DIY flowers in Portland?

My future mother-in-law has offered to make our flowers, which is awesome and a money-saver.

I have heard that the public isn't allowed to shop at the flower market in Portland - does anyone have ideas about how to get flowers in bulk? Anyone else out there going this route? You'd think in this city there would be a lot of brides DIYing it, but I just haven't found any info yet.

Thanks for any help!

Re: DIY flowers in Portland?

  • I have looked into Costco.com and Swan Island Dahlias, they might be worth Googling.  Also heard that you can talk to the florist at a local Costco and that they are usually very helpful.  In the past for other events I have gone to a local grocery store (the one I went to was not a chain, not sure if that matters) and talk to their florist, we were able to order wholesale flowers through them.  And yet another idea!  I saw someone post about using a local florist vocational school, and I found one in Portland- the Floral Design Institute, http://www.flowerschool.com/ (looks like they are also on facebook).  I sent them an email and heard back very quickly, she offered to give my information to graduates, and had other good DIY options.  I was thinking of having a graduate help me pick flowers, order them, then teach my team of bridesmaids and family how to make the bouquets and centerpieces.  We'll see what happens.

    Good luck!
  • We are DIY flowers and ordering them all from Costco.  I've read several reviews and all were positive reviews for the most part.
  • We are getting our flowers from Costco as well.  My mom ordered through them for her own wedding a couple of years ago and they looked beautiful!  However, I am ordering rose petals from fiftyflowers.com since I want a lot of rose petals.  I have also heard some positive things about them on the boards.

  • Thank you, everybody! CostCo's website had a lot of choices, we may end up going with them.
  • I agree with Costco. My cousin used them and they were a really good quality.

  • I was also going to suggest Costco. They have a great selection and can usually get you whatever you want. Season permitting.
  • If you are going to go thru costco i suggest going into the closest store to you.  I found that the local stores have way better deals then online.  For example, online 100 roses is around $100.00  in the store closest to me in Hillsboro, OR 75 ivory roses is only $45.00!!!!
