Avoiding Getting Sick?

Hi y'all- curious if any of you ladies did anything in particular in the week or two leading up to your weddings to avoid getting sick?  I'm getting married in three weeks and with cold and flu season just starting to get underway where I live and with the heightened stress of the run-up to the wedding that might compromise my and/or my FI's immune systems, I'm interested if anyone has any helpful tips!

Re: Avoiding Getting Sick?

  • Echinacea and goldenseal for about a week beforehand will boost your immune system.

Note: I did not follow my own advice and lost my voice the first day of my honeymoon. :-p

  • Wash your hands- a lot and for 15-20 seconds.

I also take zinc and vitamin c during this time of year.

  • If you aren't already doing it, bleach your sheets and towels at least once a week. Germs love to live there.
  • And don't forget to disinfect the stuff you touch all the time like the keyboard, mouse, tv remote. Also try not to stress out. Being stressed lowers your immune system.
  • SLEEP.

And by sleep I mean sleep aids cause you are getting married soon!!!!

  • I love this stuff called Emergen-C. You can get it at CVS or the grocery store or wherever and there's generic brands too. It's little packets of powder with like 10,000 milligrams of vitamin C and then a bunch of other vitamins. Mix it with water or Sprite or whatever and drink it.

I always do that if I feel the slightest bit like I'm getting a cold and it always seems to help.

  • I honestly didn't do anything special at all...but I rarely get sick so I guess I wasn't overly worried about it.

What I did do was try to get plenty of rest every night. If I felt that I was getting too stressed out I'd make myself take a step back and calm down again before continuing with my plans for the day. Drink lots and lots of water, try to remember to take your daily vitamin (I'm terrible with this).

  • I was sick the week before my wedding. It sucked and I was pissed.

Just make sure to get a lot of rest. Don't stress yourself out too much. Drink echinacea. And wash your hand frequently throughout the day.
  • I didn't do anything approaching the wedding, but whenever I start to feel a bug coming on I start drinking Emergen-C twice a day. It works like a charm.

  • Agree with PPs.  Rest - try your hardest to get uninterrupted, deep sleep.  Stay hydrated.  Keep your goals for yourself (wedding and non-wedding related) manageable.  I found to-do lists to be super important, not only because they helped me focus but because I wasn't trying to keep a mental list and therefore worrying about what I might forget.  Take time regularly to do something that's restorative.  For me, it was reading something in the evening.

Definitely be attentive to hand washing - use a good quality lotion to keep your skin from becoming dry.  I like vitamin C as well.

  • Every time I feel a cold coming on, I go to the store for a bottle each of Vitamin Water, Gatorade, Orange Juice, Tomato Juice, and chocolate milk.  I'll also pick up something like Airborne or EmergenC, and drink a large glass of regular water in between every one of the other drinks.  If I end up actually getting a cold, I believe highly in the magical forces of liquid cold medicine.  So I have the orange stuff for daytime, and the green/blue stuff for nighttime.

This might be a dumb question... can you do that without changing the color?  Our sheets and towels are black and I always thought using bleach, well, bleached things!

All this advice is great ladies!  I'm definitely going to look into this stuff... I'm SO bad at remembering to stay hydrated so that's going to be on the top of my list.

I could be wrong too, but I think there's a colorsafe bleach out there.  I remember seeing commercials for it.

Sleep, deal with stress by taking a walk or doing something that relaxes you.  Wash your hands and eat well too.

  • Another vote here for EmergenC-- i freaking love that shit!! DH gave me sooo much crap about it, because I started to feel myself getting sick and loaded up on EmergenC like a crazy person. He was convinced that it was just a placebo effect that I "magically" started to feel better after a few days of Vitamin C. Odd how that works....

Wash your hands with soap and hot water- do not use hand sanitizer, that crap is generally worthless.  For alcohol, the main ingredient in that stuff,  to effectively kill bacteria it needs to be at least 70% and it needs to be fresh or else the concentration will decrease and it won't work.

Don't touch your face, especially your eyes.

Drink lots of fluids, Emergen-C is great as are any of the Naked drinks but especially the Power C Machine one.  Zinc, echinacea, and ginseng are good immune boosters too.  Steer clear of Gatorade- it's basically artificial flavoring and processed sugars.  There are better ways to replace electrolytes- http://foodbabe.com/2012/07/10/the-secret-behind-gatorade-how-to-replenish-electrolytes-naturally/

Try to get a lot of rest- yeah I know, yeah right! ;-)

Yes! They make color safe bleach. It's good to do this all the time because our beds get pretty nasty. Don't get me started on dust mites.

Plus it helps if you're prone to acne!
  • Disclaimer: Assuming you are not allergic or have sensitive skin to things like hydrogen peroxide, bleach etc. That would obvi make worse skin problems.

I have sensitive skin, and I use vinegar to sanitize towels and sheets.

  • FI and I are both sick right now, him worse than me. We're getting married in 8 days, but I hope we'll both be better by then.

If you do start to get sick (sore throat, cough, snuffles), I make "ginger sick tea": cup with 1TBS crystalized ginger, pour over 12 fl oz boiling water, stir in 1 TBS lemon juice and 1 TBS honey (local, if you can get it). This twice a day has kept me slightly stuffy for a week instead of full-blown sick.

Also, another vote for emergen-C or the generic brand.
