Making my own veil

Hello Ladies!

I am planning on making my own veil. I can't see spending a couple hundred dollars on something I know I can make myself, plus - how special will it be to wear something I made? I am a super crafty person, and am very confident in my abilities, but I wanted to see if anyone else has done the same or is planning on doing so. If you already have, do you have any random tips that you wish you had known before? I am planning on practicing the attachment to the comb several times before doing my actual wedding veil.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Making my own veil

  • What style are you planning on? Color? Plain tulle, or edged with something? I made a lace-edged veil and... it's a long story. I don't want to scare you with details that aren't relevant though. :)

  • Look at Whitedovebridal.com. They are so cheap you can embellish one or use it as a trial.
  • @lolo883 - just a simple crystal bead edging. I've done plenty of beaded embellishment, as well as jewelery and french beaded flowers, so it's not necessarily the embellishment but the gathering at the comb. I've already found a perfect color match tulle, and bought enough tulle to make the veil 3 different times if it comes down to it, plus a piece for the trial runs on the attachment issue.
  • The gathering at the comb is the easiest part, at least I found that part to be the easiest.  The most time consuming part to me was getting the right shape (I curved the bottom of the veil so it wasn't just a rectangular piece of fabric).

For the comb I just gathered the fabric and did a running stitch to hold it together (make sure that the gathered portion is the same width as the comb).  I then attached the veil to the comb with a lot of looping around the comb base and teeth.

  • I also found the comb gathering to be the easiest part. Hardest part was attaching my lace. I'm still doing it! Very rewarding though.

Then you should be fine! Attaching at the comb is super easy.

    1. Do two long running stitches along the length you want to gather (the more you gather, the poofier it will be), about an inch from the edge. Hold the two threads together and pull to gather the fabric evenly until it's the width of the comb.
    2. If there's a "right side" to your veil, you want to lay it with the right side up. Place your comb onto the gathered edge with the points facing away from the length of the veil and the curve facing up like a bowl.
    3. Tie a good sized knot at the end of your thread and run it through the gathered tulle and around the top edge of your veil. Whipstitch along the edge, wrapping between the teeth of the comb and running the needle through the tulle to catch the gathers securely.
    4. Once you're done stitching, flip the comb under so the curve faces down on the wrong side of the veil - the extra inch of fabric will be folded under it, so that and your stitches will get lost in the fluff.

  • Oh, and storage. I'll need to steam mine out and press it somehow. Keeping it wadded up in between working on it means wrinkles. Oops.

  • Thanks Ladies! The different gathering methods described will be super helpful (i'll play around with each). I'm lucky that my parents live about 20 minutes away, so I'll be able to work on it at their house with plenty of space instead of trying to do it in my cramped apartment. It also means I can leave it layed out in my bedroom in between sessions instead of having to put it away every time!
