a herd of ladybugs. Ugh.

I never even noticed them come into the house. I saw one or two inside and thought nothing of it. Then, a couple weeks ago before the weather got arctic, I came around the corner and saw this strange undulating mass wedged into the corner of the door frame. I freaked out. But when I got closer I realized it was tons and tons of ladybugs, all clustered and stacked on top of each other. I asked FI if he thought we should put them outside, but added "we're supposed to get a really bad frost tonight, so I'm kind of scared that they'll all die if we put them out there."

He (the guy who hates bugs) said "Meh. Just leave em alone. They're good luck anyway." So we left them. They're still there... hibernating? Breeding?! Am I going to end up with a major infestation? Are they seriously going to just sit there in a lump all winter long? What do they even eat???

Now it's well below freezing outside and there's snow, so there's definitely no option of putting them out there. I would feel way too guilty knowing that I was dooming them to freeze and have a horrible death. So there they sit. In our house.

ETA photos, for those of you who expected puppy pictures and were disappointed. Here's some pictures of both my dogs when they were little and adorable.

  • I have no advice for you but I hate ladybugs more than spiders because they infested my house once. Ughh so nasty. I would put them outside because they should have evolved to accommodate that by now or winter is their natural death either way.

  • :( I was squeeling because I thought I might see cute puppy pictures and all I got was ladybug bullshit.

/slams door to go make another coffee.
  • Check out this info.  http://www.ladybuglady.com/infestation.htm
Looks like once they pick a house to hibernate in, they come back every year.  But they dont really cause any harm.

Well we're renting and might move away in the Spring so I'm kind of ok with that but I'm also kind of horrified.

Added some for you! I feel bad that you were disappointed lol. So there's some cuteness in the OP now.

  • Our house had them bad too this year. I vacuumed them up once they died but that's about all you can do.

I've just never seen them in a mass like that before. I keep forgetting that they're there and it grosses me out and startles me every time I see them again. I just wish I didn't feel so guilty about killing bugs cuz I kind of want them gone. Oh well.

I'm so used to them that they don't bother me. They do kind of smell weird though so I make sure to get rid of them once they die!

  • Ladybugs are so annoying.

Once I was studying in the library at my university and I kept having ladybugs crawl out of my hoodie, near my neck. I thought I was going crazy, and that people around me would think it was my fault that all of these ladybugs were crawling out of my clothes! It was so weird.

I was walking on campus once and I got hit in the eye by a ladybug, and then it fell down my shirt and started walking around on my boobs so it felt super creepy. I was flailing around and freaking out, and of course everyone around me was just staring as if I had gone completely insane.

That was the first thing I checked lol. I HATE the Japanese ones, they're really destructive. But yeah, definitely ladybugs
