MUA-HS norms

So I am starting to think and look for a MUA-HS for the big day. what is a good price to get for both services? are trials usually included? other than pictures of their work, what should I look for in this person?

thanks in advance!

Re: MUA-HS norms

  • The price depends on your area, the type of style you want, and whether you want it done on site or in a salon. Some stylists include the trials in the price, others price it separately - so make sure you're clear on what the fee includes. I think your best bet is to determine how much you're willing to spend on hair and makeup, and then find stylists in your budget.

This. It is really hard to give a hard number because we are most likely in different areas.

I will say that every trial I had, I paid for. I didn't find any place that did a free trial so I think that is pretty much the norm when in comes to that.

Both of these lol. I know of a make-up artist in Chicago who charges a minimum of $500. I also know if a make-up artist in a nearby city who charges $30.

Most places I come across charge separately for a trial, so that seems pretty normal. If you contact a service that has multiple employees (like a salon) make sure the person doing your trial is the same person that would do your hair/make-up the day of. Sometimes shit happens and stuff gets switched around, and you end up with a different person who then does a crappy job. This happened to a friend of mine.

  • Thanks for the advice. I know it varies from area to area. I got a quote fro $275 for the day of make up and $50 per trial. I thought that was  little on the high end. I really like this girl so I just wanted to ask around. I just sent several emails to get a feel for other prices around here.

Is there anything in particular I should ask them other that pictures of their work?

  • Where are you located? You may get more help on your local board.

My trial was $60 and the wedding day would normally be $75. I live in NC.

  • @emmaaa I am from Puerto Rico, we dont have a local board sadly :/

    Ah! Sorry!

$275 for hair sounds like a lot to me but prices in places like NYC and LA are always higher so maybe that's how it is in Puerto Rico.

  • I think you're doing the smart thing by checking around for prices. We found a DJ we liked and then found out their "basic package" started at $1,600. When I checked with other DJs in the area, they all ranged from $500 to $800. Sometimes that's the best way to get a good feel for what you should be paying. And for the record, the super expensive DJ did not even seem worth the price. Not by a long shot. So I was really glad we didn't hire them.

On the flip side, we paid a little more than the average price for our photographer, because he has such an awesome reputation and came highly recommended, and to me, a photographer is worth the extra money. A make-up artist may be worth paying a little bit extra if you really like her style, and if the trial is awesome.

  • I would check around. If she's not in super-high demand, you may even be able to negotiate based on other quotes you get - "I really love your work, but have gotten quotes from several other people for around $200. Could we meet in the middle at $225?" or something like that.

FWIW mine was $70 for hair, $60 for makeup or $120 for both (plus $10 if you wanted false lashes). My trial was $100.

  • I contacted some other MUA and so far 1 has replied at $200 with free trial. She said she might be able to work out a package if several people get on board. So I will ask if anyone is interested. if not it would be my mom and me.

I am going to contact the 1st girl again and se if I can negotiate if anyone else gets on board. I had really liked her work a ton. The other one is pretty good too.
