neckline, with tank straps.  The guys all wore black tuxes; H wore a gold/black vest with black tie, the GM wore black vests and black ties.  I wish I had a picture to show you.

I'm seconding the deep purple idea... chose your centerpieces wisely and the rest of the room will fall into place!
