Suggestions for who to walk me down the isle...

My mother keeps asking me this question. Let me start by saying my father died when I was like 12 and my mother does not even have a boyfriend.

I have 3 brothers. But Iam not super close to any of them over the other and Iam afraid if I choose one of them the other two will show hostility.

Iam ok with walking down the idle by myself ... But I am a bit afraid that I may change my mind when the time comes. It shows a bit of independence to walk it by myself, right?!

I asked my fiancé (who has been helpful in all of the wedding planning) and he said I should do what my heart says. I just don't know what that is because on one hand I want my brothers there but it don't wanna pick one and three is a bit ridiculous.

Anyone else been here? Have any suggestions? Advice or comments. Iam typically a pro and con person.

  • Why not have your mom walk you down the aisle? It's a little non-traditional, but I've seen it done before. I think that would be lovely!

this is what I was going to suggest also. In Jewish tradition, both parents walk the bride down the aisle, so that's what I'm doing. If my dad wasn't around, we have a close family friend who's always bee like a father to me, so I'd ask him. Or I'd have my mom and my grandma walk me. Or even just my mom.

This is one of those situations where you shouldn't worry about tradition. Just think of a special person who's very close to your heart and ask that person, if you don't want to walk alone.

  • Why can't your mother or some other special person in your life walk you down the aisle?  I think you can choose one or all of your brothers, for that matter, to escort you.  It's okay to have more than one escort.  Or, you could walk on your own.

You could also walk down the aisle with your FI, starting your marriage together.  That is how it was always done traditionally in the Catholic Church until more modern times when it became more common place for the father to escort his daughter in.

You could have 2 of your brothers escort you in and then have the "father/daughter" dance with the last brother.   That would give each of them a "turn" if you are trying to be fair.

I do really like the idea of you being escorted in by your mom.  That would be really lovely!

You should choose someone you are close to and who have help support you while you were raised.  So you could even choose a close uncle or Godfather.  You really have no wrong answer here, just make sure you are comfortable with whatever is chosen.

  • You could have your mom walk you down the aisle. Or you could walk with your FI.
  • I'm sorry to hear about your dad.

Both my mom and dad walked me down the aisle. If my dad had passed away, I would have asked just my mom to do it. It doesn't have to be a man.

  • My sister had our mom walk her down the aisle. I think that's a perfectly beautiful alternative if you wish to go that route. I'm leaning toward walking alone, as I'm an independent person and reflects who I am more (I've been in my own since I was 20). I second your FI, go with your heart, even if it means asking someone the day or week before.

  • The person that walks you down the aisle does not have to be male.  It should be a person that you trust and love and feel close with.  It could mean your Mom or it could be a very good friend. Heck your MOH could walk you down.  Then when you reach the front she takes her place next to you.  An Uncle, an Aunt, a Grandparent, etc, etc, etc.

  • My sister/MOH is walking me down. My sister walked down alone. My cousin had her mom walk her down as she was in a similar boat as you.
