New York-Hotels? Oh the choices!

Hello ladies,

So it looks like I'll be going to NYC over Christmas! I mentioned a while ago in another post that my mom had her heart set on going to a tropical destination, but she's realized NYC is much closer/doable for just a few days.

I've been there a few times and I've stayed at B&Bs and some no-frills hotels. My mom likes fancier stuff though so I'm trying to think of where we could stay that she'd like but also aren't crazy expensive!

Anyone who lives in NYC or who has visited, do you have any good recs?

  • How fancy are you talking?  That's prime tourist season so hotels will be very pricey.  What $ amount per night?

Yeah prices will get craaazy high over xmas! I think no more than $350-400ish a night. I've seen tons in the 200ish range that look fine but I figured I'd see what you guys have to say too!

  • Do you have a neighbourhood in mind?

  • I like places like The Dream, The Gansevoort, Ink 48.  Kind of boutique hotels

  • Just stayed at the Westin New York Grand Central.  Clean rooms, centrally located, under $300 per night.  I've stayed in quite a few New York hotels in that price range and that one was my favorite--about as good as it gets in my book unless you want to shell out major money for the super-top tier hotels.  Stay away from the midtown Doubletree.

I think she wants to stay in midtown, relatively close to the touristy things because she's never been. But I'm open to suggestions!

  • I went in August and we were looking for a hotel within a 5 minute walk to Grand Central Station since we took the train in from CT. I'm a freak about Trip Advisor reviews, so we ended up staying at Residence Inn (by Marriott) Midtown. It was ranked #19 out of 500 hotels and we loved it. We walked to Empire State, Rockefeller, Central Park, Times Square, etc. It was $260 a night in August which was reasonable to me, I'm sure it's a little higher at Christmas-time but probably still within your budget. One of the things that we loved was that it had a kitchen in the room, so we were able to store drinks, sandwich meat, snacks, and leftover restaurant food which is a big plus for me. Plus the free breakfast buffet was awesome! It was my husband's birthday and they put a balloon and cupcake in the room, I just can't say enough great things about that place.

  • I like the Gansevort, but that can really $$$ sometimes. Hudson Hotel's rooms are microscopic, but the hotel itself is cool and has great bars.

The Sheraton Hotel & Towers has realllllllly comfortable beds.

My preferred brand is Kimpton, they have 3 or 4? Hotels in NYC, but I've never stayed in them. But I've never had a bad Kimpton stay anywhere.

Even that is an understatement.    Our friend was the chef there and got a great deal.  It was barely the size of a closet.   The worst was the shower curtain sucked into the shower and stuck to you.    It was so gross.   Oh and no space on the sink counter to put anything.

It looked nice, but was not practical  IMO.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • We stayed in Jersey, so it was about $100 a night, but I wouldn't say it was super nice.  It was clean though, and we had room for everything.  It just wasn't high end.  But a 5 min walk to the subway right into NYC, so worked for us.

  • Thanks everyone! Will look into all these tonight!

  • I've only stayed in Manhattan a couple of times, both times at the Holiday Inn in Chinatown.
