Need some good vibes!

So as most of you know, we just adopted our kitty, Zillie. Well this got me to thinking...dangerous thing.

I have been so bored lately--like cry I am bored--and really need a hobby. I just submitted my application to volunteer at a local animal shelter! I am nervous and excited and really hope that they give me a chance to interview with them. It said that they will reach out in 7-10 business days if my application meets their criteria and then I would have a quick phone interview. Volunteering is something I have wanted to do for a really long time, now and this just presented itself at the perfect opportunity.

I don't really have a question or point to this except to ask for some good vibes. When should I follow up with the shelter? 10 days? 15?

  • Aww that's great!! I love animals and two of our furbabies are rescues, and are the best pets.  Maybe follow up in about two weeks?

  • that's awesome!   I'd give them 2 weeks before reaching out. I volunteer with a boxer rescue, and we just get TONS of emails and messages, it's really hard to keep up sometimes.  But, it's not because we don't need or want the help.  It just takes time to get through everything.

Congrats for doing this. It will be heartbreaking, and there will be tears, and then there will be huge smiles to make up for it.  :)

  • Another vote for 2 weeks. The volunteer coordinator is likely a volunteer position itself so response time could be lagged.

Not sure which shelter your looking at but if it falls through for some reason, I'd recommend checking out the Denver Municipal Animal Shelter. They are always looking for volunteers. I did a summer cleaning cages/walking dogs. I choose the "death row" dogs because they seemed so neglected & forgotten about - it was heartbreaking but wonderful to provide them some lovin' during their last days.

  • No recommendations beyond those of the PPs but just wanted to say how awesome it is that you're doing this!

  • Go you!!!  I really, really want to volunteer with our local dog shelter....I'm just terrified that I will get way too emotionally invested/start bringing home ALL the dogs.

  • You have to apply? It seems like that would push away volunteers! At my local shelter we just show up and take some dogs for a walk. Have fun and good for you!
