Intolerances/allergies help

I've always known I've had a dairy intolerance. Milk and anything creamy will have me doubling over in pain if I have more than two spoonfuls. Over the past 6 months I have come to find the other culprit to my GI issues: wheat (possibly also all kinds of gluten proteins, but definitely wheat flour). I have been good, mostly, the past few months on really limiting both and I've been doing a hella lot better. But, over my birthday in early November, I had a "Gluten Day" and totally overdid it (Parisian Brunch, OMG); I was sick for a week.

Currently, I have not told my vendors. Wedding is March, will have the catering tasting next month. I have no idea when I should tell him. It's going to be at a nice hotel, so I know they can accommodate. Do I wait for the tasting? I can have a few bites and be okay, but a full on meal will have me going. Fi will be there and doesn't have any stomach issues so obviously he will try it all.

We already got the cake and I figure I will have my bite for the photos and I will buy myself a little GF cupcake (LOVE the ones from Trader Joes).

I wish I could take a pill and it would be fine. I just want a normal stomach. (/pityparty)

Re: Intolerances/allergies help

  • We didn't eat a full meal of anything at my tasting. They gave us each 1 portion of each appetizer (H's grandparents went with us) and then 1 of each entree for the table to share bites of.

If I were you, I'd say that you want one of your entree choices to be GF/DF and have them prepare it that way for your tasting. That way you know you'll love the meal that you get, and it's two less dietary requirements to ask people for in their responses.

We had a few apps that were naturally GF and/or DF, our chicken was easily made GF upon request, salmon was already GF and easily made DF upon request, and thankfully our vegetarians didn't need either of those because it was a strudel, lol.

  • lolo883; let them know before the tasting so you can at least try something that meets your dietary requirements. I can totally sympathize with you; my stomach is weird and there's certain things I can't eat at all. It's much better to give them a heads up and make sure your stomach isn't at risk of getting upset. It's not fun when that happens.

  • Tell them before the tasting so they can make things that you can tolerate.

  • Ditto PPs to tell them before the tasting. I got a full meal for me and my mom at the tasting, so 2 salads, 2 different entrees and 2 different desserts. I had one GF guest and they were easily able to accommodate this - garden salad instead of Caesar, no sauce on the entree, fresh fruit for dessert.

This.  Go to a GI doc and see if you have Celiac's disease.

Yes, this. Eliminating food groups from your diet without actually consulting with a doctor could do you more harm than good.

I do agree it's smart to talk to a doctor about food problems, but yeah some things are pretty basic. Milk makes me want to shit my pants. I told my doctor that. She said "stop drinking milk".

Plus, there's nothing in OP's post to suggest she hasn't seen a doctor about her problems.

Edit to add: I'm dumb. You asked OP about the doctor thing. Nevermind!
  • Definitely tell them before the tasting! they gave us the fully meal when we did ours and they started cooking our meal the moment we arrived. They might not wait for you to meet with them and tell them about your intolerances to start cooking the food for your tasting.

  • Thank you everyone!

And yes, after many tests, endoscopy/colonoscopy, I sat with a doctor and did an elimination diet with a journal. I'm fine with soy, corn, eggs. I definitely have IBS but try to treat it with what I eat instead of pills. A low FODMAP diet helps me best, but I also think that can help anyone with even the slightest stomach problems.  (Dad did some damage to himself overusing meds for his IBS and heartburn. Didn't help the h. pilori bug from infecting his stomach lining and giving him stage 4 stomach cancer. Needless to say, I'd rather treat it naturally.)

lc07 put it, when I was in high school and figured out I had a lactose problem, it was because I had started working at an ice cream parlor and was coming home with terrible stomach pains. At the time I didn't put two and two together, I went to the doctor and he asked what was new and my mom figured it out. Diagnosis: stop eating the ice cream. It worked. (Though I still have a soft spot for Coldstone's Cheesecake icecream with fresh strawberries.)

I'm not saying I have Celiac or an allergy; that would be self diagnosis. I have IBS and certain foods cannot digest as well as others. My sister is a pediatric nutritionist and I would be hearing shit all day from her if I self diagnosed.

Good! I'm glad that you have taken the necessary steps. I have a similar story to yours. I just hate when people could have options, but they've self diagnosed so won't hear anything else...  then they complain about not being able to eat X. That's not you :)
