I don't want to start a 10 page debate, I just wanted to show you guys this because I've never seen anything like it in real life. It was posted on Facebook from a Greek wedding in NYC this weekend. My best friend is Greek and its very, very common tradition for them...as you can see lol

Re: Money Dance

  • Looks like a hazard.
  • I know right? She always told me they went nuts with it, but I didn't imagine it thrown all over the floor.

  • I'm curious who has to clean it up as well. Do they get on their hands and knees and pick every dollar up? Do they get a broom and sweep it all up? I must know, now.

  • Kudos to the bride. She managed to resist doing this:

  • That's so weird. The brides in my family always had a little clutch or bag for the money. The grooms always put the money in their pocket.

Also, the money was never thrown at them. You handed it to them when it was your turn to dance with them.

(Thankfully, this tradition is finally dying out in my family, as the people in my generation think it's tacky to ask for money and boring for the guests who sit out and wait for it to end.)
  • That picture makes me feel weird.
  • I saw an episode of Four Weddings where they threw it all over the floor like that... then at the end the bride said all the money goes to the band. All the other brides were like "what the crap, that's so much money, keep it!"

  • The weddings I've been to with a money dance had the guests pinning the money to the bride's dress or to some kind of sash.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

Up here, because we have one and two dollar coins, strippers have, like, big round magnets on a stick that they use to pick up the coins without crawling around. I'm picturing that, but with like sticky paper or something.

I have never been to a wedding with any kind of money dance, thankfully. Ickickick.

  • Whenever I've seen this done at a wedding one of the wedding party holds a jar to put the money in

  • @liatris2010....pretty sure I own that exact lingerie hahahah

I'm not sure who cleans it, I've never been to one that did it! I'll ask my friend, I'm thinking maybe the groomsmen because she makes it sound like bridal party actually has things to do. I'm terrified to be in her wedding one day but she's my best friend! Also these aren't like 3rd generation Greeks, they are straight off the boat.

I definitely own that lingerie. It's from VS, lol.

I've never seen the money thrown on the floor like that.  I've seen it pinned to the B&G before, and I've seen it put in pockets/in a clutch.  I hate seeing it pinned to them though.  It just seems so tacky.

  • I can't imagine having to pick up the money much less having to dance for it. One of my friends plans to do this for her wedding and won't be talked out of it. SMH

Doesn't it hurt to have coins thrown at you?

In my area, it is actually considered rude to give coins to a stripper.  Five dollar bills or higher.  Also, if you do give a bill, how should I put this, you get a little something in the way that they grab the money from you.

Do they not play that game where, after their dance, they roll up a poster, aim it at their naked junk, and encourage everyone in perv row to toss coins into the funnel made by the poster? Which I bet does hurt, but I've seen it at every strip club I've ever been to. I admit I have generally been to pretty low-rent strip clubs though, haha.

  • I've seen this a few times before. Usually a group of guys who were a part of the money throwing will go back and scoop it all up off the floor and give it to the couple in a more orderly fashion afterwards.
  • Wow...those are some dolla dolla bills yo.

So then who gets the klassy job of scooping all the money off the floor?
Children. They pick up the money and give it to the bride and groom. They do it this way Hayastanci Armenian (Armenians from Armenian) weddings too. And probably Turkish and similar cultures in the region. Typically after the salz und dhols band brings the bride and the groom in while everyone is dancing together. They put bread on the shoulder of the bride and groom (not joking) and people throw money while everyone dances.

Our best man threw $50 in dollar bills at us during our first dance to poke fun at the Hayastanci tradition.

Really?  I've never heard of that.  Getting pelted with coins doesn't sound fun.
