F*ck the history channel!!

So last night I watched a two hour show on History called The Devil's Graveyards.
There's an area in Algeria where no animals live there, not even insects. A scientist studying why brings his dog and son to check it out and get soil samples, the dog starts acting really weird and barking and running in circles. He goes mad and attacks and kills the young boy then runs off. The dad scientist is crying recalling the account and I'm on the couch bawling. So it continues where this scientist is going to dedicate his life and studies to finding out why that happened to the dog and all other animals that enter this zone. He figures out that there is a rare aluminum isotope in the soil that causes the magnetism of the area to be off whack. It makes the compass go nuts. There are 12 of these zones across the Earth, like the Bermuda triangle and off the coast of Japan and the magnetic surges cause the things like airplane disappearances and earthquakes/ tsunamis.

So the scientist's team says that if they can send an electromagnetic pulse into the sand, it will neutralize the aluminum isotope and "cure" the magnetic issues. They have all this high power stuff trying to get enough electromagnetic power to release upon the area, and the machinery can't handle it, and it explodes and kills them all. It shows footage of the team and the explosion saying "actual footage from live web stream cams".

And that's the abrupt ending, goes right to credits with no mention of like "in memory of Dr. Joseph Spencer" or anything like that....which I find very odd. So I Google the doctor and the event and learn that the entire thing is fabricated/ dramatization of something that never happened. Ok, now before you call me gullible- the opening scene of the show said "this is a documentary which contains actual footage which may be disturbing to some viewers". How the fuck can they say that if the whole thing was fake?!??! They had me crying about a dead 8 year old that never existed- what the fuck?!?!?! Since when can the History Channel call something a "documentary with actual footage", when really it's Sci-Fi worthy and should be aired after Sharknado? I am so pissed about this!

Re: F*ck the history channel!!

  • That's so annoying. That happened to me once too, I was watching a "documentary" on one of those channels (I forget what it was) and was totally buying into all of it until the end which seemed really far-fetched and cheesey. So I did the same thing you did-- Googled it, and then got pissed. I think that's way too misleading and lame, and they're just hurting themselves by losing credibility because then when they show REAL documentaries I'm gonna just automatically call bullshit on them.

  • Um, yeah, I'd be pretty irritated.

Isn't the History Channel all, like, aliens and weird sorta sci-fi stuff in general now?

That's what my husband said. He didn't watch but he said, "I'm not surprised- that channel is Pawn Stars and Ancient Aliens".

It's kind of disappointing. I take that back, it's super disappointing to me. I'm kind of a nerd and I used to watch the History Channel all the time, and it used to have really fascinating, interesting, informative stuff. I felt like I learned a ton but it was also really fun to watch. Oh well.

  • OMG I'd be so pissed.

Stupid History Channel. You used to be awesome.

  • That reminds me of Discovery Channel's  Shark Week. They had a few fake documentaries.
  • How about that mermaid one too? Yeah, I don't know why or how a "history" channel morphed into a fiction channel.

Lol I had this co-worker who was so super nice but man she was looney. She came to work after watching that mermaid thing and was FREAKING OUT that "mermaids are real! One washed up on the beach! I saw it in a documentary!" It was pretty funny.

  • Wut. I would be so mad! How dare you fuck with my emotions like that?!!?

Right?! Like fine make up a scientist and an explosion, whatever....but to have a child viciously killed?! JC that's the part that pissed me off!

  • I love history and learning about new things, but unfortunately History Channel is no longer the place to go, just for this reason.  Have they heard of the saying that truth is stranger than fiction?  Maybe they should start sticking to the truths. . . .
I've been listening to these history podcasts while I'm working and they actually back it up with studies, primary sources, and scholarship.  I love it, but I really shouldn't have listened to their series on serial killers around Halloween.  I'm now paranoid of anyone suggesting I get life insurance, because it just seems to be a sign that they want me dead . . .

  • The history channel is awful now, ugh.

  • For real history programs you have to go to the History Channel partner channels: History Channel 2 or AHC  (American Hero's Channel).  There isn't much new programming there.  Just re-runs of the good stuff the History Channel used to run.
Anything with ghosts or aliens in the title - you are wasting your time.

  • Remember when Animal Planet did something similar with mermaids? The "mockumentary" has become a pretty big fad on channels that used to show legitimate educational programs.
  • This is so upsetting. Don't you all remember when Discovery, TLC and History channel were actually fact based? Where you would watch shows and documentaries about real things? This fabrication for the sake of viewership is so unethical. I cannot believe there isn't some standard out there that says that you have to meet XYZ criteria to call something a documentary.

I would be upset enough to cancel History channel as a result of this. But I already did that. I don't have any cable any more and a big reason for that is because of how far downhill content has gone.
