  • I think that show promotes mental abuse towards women, and I think it is far more dangerous than the stupid Kardashians or Honey BooBoo (even though I would never watch those shows).  I mean on TV Michelle Duggar said "always leave yourself open to your husband." WTF. That goes a little beyond religious belief and more into the cult realm. I would say the same thing if there were a tv show about the Warren Jeffs' "church."

I respectfully disagree.  Granted, I don't watch any of these shows (my reallity preference is the Bachelor series), so I can't speak too intelligently about them.  But, based on the premise, I think shows like the Kardashians and HoneyBooBoo.  I think while there are aspects about the Duggar's faith that I find to be troublesome, I think a show about a family living happily together is more edifying than a show about a kid with attitude on the pageant circuit or a show about socialites.

Just because everyone is smiling doesn't mean they're happy.
I agree with that 100% and am a perfect example of that.  And my preference of the Duggars over the Kardashians is biased.  Let me explain ...

I know several families IRL who have 10+ children.  One of the families (I'll call them the House family) lived in our neighborhood and I was in the same grade as their 3rd eldest.  This family attended our church and we'd often joke about how many pews it took to hold their family.  As far as I know, at least 6 of the kids are now married with families of their own.  One of the kids is studying to become a priest, and the rest are in college or are young adults.

The House family is one of those families that you can't just help but love.  The kids were popular, friendly, funny, and athletic.  The kids were often voted to the Homecoming Court and the Student Council.

The House family is devoutly Catholic and doesn't believe in artificial birth control as well.  I don't think they ascribe to the Quiverfull movement, but I don't know that for a fact.  They lived in a nice house in nice neighborhood.  The kids drove used cars and the mom drove a van that became infamous in the neighborhood once the kids started going to college and adding their bumper stickers to the car.  So, they weren't irresponsible as far as providing for the family.

Mrs.House stayed at home and Mr. House owned a company.  They are one of the coolest, nicest, friendliest families I've ever met.  I would much rather have a family like them than the Kardashians.

It's unfortunate that these passages are taken out of context.   I know of a Christian scholar who says that a woman should be upset by those first two passages.  It takes reading the other verses with it to understand the whole picture.
This is a really tiny detail, but my understanding is that the Quiverfull movement doesn't allow for any type of family planning at all. Like if God Almighty wants more babies, the women will wake up ~*with child*~
But Catholics allow for natural family planning (i.e., BBT method, not having sex around time of ovulation), but don't believe in Hormonal BC.

I grew up Catholic but I don't practice so I could have this wrong. I think NFP can be great when done correctly, but I think families like the Duggars don't allow the couples to attempt to avoid pregnancy, period. And that just seems miserable. (no wine? no margs?)

I can't speak with any authority regarding the Quiverfull movement, but I can speak regarding Catholicism. Yes, Natural Family Planning is allowed when a couple has a reason to space pregnancies (and this is for the couple to discern .... It's not like a couple has to get a dispensation from a bishop to use NFP to space pregnancies. Personally, I have fertility issues ... So I use nfp to try to conceive. But I know MANY couples who use NFP to space their pregnancies.

Holyguac, I absolutely agree with you that that movement is taking passages out of context and skewing their interpretation.

  • I agree with him.
"And once a Duggar girl is married, says Mom, she is never allowed to say no to sex. “Duggar women don’t get headaches,” Michelle told Us. 'You always need to be available when he calls.' And if you’re not always available—if you do get a headache, or you’re just not in the mood one night, or if turns out that your husband prefers Dad’s auditions—then you’re to blame when your husband cheats on you." (from the article above) pissed me right off though.  What kind of woman teaches her daughters that they cannot say no to sex?  What kind of husband wants his wife to lie there while he does his deed, knowing she really doesn't want to fuck him at the moment.  JFC, I just can't.

Did anyone else see the instagram photo that Jessa posted of them kissing?

For someone that was so against kissing at their own wedding in order to keep it private, it seems a little odd to post such an intimate photo. It doesn't help that it looks like she's eating him and he's just sitting there not kissing her back.

I don't watch the duggars or really know which is which, but I feel like one of them is thirsty for fame- I think its Jessa who just got married.  I think (maybe just hope) that one of them is going to break out from the family. Maybe to get her own "no longer a duggar show"

I just find it incredibly disturbing that parents are talking about their children's sex lives. My parents gave me the talk. They told me, "You can choose safe sex or you can choose abstinence." Then, they just always assumed I was a virgin.  They never asked; it wasn't any of their business. I understand it can be your business when you have a young child living in your house, but at 21.... none of your business. And, I certainly don't think it is any random person's business. They broadcast their daughters' virginity like they are talking about the weather, or what color car they would like to buy.
Then, conservatives get mad when people say they are a cult. If they don't like people disagreeing, then maybe they should not be oversharing their lives. It is one thing to promote no sex before marriage, but no handholding, no hugging, no kissing.  People did this in the 1950s, and the Duggars are equating these gestures to indecent exposure. It is one thing to be modest, but it is another to teach your children to be ashamed of a natural part of dating.  They act like their daughetrs will get an STD from handholding and to save it for "the one."  So, when they shake hands when meeting people, does that equate to foreplay?

I grew up in a similar Catholic environment.  As a family with 5 children, we were one of the smaller families in the parish.

  • I also agree with this comment : I do hope that several (at least!) of these children break free from the mold. They don't have to #fuckfirst, if THEY choose not to, but it should be their choice, a VERY personal choice, not a very creepy choice rammed down their throat from parents who are entirely too consumed with the reproductive organs of their children from the time they came out of Michelle's vagina.

I have zero problems with waiting till marriage if that is what YOU want. But if my parents were that obsessed about the matter, I would find in creepy.
    image
  • I'm a long-time Dan Savage fan. I don't always agree with him 100% but I think his views tend to be thoughtful. #fuckfirst is one of my favorite mottos.

I agree with the PPs on the creepiness of the parents on their children's virginity. However, it seems to me that this is part of how they rate themselves as parents. They would see themselves as failures if their children weren't virgins at marriage so they advertise their perceived success wherever possible. They're marketing themselves.

I keep coming back to how sad I feel for the girls. It's one thing to choose a lifestyle for yourself knowingly, it is something entirely different to marry and follow a path because you don't know anything different. I keep seeing ads for all of these Amish shows on tv and can't help but think that the Duggars would benefit from their own rumspringas.

Also, I can't help but think Josh might be the devil. Working for the Family Research Council makes him a terrible person. The fact that his wife looks dead on the inside and that he's training his daughters to be little puppets makes him evil.

They make me sick. Keep in mind, what we see on the TV show is only what they're willing to share. And they do pay attention to ratings. After Michelle discussed "blanket training" and how to hit your baby with a wooden spoon when they crawled off the blanket, the network was swamped with outraged letters. The topic was never addressed again.
When the girls approached college age, again, the TV audience began responding to the lack of education being offered. Suddenly, the oldest girls are enrolled in online classes. How liberal!

Fact is, the Duggars are big supporters and advocates of Michael Pearlman. They promote his book on their website. He's the psycho author of books and tapes explaining how to raise your quiverfull child. The Dr. Spock of the quiverfull world.

When it comes to sexual education, I shudder to think what those kids have been taught.
Mr. Pearlman is of the opinion that kids are born sinners.
Here, if you can stomach it:

He offers his advice on what to do "When The Worst Happens." When you catch your child playing at sexual exploration, either alone, or taking a look at other kid's equipment. (When I grew up, it was called "playing doctor," and parents had a kind of, meh, it happens, don't show the neighbor kids your hoohaw again, kind of attitude.)

Mr. Pearlman believes that even a child of 2-5 might be "walking on the dark side." Knowingly violating their conscience. You have a sinner in the house. They need to see your "disgust, your tears, your grief." They need to be physically punished. He offers helpful advice of how to distribute the punishment over a wide area of the body, to avoid visible bruising. After that, they need to be sat down and given their biblical lessons on God's displeasure. Don't forget to include the sufferings of eternal hell.

I freak out when people say, oh, they look so happy. You bet. Part of the quiverfull training is that happiness is the only emotion a child should display. Any other countenance is a mark of disrespect to your parents and God, and later, of course, to your husband. Keep smiling.

I just can't with the frikking Duggars.

Oh, wow. I didn't know any of this. How disgusting.
