J Crew Quality

So I recently started shopping at J Crew. I had heard that their clothes are pricey and hate trying on clothes at new stores so I just always skipped them at the mall. I finally went in a couple weeks ago when they had a 40% off clearance sale for the first time and discovered that I love their clothes. I am wearing one of the shirts I bought at work today (a 3/4 sleeve t shirt with a design on the front) and I noticed that there are 2 holes in it so I am going to have to throw it away after wearing it once. Can anyone comment on the quality of their J Crew clothes? They are having a sale online now so I was going to direct some family members there for Christmas gifts but I am not sure now since I need them to at least last the season because they cost more than what I am used to spending.

Re: J Crew Quality

  • I got a pair of $97 moto-style khakis off their clearance rack for $7 in 2011 and they are still my favorite pants. Not really showing any signs of wear, and have stayed in good shape for the time that I've had them.

  • I've never had quality issues with J Crew. They're one of my favorites.

Can you not return the shirt you bought? If it's only been a couple of weeks, it's worth a shot.

True, I was planning on going there today before I saw the holes, so I most likely will ask if I can just have my money back so I can trash it, it was final sale though so I don't know. If not it was only $15 so not that big of a deal but I just wanted to make sure it is not an overall issue with the brand so I can feel comfortable spending more $$ there.
  • You should be able to take it back and maybe exchange it for another shirt.  In my experience, JCrew has excellent customer service.

Their quality is very good.  I haven't ever had any issues.

  • If you still have the receipt then just bring the shirt back. Usually even if it's worn they will make a customer accommodation. I had to do that will an Express sweater (it looked like it had moth holes, since they weren't on any seems or anything) and I got a full refund.

    Just be nice!
  • The quality is generally good, but watch out for "distressed" stuff like t-shirts. Sometimes they disintegrate faster.

Also, I have found that the J.Crew Factory clothes are of MUCH lower quality, although they're still cute. Just a buyer beware!

  • Thanks everyone! It sounds like your experiences have been good I think I'll give them another shot :-)
  • Yeah. Just avoid the J Crew Factory specific stuff. It's not quite the same.

And try everything on, because I swear their sizes expand every couple months.

  • JCrew used to be my go-to store for work clothes, but I'm weaning myself off.  For the clothes I've bought, quality has degraded significantly over the past year or so.  The wool pencil skirt is still awesome, though.  I bought some silk blouses about a year ago that starting ripping after only wearing them a couple of times (returned without any issues).

I bought the 3" chino shorts summer of 2011 and they were very sturdy.  I bought supposedly the same item in a different color this past summer and there was no more reinforced waist and the material was much flimsier.

It's really hit or miss.  I think the bathing suits are really high quality, shoes so-so.  I will still buy the cashmere sweaters but it's not the thick high quality cashmere that lasts for years.  As other people have noted you can easily return things, so it's no biggie if you're not satisfied.  I like being able to order online and then return in the store.

  • I haven't ever had issues with J. Crew quality.
  • I've never had problems with J Crew either. Also I'm not sure if this will matter to you or anyone in your life but make sure they ask for military/student discount. It's 10-20% off, so not a big amount but still nice!

  • I haven't ever had issue with the J.Crew quality. In fact, my favorite pair of black leather riding boots came from J.Crew. I had those babies for almost 7 years before the original sole was worn out. I would still be wearing them too if my feet didn't get wet when it rained outside :) Still, can't complain about a ~7 year run.

  • I've never had any quality issues with the exception of a t-shirt I bought there. I've bought several suites, chino shorts, sweaters and blouses, and all have held up for years. The one t-shirt I bought there got several holes in it after wearing for a few months.
