Re: Favorite Thanksgiving Foods

  • amelisha how much GranMa do you add to the cranberry sauce? I usually just line the bottom of the saucepan with water and stick a bag of cranberries, cup of sugar, lemon and orange zest. GranMa sounds amazing.

I'm obsessed with Ina's sausage and herb stuffing. And everything else Ina makes. Now only if I had unlimited money and time....
My recipe says 3 Tablespoons ber bag of cranberries.  Don't add it until after cooking.

  • I cannot wait for Thanksgiving after reading this thread!

I love ALL the things on Thanksgiving. Turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, cranberries...FOOD COMA!

  • I wish I had more to add, but I'm on the cheese and crackers or the deviled egg committee. My aunt who is seriously the "hostess with the mostest" makes so much amazing, artistic food that no one wants to or could even try to compete. I do dream that one day Thanksgiving will be MY (oh, I mean our, of course) holiday, though.

Really? I would never do it that way. I like booze but in cranberry sauce I want the alcohol cooked out.

I'm no help. I like just normal plain thanksgiving food.   Better yet a turkey, cranberry, stuffing sandwich on white bread with light mayo the next day.

Everything you mentioned sounds good though.

I love stuffing, mashed potatoes, homemade gravy, and the sweet potatoes with the marshmallows on top :-)

  • Mmmm, I love my grandma's Thanksgiving.  It's pretty traditional southern style cooking, I think.  It's really all my favorite.  My mom brings apps, but we keep them small and simple (veggies/crackers/chips with dip, cream cheese and pepper jelly, cheese and sausage, etc.)

I am obsessed with the cornbread dressing, NOT stuffing!!  I will not eat something that was shoved inside the bird.  Ew.

Next (or equal because I really love it all) is sweet potato casserole.  We cook a ton of sweet potatoes until they're super soft, mix with sugar and eggs and a little vanilla, and top with "praline" topping (pecans, butter, self-rising flour, sugar).  Get those marshmallows away from me!

One thing I absolutely adore that I've never had anywhere else is my grandma's "cranberry surprise."  It's basically just a congealed fruit salad, but it is so damn good.  That's the only form of cranberries we have at Thanksgiving.  I think one person brings some canned stuff for themselves.

I also love giblet gravy.  My family is heavily divided on this, so my grandma usually makes two batches.

For dessert, it's pecan pie all the way.  Grandma also makes a really good peanut butter pie.  Someone usually brings a pumpkin pie for dessert if some poor soul wants to eat that, but nobody ever does.

I think we're normal other than that.  We just have our simple turkey (slathered in fat, sprinkled with salt), creamed potatoes (super smooth mashed potatoes with an unspeakable amount of butter and cream in them), green beans (not the casserole), peas and corn (always put on top of mashed potatoes because the plate is too full for them to have their own spot), squash casserole, and usually a green salad and fresh fruit for some reason.

We wash it all down with sweet tea.

Okay, so is it the 27th yet?
That's the best, though.  It gets moist and flavored by the turkey as it cooks.

    Indeed!!!!

But I eat mine like an open faced hot turkey sandwich drowned in gravy.

Trust me, it's great!  I am not a big booze hound, either.

I made that brie and pear tart for Brunchgiving last year! It was excellent. It's making an appearance again this year.

    I make Tday shepherd's pie.

Layers from top to bottom in a glass pan:

    Taters
    Stuffing
    Gravy
    Turkey

Bake at 350 until you get a little golden brown on the tater peaks. Eat it and enjoooooy your life.

Bruchgiving? As in all the best foods ever instead of Thanksgiving?!?  I must do this!

Yep! Instead of having another giant dinner, we have a brunch with Thanksgiving themed foods (turkey quiche, pumpkin French toast, sweet potato home fries) the weekend after with whichever side of the family we didn't see Thursday.

Ditto but sub green bean casserole for the stuffing.
  • Turkey, mashed potatoes, ice cream with apple crisp, and wine. Lots of wine.

Add green beans or peas....because my husband and my mother make me act like an adult and eat green veggies.

I love, however, a recipe I found for apple stuffed acorn squash. Just the right balance between sweet and savory. I've linked it below. Differences I do- I score the interior of the squash when I take it out of the oven, and put in a tiiiiny amount of salted butter and brown sugar, just to melt it in and start flavoring the squash.
