It's a happy day!

So I had mentioned that I was going through this interview process for volunteering at a local animal shelter. Well, I just received a call that they would love for me to volunteer with them!

I will be helping to socialize cats and dogs, help families find the right pet for them, and will be helping with pick ups for when the shelter gets animals from other shelters. I am so excited and I can't wait! Happy day indeed!

  • Yay! Try not to adopt every single one of them ;-)

  • Happy for you! That sounds very awesome. I need to volunteer for something and stop making excuses for why I can't. FI just volunteered to help teach a class at a local community center and I'm super proud, and I also want to get off my butt and do something too!

My day has not been nearly as fun. Just work and waiting to hear back from vendors.

  • My future step daughter made me this picture yesterday and I've been smiling ever since.  Had a super fun weekend with the kids and still basking in it!

  • I volunteer at an animal shelter as well and it's so rewarding! Luckily H is the voice of reason or else I'd have 20 new furbabies by now.

  • awesome!  Have a lot of fun, it will be really rewarding!
  • H has already made me swear to him that I won't bring any animals home. I think that will definitely be my biggest challenge. @Couggal12--I am also worried about getting really attached to the animals. Unfortunately, the shelter is a kill shelter--a low kill shelter, but a kill shelter nonetheless. Any tips for this?

  • Day is going well. The weather is perfect here, and the leaves on my tree have finally started to change colors. I'm just in a good mood.
  • @sarewifenow Oh that is heartbreaking! I volunteer in a non-kill shelter so that makes it easier knowing at least they will be there until they find their new home. Are you allowed to post pictures of the adoptable pets on social media? If you can perhaps you can share lots of photos of the animals to help spread the word and get them homes. Or if they have a foster program and you could foster every once in awhile that could buy time.

  • @Couggal12--I'll have to check about the social media thing! I already have a bunch of my girlfriends who are looking to adopt tell me to keep my eyes out for them.

Yes it is heartbreaking and I know I am going to have some rough times with it, but I think it will all be worth it in the end. I will be able to give extra loving to the animals that are not going to be adopted. I just hope I don't become too attached. Thankfully, they only euthanize if the animal has been in the shelter for a long time or if they are too sick and the quality of life would be bad.

  • That's awesome! I used to volunteer at a shelter in university and I've been meaning to do it again. But I feel like I wouldn't have the will power to not take any pets home!
