NWR: How do you keep your house clean?

Re: NWR: How do you keep your house clean?

  • I have found the best thing is to just pick up as you go. If you opull something out to use it, put it back up. We do the dishes and wipe the counter down every time we use the kitchen and sweep daily. Then vacuuming, dusting, mopping, and bathrooms are done on the weekend.

I think having a set schedule helps.

To get rid of clutter, donate the things you don't need. If you haven't used something in over a year, it's time to get rid of it.

  • I clean along I guess. I clean a little bit everyday and keep everything in place so that it never really gets dirty.

  • I do dishes and wipe down the kitchen everyday, right after dinner.  On the weekends I try to pick up some of the clutter, and do the sweeping and such.  Sometimes this happens,  sometimes it doesn't because of the amount of homework/ papers I have due for the week.

I have found that as a little bit of a night owl, it easier for me to do a quick sweep of clutter and such before I go to bed, while I'm packing my books for the following day.

I would love to say that FI does an equal amount of chores in the house but our schedules just don't line up that way.  He will unload the dishwasher or start/ fold a load of laundry but he works on the weekends when I want to clean and he also works as a comedian in the evenings/ late nights and he has a full load of classes during the day.  Because of this I just take on the majority of the cleaning, and know that at the end of the day I'm helping him with his goals.

We just moved from a one bedroom apartment to a 3 bedroom house with a full basement.  We're both slobs and he's a packrat.  We're still close enough to moving day that our house is still "decorated" with cardboard boxes.  I am spending money, lots and lots of money, buying everything our new house needs so that we can get to the place where everything has a home.  Once everything has a home and I'm doing less unpacking and de-cluttering, I think I'll be more easily able to actively clean.

I've done the 10-minute clean, but not since we moved.  I made the rule that we have to do whatever will make the biggest impact.  So, quantity over quality.

I've also listed every flat surface in my apartment (haven't done it for the house yet) and required myself to clean 5 of them every day.  Some were as simple as watering my plants, emptying trash cans, or wiping down a counter.  Some required the entire floor to be cleared off for vacuuming.
