Form-fitting dress worry (picture included)

Here is me in my dress. I really love it, and in this picture I'm actually smiling ear-to-ear. I don't exactly have dress regret, but I definitely have body regret. I'm working on the diet and exercise thing, and I do still have several months to go before the big day, but when I look at pictures of myself in the dress shop, my eyes go right to that little belly bulge, and it really makes me nervous that I picked the wrong fabric and dress shape.

Is this something that will be fixed when I go for my fitting? I hope to lose a little weight by then and also plan to invest in a great pair of spanx. I just always feel like when I look at pictures of other brides in their dresses, they have no trace of a bump whatsoever. Is this some magic of the seamstress or is everyone in flawless shape? Thank you!!

  • Beautiful dress!  And you have an amazing figure and the dress highlights that so well.

A nice pair of spanx will smooth that tiny tiny area out.  So don't stress.  And honestly I find with dresses like yours that have a plain smooth satin area around the lower belly A LOT of people no matter their shape or size would have the same issue.  Since that area is plain it will just more easily show things then if it were covered in lace or ruching or sparkles, KWIM?

  • Maggie's right. You're body is great & the dress is great on your body. A good pair of Spanx with smooth you out and make the fabric less harsh on your midsection.

  • Thanks guys... I can't believe I just asked the internet if my dress made me look fat. But thank you all so much. Looking into waist cinchers now. :)

You look bangin'!!! I used one of those corsets from David's Bridal and it sucked in my belly spectacularly. And also helped hold my dress up. I bought it at the very last minute, originally thinking I didn't need anything, but it totally made a world of difference. (In my head anyway. No one else would have probably noticed a difference. But that's how we are sometimes I guess.)
  • Girl's got curves! Show them off! Seriously... gorgeous! Keep on smiling!
  • If you're not happy, see what a dietician/trainer can help you with to the finish line. 100 people could tell you it's fine, but you're worried about it so you're going to scrutinize the pics. Let's just be real. So do everything you can--let the professional assess if you're eating to much salt or you just need different exercises to bust through your plateau. And I love Spanx. I wore them when I was size 2 just to keep everything in the right place and because I felt better in them.
  • Seriously, I'm not seeing any belly bulge. Like... none. Your dress is beautiful and your figure looks amazing with the shape of the dress and the way it fits you! I respect the fact that you want to exercise and get in better shape but quit being so hard on yourself!

  • The dress is gorgeous and so are you.  I would not have looked at that area if you had not pointed it out to me.  Obviously, do your healthy eating and exercising and stuff like that.  But I would not feel any body regret whatsoever, gorgeous!  :)
  • I had the same worries that you did. I actually stood sideways in front of the mirror and cried to my maid of honor that you could see my belly when I did that. She was like "then don't stand sideways in front of people!" LOL I realized I was being paranoid, but I bought some spanx and it smoothed me out enough so that I felt better about it.

  • You look great & trust me a pair of spanx will take care of that little issue if you haven't already done so on your own. I knew a bride that thanks to spanx when from being more of a pear to an hour glass on her wedding day thanks to spanx.

  • My eyes went right to your boobs!

But seriously, that is tiny and a pair of spanx will work wonders.

OMG too funny. I hope I don't look like I'm fishing for compliments; I really do have worries but you lovely ladies really put me at ease.

    happy Friday everyone!

  • I agree with all of the other women suggesting shapewear, but I didn't even notice this "belly bulge" you're talking about!! I first noticed how beautiful the lace is on the bodice and the amazing details around the bottom of your dress. I totally understand feeling self conscious about the tummy area in your wedding dress because I am too, but just keep in mind how truly beautiful you look in it!

  • You look great!!  Get some spanx if you feel self conscious.  Or maybe do some belly wraps.

  • You are a victim of fashion photography and anorexic models.

You look great. Even if you didn't wear spanx you look fine. You are a human, not a plank. I don't even think you need to lose weight, but if you insist, no more than 5 pounds.

  • I have the same problem. Personally I wouldn't try to diet at all (I really don't believe in diets), but just make sure I lay off the salt, alcohol, and excessive carbs for just 2-3 days before your big day. To me, those make the real different in stomach bloat. I agree with everyone, you look great!!

Curious. How do you not believe in diets? Isnt laying off carbs for a few days a diet?

  • You look amazing! Such a gorgeous dress on you! That spot is what every girl has I swear no matter what her size especially in plain satin. Seriously - spanx are amazing and I bet even Gisele has a pair ;) they just smooth everything out so you don't need to stress about any body insecurity at all and can eat and drink freely on your wedding day :)

  • You look gorgeous exactly as you are in that dress! I agree with previous posters that we have skewed ideas of what real human beings look like in dresses due to photoshop and plank-stomached models. I experienced similar concerns looking at cell phone pictures of myself in wedding dresses, so I absolutely understand where you're coming from. When I asked the people that came to the bridal fittings with me about my concerns, they didn't even notice the issue in person. I think we have become socially conditioned to pick apart every single thing about ourselves in pictures, and I think that's what caused me to have similar feelings. But as a completely impartial outsider, I can tell you without a doubt that you look beautiful in the dress and I had to read your text to even see what you were concerned about.

I do not think you need to change anything about your body. However, if you feel concerned, I think there are some tricks I've used in the past to make my stomach look flatter when I was concerned about it. I have worn spanks. I like to go up a size so I don't feel squished and it just smooths. Sometimes that extra layer of fabric can cover the belly button shadow that sometimes shows up in smooth clothing. Other times I feel like spanx just adds extra material and bulk where I don't want it, so try it out for yourself.  Certain exercise that really works the core will often tighten up my stomach: pilates and lap swimming especially.

I hope you'll share your wedding pictures when your wedding occurs. You look beautiful in your dress so I imagine professional pictures are going to be stunning.
  • Absolutely not noticeable!  Seriously.

Also, thank you for this amazing post because now I know about waist cinchers!  I mean, I have spanx, but...the more you know!
