Pinterest/ recipe fails

Have any failures lately?

I tried THESE on Thanksgiving morning and it was a disaster. Here's a picture for those who can't click the link (cucumber roll with avocado spread). The sauce wouldn't spread because the cucumber is mostly water so the spread just like clumped up. The cucumber rolled about half as many times as the picture shows, because any tighter would have broken it in half. They immediately unrolled themselves. I should have taken a damn picture before I threw the whole plate in the garbage.

Re: Pinterest/ recipe fails

  • Fortunately, none recently.

I just got a Pinterest account, but I started a separate board for recipe successes, so I know which ones to make again. When I have a terrible recipe, I plan on creating a recipe fail board so I know which ones to not make again, rather than just deleting the pin and repeating the history.

Next time, line a colander with paper towels. But a big bowl underneath it. Lay the cucumber slices on the paper towels. Let the water drain out of them over night in the fridge.

    ETA: "in the fridge."

  • The slices really wanted to snap when bent...I feel like that would be even worse after drying them out.

  • I don't have a recent fail....although I try at least once a year to make Oreo Truffles and always fail.  How do you get them to be so rounded and then get the chocolate to go around them without completely making them look like a foreign object?!?!   They taste amazing - but look...just...wrong.

I wanted to share my most favorite pinterest find - these are amazing and so easy to make.(They're on my Pinterest success board)

  • @laker2014 I think oreo balls are so easy. Form into balls then put on a cookie sheet and freeze for 1-2 hours before you do the chocolate dip part. I use a spoon to completely submerge it in the chocolate, roll it around a little, and lift out. The bottoms do end up flat though.

  • OMG those "overnight oatmeal" mason jar things with yogurt and oats. Looked like refrigerated baby barf and tasted even worse. God-awful terrible.

When I make truffles or cake balls I roll as round as I can, then freeze, then roll again in my hands before dipping. Perfectly round and lovely.

I would try salting the cucumber slices to draw out some moisture if you try those roll things again. Same as with eggplant - lay on paper towels, sprinkle a little salt, let sit for a few minutes, blot off the water, flip over and repeat.

I tried to make these for my Halloween party and the peeps wouldn't stand up straight so they ended up just lying backdown on the brownies and it looked kind of weird. No one ate them either :-|

  • @jenna8984, were you using regular cucumbers? I could be wrong but it looks like those wraps might have been made with English cucumbers (the kind that are long and individually wrapped in plastic usually). I think they might work better, but I'd definitely recommend blotting the water off with a towel to get the spread to stick. They look delicious, I might have to try them! (And then post my fail on here because I was wrong)

  • I haven't had any recipe fails recently. My last big fiasco in the kitchen was quite a few years ago. I was making pallela and I severly undercooked the rice. People were crunching on it at my dinner party. I have since perfected it. Thank Jesus.

  • Did you cut them with a knife or do you have a mandolin?

We have a mandolin but the thinnest setting is not *super* thin.
@charlieyankee03 Maybe....I didn't know there were different kinds of cucumbers!

  • This isn't recent, but it's my only Pinterest fail. I tried making beer chicken in the crock pot. It wasn't horrible, it just wasn't very good, either. A waste of a good beer, that's for sure!

  • Made a cheeseburger soup--sounded like something manly for hubby to eat. It was so gross! Next time, I'll open a can of Amy's soup. :(
  • Latest Pinterest fail was a mac and cheese recipe, but it was my fault for burning the milk...

Latest Pinterest win was this: http://www.halfbakedharvest.com/kale-wild-rice-casserole/

So delicious! I might try it with half light mozzarella, half gruyere next time because with all gruyere it was a bit rich.

  • My only Pinterest fail: Creamy Avocado Pasta (link)

It's my own fault for not following the instructions properly though. Instead of 2 tablespoons of freshly squeezed lemon juice I think I used two tablespoons (maybe more) of lemon juice concentrate. Oh god...it was so awful and bitter and not even tasty lemony. I couldn't even finish it and I had to toss the entire recipe.

  • Orange chicken in the crock pot. It was awful.
  • @lapeanut1018 You NEED to try it again with real lemon because that's actually my favorite recipe!!

  • @jenna8984 I might be scarred forever from it! I've had so many successes and that one was just one giant bowl of noodle fail. It was so sad. I'm afraid to make it again, it was that bad and I LOVE avocado everything.

  • To be honest, I don't trust pinterest recipes! I'm totally jaded by the pintester though (check her out!), where she fails at almost everything. Alot of it is user error haha.

If I'm ever in the mood for something, I just google bobbly flay recipes. He's like my food husband, he doesn't let me down!

  • It wasn't a Pinterest fail, but my most recent kitchen fail was trying to make mayo.  Emulsifications are HARD!

It was an expensive fail too because I used avocado oil for the oil part of it and the bottle cost me about 10 bucks!

I'm going to try again, but I'm not sure when.
  • Ugh, not recently, but when DH and I were doing long distance I made him carrot cake muffins (this recipe, I think-- http://www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/cream-cheese-carrot-muffins). I bought a cute little cupcake storage container and took them with me from LA to Chicago........ They were DISGUSTING. DH had one bite and tried to be polite before he finally asked me if he could throw them away.

Whenever I talk about wanting to make something on pinterest, DH always references this fail. I still have no idea what I did wrong. I was so positive all my ingredients/amounts were correct. The only thing I could think of was that the airplane cabin pressure sucked out all of the deliciousness from my cupcakes.

It's alot easier if you have a) 2 people doing it (if manual) or b) food processor. I have tried to do it manually and it never works =(

  • The day my springform pan leaked cake batter all over the inside of my oven. I cried.

I don't trust anything that's been uploaded to Pinterest/only has instructions in the comments, because who knows how badly it's been bastardized. But if something links through to a site or blog with legit instructions the way it's supposed to, I don't see any reason to be wary. Pinterest is just a cataloging method.

  • I've never made anything from pinterest.   But I get a good chuckle out of all the Pinterest fail pictures floating around.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

Do you have an immersion blender? I make mayo with avocado oil quite often. I use my immersion blender, and I've yet to have my mayo fail.

  • I actually have yet to have a fail! I wouldn't use the thumbprint cookie recipe I just made again because it was a little too dry and crumbly, but they were far from a failure, so that was lucky. I do go through my pins and weed them periodically so I keep the best version of whatever.

It does get a little frustrating when you see that there are like a dozen different ways to make your own vanilla extract and they all have wee variations. And it's true that popularity might mean nothing, because all those pins might be from people who haven't tried it yet! I try to look at the comments and reviews on the original source site for reassurance.

FYI - Nigella's Guinness Chocolate Cake is the BEST damn chocolate cake I've ever had in my life.
