Pricing for engagement photos

How much does an average engagement photo shoot cost in the Portland area?  A coworker of mine does photographer as a hobby, and I'd like her to do it, and she suggested $200 as a price.  I've been looking at wedding day photographers, and I know those  cost way way way more, but I can't really tell if this is reasonable for just the engagement pictures.

I think $200 sounds like a great deal if you like her work, especially if she'll give you the rights to the pictures. Think senior picture pricing for engagement photos. Check with the professional photographers you like as well though, most have a few packages that will include an engagement session.

We used Bryan Rupp for our actual wedding and for a maternity session.  Our maternity session was around 1.5 hours and we got the full res DVD with the right to all of our pics (approx 65) for $275.  I believe he charges about the same for engagement sessions.  His work is fantastic and I highly recommend him.  His website and blog are on: www.bryanruppphotograhpy.com. I personally wouldn't want to pay $200 to someone that just does it as a hobby.

I paid $325 for my 1 hr engagement session. I got rights to 75 finished images. So I think $200 sounds reasonable if you get the rights to the photos.

Bryan Rupp's wife was in my major at George Fox, we just graduated together this past Spring. Their work is really beautiful. I also really love Alyssa Jul's portfolio. She is very modern and chic! I would be leery to pay someone who wasn't a professional for my ceremony photos but engagement, maybe. I'm trying to find a package which has the E-photos included and problem solved!
