Need some gardening advice

I just pulled in the last of my potted plants from outside.
One of them was a strawberry plant I potted.

As I was cleaning it up and getting rid of the dead leaves I noticed 2 things in the soil.
Tiny clear balls, when popped they had a liquid in them.
And a bunch of little mushrooms.

Now, through my extensive Googling, I think the balls are slow release fertilizer from my potting soil I used and the mushrooms are "bird's nest fungi".

Because location sometimes matters in these situations:  I live in Upstate New York.  Just had our first snowfall yesterday.  This plant has been outside since I potted it this spring.  I didn't water it other than what the rain provided.

Greenthumbs:
Do you think I should put it back outside?
Is the fungi going to cause issues to humans?  We only have a lizard in the house and he's housed on the other side of the house in a different room.

Do you think my findings on what the balls or fungi is wrong?

Attached are a couple pictures and tried doing arrows so you can see what I mean.

  • You're correct that the balls are from the potting soil and no biggie. I wouldn't worry about the fungi. Keep the plant relatively dry and near a sunny window. Put it outside next spring. Typically strawberry plants are in-ground perennials so you may want to plant it in a sunny spot where it can multiply next year. Did you get any fruit this year?
  • @NYCMercedes - I had the intention to start myself a little veggie garden this year, but at the last minute I decided not to.  So instead of wasting the already bought plants I put them in a pot so I could figure out what I wanted to do.
I did get a handful of really tart berries.  I'm betting I would have had more, but the squirrel that chills out in the tree above our deck was stealing them.  I'd find the tops on the railing every now and again.

  • Squirrels are the pits. You can put milk or soap water, or onion, garlic, or chili POWDER on them to dissuade the critters.
  • I do a fair amount of gardening here in California, though I am absolutely not an expert by any stretch of the imagination. I have never had mushrooms or rando balls appear in any of my planters. I imagine we have very different climates. I love that you are growing your own food and that PPs could help!
