Favorite vacation cocktail: dirty monkey. It's some banana, rum, ice concoction that the cute little Mexican bartenders create at the resort we like to frequent.

I'm a craft beer snob with a dirty secret of Hamm's typically.

  • Margaritas or straight tequila. Depends on how crazy I want to get - though I can get pretty stupid looking at alcohol so . . .

  • If loving mojitos is wrong, I don't want to be right. And I wouldn't kick a margarita out of bed.
But I mostly just stick with red wine.

ETA: I forgot that I love the shit out of mimosas.
ooh I drink mojitos in the summer like nobody's business! I grow a huge mint plant just for that purpose :)
Another thing I got stuck on this summer was gin and tonic with a splash of lavender syrup. OMG delicious!

I guess my drinking habits are seasonal. I love Manhattans but would never drink one in the summer. And when we were in the mountains this summer I didn't want a mojito just because of our surroundings... It all depends on the time and place, really.

well I know what I'm trying this weekend! I

Not a huge cocktail drinker here. If I'm out and want one, I'll stick with vodka or gin and tonic. I do like mojitos and you can never steer me wrong with a margarita. Most of the time though, I'm going with whatever craft beer a place has or red wine.

OMG you guys need to come to Traverse City, MI. There's a local small batch/artisan distillery that has a "Jack Pine Gin" that's made with lavender. It's amazing in a gin and tonic with a bit of orange instead of lemon. They have a bar inside where you can get all kinds of fancy cocktails.

  • Let me tell you all a story of what not to do when ordering drinks on vacation, especially if you are vacationing abroad.

DH and I went to Ireland for our honeymoon and the last few days we were there we stayed at a castle outside of Shannon that was a 5 star resort.  One afternoon we were enjoying a pint at the bar when 2 tour buses pulled in, full primarily of American Blue Hairs from somewhere in the south.  Their rooms are not ready yet so they come into the bar to enjoy a drink while they wait.  A group of 6-8 sit at a table next to us and begin ordering Irish Coffees and tea.

Then one says to our very proper and semi-stuffy bartender, in the heaviest, most obnoxious drawl ever, "Don't y'all serve any American drinks, like a frozen pina colada?!"

Are you fucking kidding me?!  You're in a fucking castle that is older than our country. . . it looks like Downton Flipping Abbey.  This isn't the swim up bar at a freaking Sandals resort!  They don't put umbrellas in drinks here.  You're in Ireland, why not have a Guinness or a hot whiskey?!

DH and I considered bursting into "Oh Canada" on the spot.

Don't be "those Americans" on vacation ><

    Oh he wouldn't have dared!

He just looked at her kinda stunned for a sec, and then very diplomatically told her he could make her one, if only he had a machine to crush the ice.

That sounds amazing! We have a local distillery here that makes a pretty great gin - Seneca Drums gin. Citrusy with juniper and cucumber. They also have a traditional London-style gin that's pretty awesome. The distillery itself is neat in the fact that they'll do tastings and if you don't want the liquor straight up, they'll make you a little mini cocktail.

Uh, where is this place? I need that gin in my life.

In the Caribbean, most places have a mysterious "rum punch" which is just fresh fruit juice and rum and it is so fucking good. The ones in Belize are the best. In Hawaii I drank a lot of mai tais but they are super sugary, and sometimes they are downright bad.

My favorite cocktails ever though are a mix of vodka or gin, elderflower liquor, and lemon juice. They go down easy.
You HAVE to get a mai tai at Brennecke's. Theirs are the best.

When I want to pretend I'm Patsy Stone, I have a bellini. Well, I'm not sure if it's really a bellini because I either put Pallini Peachcello or peach Ciroc in my champagne.

Either way it's peach shit and champagne.

Holy fucking hell, that sounds amazing.

FI fell in love with "All I Do Is Win" and because Ludacris mentions Ciroc, he bought 4 bottles. I don't know why FI so badly wants to be a baller, but now I can make something new!

I've always been a wine or vodka/soda girl, but if it's made by someone who knows what they're doing I'll be adventurous.

OH, I was at a wedding show where they have free vodka (YAY!) and they were making drinks with lemonade and whipped cream vodka. Tasted like lemon meringue pie!

  • I love myself a good margarita. However, when I was in Kauai, I had a Hanalei Bay Breeze. It's coconut vodka, cranberry juice, and pineapple juice. They were fucking amazing!!!!

My parents just got back from Kauai this past weekend. They'd been sending me drink pictures the whole time. At one point, my aunt got some kind of toasted coconut drink. Not to mention the COUNTLESS lava flows (thats a pina colada with a swirl of strawberry puree), mai tais, tai chis, and other tropical boozy drinks.

I can't wait until the honeymoon.

  • @esstee33 In the Finger Lakes in WNY. On Seneca Lake. There is also a winery that right next door and you can walk between the two.

  • I'm gonna have to look into some drinks to try while in Hawaii for our honeymoon.  FI and I drink wine a lot, but I did introduce him to vodka tonics.  We both like using flavored vodkas in those, although I draw the line at this nastiness (although I did try a shot of it at the McCormick store that's in Weston MO because it was only 25 cents for the shot):
I am a big fan of Lava Flows.  They are a strawberry daiquiri rimmed around the glass with a pina colada to fill it up.  I have found them in a few places, but they are very prevelant in Hawaii!
  • @cupcait927 You da best. That's within day trip distance! :D
  • In honeymoon life, I drank the shit out of Coco Loco's (the resort's signature drink). Basically a strong-as-shit pina colada served inside a coconut. Hell yes.

In real life, I'm in on red or white sangria and mojitos if I'm feeling fancy.

White wine and vodka tonics when I just wanna get buzzed.

There are also like a million wineries and breweries around Seneca Lake so if you want more suggestions, let me know :)

I love Lava Flows, but the only good ones I've had were in Hawaii.  Lava Flows outside of Hawaii (or another tropical destination, I'm guessing) have never been good for me.

  • I can't really drink liquor because it makes me really ill, but sometimes I will have a mai tai, zombie, or strawberry dacqueri. Yum!

I always just drink beer, though. Usually something boring like Miller Lite or Yuengling.

That would be the most fun GTG. Everyone can just book a room and we can all get silly on wine and gin all weekend.

Important question. Can we rent an official TK party bus to get us there?

Haha I'm sure we could, but where would it come from? The farthest person away from this winery in upstate NY can rent a bus and then just pick everyone else up along the way? :P
