I'm getting married in Jamaica next May. All of the "beach" wedding dresses seem so informal to me, I want something a bit more. I am in love with mermaid style dresses but have not been able to find one in a light fabric  that I like. I really LOVE the dress in the link below but feel it may be too fancy for a beach wedding.

 

Please tell me if I will look ridiculous in this dress in Jamiaca!!

The great thing about destination weddings is they can be as formal or as informal as you want. I wore a satin a-line to my Mexico wedding and it was beautiful. DH wore a tux, as did his groomsmen and the fathers (though no one else did).

That dress is gorgeous and I think it would be fine. As PPs said, even if it's a DW, you can make it as formal as you'd like. 

Is it just me, or does it look like they did some INSANE photoshop on the model in that pic, though? Her shoulders are like three times as broad as any other part of her body.

You need to take a couple things into consideration here - the overall formality of your wedding (not just the location) and your own personal comfort level. Sure, you could wear whatever dress you want, but if the rest of your wedding is casual - guests in shorts, barbecue buffet, canned beer, etc - and you show up in a super formal (read: expensive) dress, you might look out of place and people might judge you for where you allocated your money. Whether or not that judgment is warranted is debatable, but it's something to consider.

As far as personal comfort goes - will you be walking in the sand? That dress has a LOT of layers to worry about shaking/brushing sand out of. It'll be loaded full of it within steps. Is that something you want to deal with, or would you rather have something you can pick up a bit easier, with fewer layers? It'll also be pretty hot under all that fabric. Consider whether you'll be too hot and sticky to enjoy yourself.

It's a gorgeous dress though. Formal sunset ceremony on a patio or pier with a plated meal? Perfect, even if it's a beach. Luau and bonfire in the sand? Ehhh not so much.

It looks like we will be getting married either on a boardwalk or a gazebo type thing, probably not in the sand. But, we will take some pictures on the beach.  

Also, I'm worried about transporting a dress like that.

You'll definitely want to take the dress as your carry-on and check your other luggage. Ask if the flight attendants will hang it in their closet for you.

I had a DW to FL (Disney World).  I had a HUGE ballgown and ended up shipping my dress to a vendor that Disney worked with, so shipping is an option (though a scary one).  There are also videos that can show you how to fold/roll your dress so you can fit it in a carry-on bag.

Wear a dress you feel comfortable in.  Just because it's a DW does not mean you're 'stuck' with one of the light weight, breezy DW dresses that you always see.  If you want a mermaid, get a mermaid.  Try the dress on, make sure if suits your wedding venue and the look/feel you're going for and also the formality of the wedding.

I agree with previous posters that the dress is gorgeous and perfectly suitable style-wise for a beach destination wedding. I think if you keep the event's formality in line with the dress, you'll be just fine. By "keep the formality in line" I mean your fiance's attire, the time of day of your wedding, the type of reception to follow. Just because you're beach side doesn't mean that people can't wear something more formal than shorts and an aloha shirt.  

However, I do think the comfort of the dress is important. I'm not certain how thick of heavy it is, but you'll need to make sure you can be comfortable in tropical heat. I'm getting married in Hawaii and just ordered a very light weight dress. Several of the dresses I tried on were lovely but just too thick and heavy for me to wear. My dress is not quite as formal as yours but more formal than many of the "beachy" dresses I've seen. 

I opted for a customized version of a Modern Trousseau dress, but here are some trumpet style dresses I really liked. They may not all quite flare out as much as you want since you mentioned a mermaid style, but they're within the realm. My favorites were the Nicole Miller's (which are all essentially the same dress cut with different fabrics/details). I enjoyed the Allure, and I think Allure probably has even more mermaid gowns that the tiny salon I visited did not have.

I love that dress! You're the one that sets the formality for your wedding, so if you want a fancier dress go for it! Especially if you'll be in a gazebo or something and not on sand.

That dress is stunning! If you want to wear a fancy dress, go for it. Just because it's a destination wedding doesn't mean you are limited to looking at dresses in that category. Wear whatever makes you feel like a beautiful bride!

While the dresses look pretty overall, I find it so hard to even imagine myself wearing one of them because the models are so unrealistic. Yes, there are some tall thin women out there, but their arms don't look like uneven toothpicks!

Ugh, ugh.  I am so annoyed about this, I think I am going to write to the company.  I am sick of digital mutilation of women's bodies (of already gorgeous, skinny models no less).

I just bought a David Tutera dress, and looking at the photo on the website, I would hardly believe it was the same dress!

Mine is quite similar to yours, but tulle over taffeta instead of satin.

Gorgeous dress!  While I'll preface my answer with wear whatever you want because it's your wedding, I do think it would be a lot of dress for a Jamaican wedding.  Taffeta is a light, sleek looking fabric...There are so many other factors to consider though...What kind of neckline are you looking for, straps or no straps, budget, etc...

In that case, chances are that you won't even find this specific dress... I went to a trunk show this weekend specifically because I thought they would at least have all the current dresses by that designer, but that was certainly not the case!

Don't worry at all about this specific dress until you find it and love it on!

I have to say, if it's satin it's going to be pretty warm underneath that dress. I have a satin gown for my winter wedding and I would definitely not have chosen the same dress if my wedding was in the summer, especially not if it was somewhere tropical.
