So grossed out by Facebook

Actually I don't even know if "grossed out" is the way to describe it. Disgusted, disappointed, appalled??

My dogs' vet has a Facebook account where they post cute photos of animals, health advice for pets, etc and it's really fun to see what they post. Yesterday they posted a link to an actual existing Facebook page for Dog Fighting. As in, the page/group is promoting it. Fans of it. The vet asked all their followers to report this page to Facebook so that it would be permanently taken down. Apparently the page is based out of India, where apparently dog fighting is legal? But I don't really care. No matter what the law states, dog fighting is atrocious and horrible. And for the record, it IS illegal in the US, in all 50 states, and Facebook is a US-based company.

I reported it and asked for the page to be taken down. This morning I get an alert from Facebook that my report had been "reviewed" and it was deemed that there was NOTHING WRONG WITH THE GROUP so it would not be taken down.

So let's call this what it is. Facebook is condoning dog fighting. It seriously makes me feel sick to my stomach just to know that there are "fans" of this horrific practice, but on top of that the group won't be removed? Just gross. Sad and gross.

Re: So grossed out by Facebook

  • That seriously grosses me out. There are groups and pictures taken down every day over stupid shit. A breast feeding mom? Gone. A political group? Bye. There was a company whose picture was removed advertising gun safes and vaults because FB does not allow an advertising of firearms or ammo. This was a safe. It's gone. But dog fight? Nope that's okay.

There was recently a page started on FB for a family in my area whose dog was shot and killed. This family lives up the road from us. A boy (who I know and went to school with) was hunting on the land adjacent to them (he leased it) and their dog was running a deer on their land. He walked towards their land and shot the dog in the head. Then had the audacity to post on a hunting group on FB and BRAG about it! People flipped their shit on him. Now, everyone in the county knows about it and charges are being pressed.

  • Good, I'm glad he's facing charges. That is awful.

But as far as this dog fighting page, I'm not finished.

.If you PM me the page, i will gladly report them as well. That's total bull shit. Keep fighting.

  • That's terrible. Maybe if we all report it, they'll do something.

Thanks, that is awesome! I'll see if I can look it up. Otherwise I'll send it when I get home (my company blocks facebook from our network)

Do you know if it's against TOS for me to post a link to it in this thread?

    I have no idea.
  • I think it's digusting and all that, and of course if you post it I'll help report it. However, if it's an Indian based group and it's legal in India, they probably can't take it down with a good excuse. I'm sure they have different countries hosting different facebook servers. I doubt the US is in charge of all of them, even if the US started it.

  • Good! All the more reason those idiots should have just taken it down.

However, I can't find the page right now so I messaged the vet and asked them to send me the link. I'm starting to wonder if I can't find it because maybe it did get taken down. Obviously not as a result of my request, but maybe enough people complained or someone else called them on a technicality? I hope it's down, but I'm not letting this go till I know for sure.

  • Dog fighting is terrible, cruel, and should be illegal everywhere (IMHO).

But to pose a philosophical question here, at what point should a socially influential powerhouse like FB decide on what people can share/not share? Should an international company (wherever they're based) be able to filter what you see based on popular opinion, their own local law, and/ or some set of moral rules agreed upon by their board? Even if its legal where the activity is taking place? What if they had a moral filter you didn't agree with? What if their laws were oppressive?

Morally, I agree with you on the issue of dog fighting (and cock fighting, and and and...) But I think the question of how much power should Facebook have, should they base it on local law, and who decides are very interesting ones.

That is an interesting point, and there is definitely a lot of gray area. But, I still fight for not allowing dog fighting content, even if it is legal in a certain place, because it promotes animal cruelty. It's vicious and violent, and that should be enough for an international social media powerhouse to say No.

They also might have made it private. Remember Dextergate?
    Aw shit.

    Good point.

I think if they did decide not to censor what is posted, then it should be consistent.

  • emmaaa that's a really good point too. I find it extremely disturbing that Facebook is quick to block/delete/take down a breastfeeding mom, but then leaves the dog fighting group alone. If they insist on censoring, then they need to be consistent. If they want to leave it open as a free-for-all, then so be it. But they can't do both.

Something similar to the dog situation happened out by me. I don't know if anyone came forward about shooting the dog, but I think there's a loophole that if you're hunting in a non-posted area and a dog disturbs your hunt, you can shoot them.

I'm not clear on that, but it's FUCKED UP. I kind of want to find the guy and run him over with a train somehow.

It is one thing to shoot someone's pet, that alone is awful. But he posted a video of it and bragged about it. Admitted it. He knew who the dog belonged to. Afterwards he went to their house and said he meant to shoot over her to scare her off. The family then found his posts bragging that he shot her on purpose.

As far as I am aware, it will at least be considered destruction of personal property. It is a weird situation because the dogs were on their own property and he shot onto their land. He is a piece of crap.

    Ditto.

  • I reported it yesterday as well. Got a similar response. Like you're kidding me?

    image
  • There's apparently no way to report something that you can't see (in this category). I just tried multiple different ways to just contact Facebook and/or file a report. There is a category to click on to report "something I can't see" so I tried that. But it required me to put in a URL of the offensive page. Um I can't fucking see the page, that's the point of this category, so how am I supposed to put in a URL for it?

So I guess as long as your page goes private so people can't find it to report it, you can put anything on Facebook, no matter how illegal/violent/cruel it is. I'm so mad right now.

I was really shocked when they replied back that they weren't taking it down. Please facebook, by all means, tell me one thing about this page that is NOT a red flag?

(*Trigger Warning*) I have reported some atrocious things on FB that is deemed okay. There was a like page called "raping babies" and it wasn't taken down. Eventually a bunch of people continuously flagged it and then it finally got taken down after a long time. There are other rape based like pages that remain up as well.

I have also reported Nazi images and those were left up. It's very disturbing what is considered to be bad on facebook and what is not.

  • I'm not at all surprised by this. Somebody posted a video of two guys setting a kitten on fire and Facebook wouldn't take it down because apparently it didn't break their rules.

Fucking Christ. That's all I have to say about that.

Wow. Just wow. If Facebook is going to have people report things then they need to take shit like that seriously. Rape and Nazi shit should not ever be acceptable no matter what. Ugh.

Right? That was actually my last straw with Facebook. I deleted my account after that. There is so much hateful, cruel, disturbing, disgusting content on Facebook that they refuse to remove and I was just done.

It sucks cuz I use Facebook to keep in touch with my cousins who are scattered all over the US and some are in other countries. But I seriously hate pretty much everything about Facebook other than that.
