New Fur Baby!

We got a new fur baby yesterday.  He's afrikkendorable. His name is Comet and he's a year old.

We've never had 2 cats before and we were told to keep them separate for a couple days, so the second picture is resident kitty and Comet having a staring contest. FI is home with them today.  The door doesn't latch properly, and they've figured that out so there has been a lot of hissing and screeching, but no one is attacking so that's a good sign.

I'm a little nervous about them hating each other, but FI just told me he decided not to even shut the door and just let it happen, and apparently so far so good. I'll separate them tonight again.

Just wanted to show off my new fur baby :)

Re: New Fur Baby!

  • Congrats!

We have four and when we joined the first two, we didn't separate them for very long. They still hate each other tremendously. We separated the next two for about a week and for the most part, they all get along.

  • Adorable! We also just got a second cat yesterday! She was a stray that we started feeding, and after getting the clear from the vet, we finally got to bring her inside yesterday. We have them separated and have been doing short pockets of introduction. So far mostly hissing, but H just texted me to say they did bump their heads against each other today. Progress!
  • Yay kitties! Very cute. I hope they learn to be cuddle buddies soon!

  • Congrats on  your new furbaby. Hope the boss accepts Comet quickly.

  • I hope you guys can see the pictures cause I can't tell if they're still there.  FI just told me he separated them again because our resident kitty keeps hissing, swatting and has an arched back... and Comet just peed on the carpet :(
  • THIS is a miracle cleaner for urine, gets rid of it so they don't pee in the same spot again (hopefully).

You can also get some pheromone spray called Feliway to help!

Oh thank you! I'll get some.  Fellow cat owners: Have you heard bad things about Blue Buffalo cat food? I've heard it causes urine crystals in male cats.  My girlfriend told me to pick up the Costco brand.(ETA) So is that better for them?

They're there, but I think they're backwards -- the first one I see is the staring contest through the door. They're both adorable, though!!

I'd definitely keep them separated. Poor Comet's probably scared to death. :(

My girls have lived together for years and they're definitely frenemies. I always hope they're going to be buddies someday, but so far after three years the farthest we've gotten is passive aggressive chase-playing.

I have not heard anything bad, but by way of anecdote, I had a male cat that I fed Blue Buffalo, and I had to put him down because he developed really bad cystitis. I don't know if his diet was necessarily the cause, however, as he had some other health issues.

I have read increasing the amount of water the cat consumes helps avoid cystitis/crystal issues. Canned food is 80% water, so I try to give my cat can food at least a few times a week just to up his water consumption. There was also a study done with cats who had blockages and were separated into two groups- one who got Urinary S/O diet canned food and one who got the same food but the dry version. In the group that got the wet food, none of the cats had subsequent urinary issues during the study, but there was some recurrences in the dry food group.

  • I used to feed my cat Blue Buffalo but stopped because I had heard this as well. I also heard you have to be careful with the Blue Buffalo dog food because some of it can have too much protein in it, which can be bad if they're not super active (like sled-dog active). We feed the dog and the cat Acana brand food now. They love it and are both very healthy. Dog is a 6-year-old Swiss Mountain Dog, which is close to the max life span of large breeds, but he still acts like a puppy and the vet says the food helps, so I assume it's good for the cat as well.

THIS is what we give the cat. It's about the same price as Blue Buffalo and I usually have the place that we get the dog food special order it a few days out. A lot of places don't keep higher end cat food stocked, but can get it easily.

  • Yay kitty!

I've had my female for 3 years now and just over a year ago we got her a brother.

    They absolutely hate each other.

  • So adorable!  Good luck with integrating the kitties-- more separation sounds like a good idea for now.  We're lucky that we adopted our two together and they have been super bonded since they were kittens.  I'd love to get a third cat one day just because I really want to rescue another one, but I think Jack and Stella would just freeze out the third wheel.
