AW-Our little family grew over the weekend. PIP

We got a kitty! We have been wanting to get one for a really long time and decided to visit the shelter this weekend. We fell in love with this little girl and took her home. She was raised around hound dogs, so she is used to the loud bark that our beagle has.

Bailey (our beagle) is so curious about the kitty and every time she walks into the room Bailey gets so excited that she (TMI) farts so loud and then beats me with her tail because she is wagging it so hard. Kitty just sneezes at her and walks away.

So far things have been going pretty well with the two of them. We had a couple of loud moments, but I think things will calm down in time. Any tips for dogs and cats living together will be greatly appreciated. Bailey has lived with cats before and spends the day with 2 kitties at my mom's house while H and I are at work.

So, everyone, meet Zillie!

  • She is adorable!

This baby knows exactly how I feel
  • What a cutie!! H wants to get a couple of kittens but I told him that we need to wait until our puppy gets a little older and house broken!
  • Oh, she's beautiful! I'd just make sure she has an "up" area away from Bailey so she has an escape when she wants it. Everyone likes alone time. My girls have a cat tower that they love to lounge in, so you could see if you can find one of those for cheap.
  • @esstee33, I cleared out a couple of shelves that run along our closet (second picture) so I am hoping she goes up there more often. I definitely want to get a kitty tower. So far she just has her scratching post that she lounges on.

That's great! She'll find a happy spot she likes to go to when she wants some peace and quiet. :)
  • Awww…what a sweetie! Congrats on the new addition!

  • Such a cutie!!!!  As for tips with cats and dogs cohabitating:  We've always had cats and dogs together.  They will get used to each other and set their own boundaries.  As long as they are doing good now then they should be fine for the future.  If there were any issues they would come up in the first month or so of them living together.

So glad everyone is happy with the new addition

  • @falsara--So gald to hear this! Hopefully things will continue to go well. Right now we are making sure that they sleep in different rooms and that Bailey (the dog) always has a leash on when she is in the house. I feel like I am constantly looking over my shoulder! When do you start to relax with dogs and cats cohabitating?

Once they've been together for a while and seem to be ok with close contact, such as sniffing and stuff, I'd say you're in the clear.  Luckily because both of your animals are familiar with the opposite species they at least know what they are coming into contact with.  Honestly the fact that the cat is basically ignoring the dog is a good thing, because it means that she's pretty relaxed with her in the vicinity.  Once the next few days go by without anything major happening, you can start relaxing bit by bit.  Hope this helps.

@levioosa--OMG! I just spit my tea onto my computer screen when I read that. I wish I had gotten a pic of her this morning because it would go with that saying so well. She was sitting on her post a put her arm on the side of the post with her elbow bent. It looked JUST like the guy sitting in his chair in the commercials.

  • Awwwwwww so cute!  I got my kitty from a shelter too.  Congrats on your newest addition!

Sounds like Bailey just wants to be a friend!  As long as Zillie has a nice place for quiet time she should be okay.

  • @falsara--Morning! Quick question for you re: cats and dogs. Last night Zillie (kitty) started purring and rubbing up on Bailey. Obviously the cat is fine with her which is great! I did get a little nervous because Bailey has never had cats do this to her before. She just kinda froze so I picked up the cat after a few seconds and moved her. Should I just let it happen? H thinks I am being a worry wart, but I want to make sure that everything is copacedic.

It's great that Zillie is showing interest in Bailey.  I understand your worries, but since Bailey didn't have any aggressive or scared reactions, I would let Zillie continue as long as there is a Human adult to kind of keep tabs on the interaction incase either of their reactions changes.  And you can do this bit by bit.  Say Zillie does it again,  let them have the interaction for a little bit longer than before and then move her.  And every time it happens let the interaction continue for a little longer each time until you know that neither of them is bothered by the interaction or until you feel comfortable enough that you won't have to worry about it.

We had several pairings of cats and dogs where they were extremely friendly and would take naps on top of each other.  Several of them would play tag and stuff after getting super comfortable with each other.  I'm really glad to hear that Zillie is settling in!
