FI's grandpa fell of his roof yesterday and broke his back and fractured it in two places. The doctors hope that a brace will be sufficient for the break but will know more today. If they think the brace won't work, then they will be doing surgery tomorrow or Thursday.

So, why was Grandpa on the roof? This 87 year old man is a badass. Grandma asked him where he was going and he told her he was going to clean up the garage. Well he hustled out and got on the roof to blow the leaves. He REALLY REALLY shouldn't do this and FI offers to help all of the time, but he hates feel incapable.

He has had mini strokes in the past and they think he suffered a mini stroke while on the roof, causing the fall.

Please keep FI and his family in your thoughts and prayers as the healing process begins. Thank you!

  • T&P for your FI's Grandpa!!!

I understand badass, independent older people. My great-grandma's kids sold her car because they said she was too old to be driving. She contacted someone selling a car in the newspaper the next day and bought it, and had them bring it to her.

  • Oh my gosh! I hope he's OK!

My grandma is 92. A few years ago we had to take her ladders away. She was getting up there to clean out her gutters!

@theycallmelinz My Mommaw did this. My uncle technically owned the car she drove so he took her keys but left the car so it looked like someone was home. She was pissed. The next day she called a dealership, had them pick her up, and take her to the dealership to test drive the car she wanted and then she bought it.

  • Oh yikes!! Prayers and healing thoughts to him!
  • Thoughts and prayers.

  • lots of T&P your way! Hope everything turns out for the best

  • Thoughts and prayers! Maybe a vertebroplasty (not surgery, just injecting concrete between the vertebrae) will be the kind of treatment they recommend if the brace isn't working. What a lucky man to not have more damage! I pray he will be up running around on the ground floor again real soon :)

  • Praying for your rascally grandfather. I hope the brace is sufficient.

My parents are in their 80s and still go to 'the club' three times a week, my MIL is 99 and I work with elderly, home bound people. I know all about feisty, determined elders. God bless them all.

  • Good vibes to badass grampa!

@Sugargirl1019 I should have mentioned that when he fell, he fell on the rock wall by the house. so it definitely could have been worse. He is SO lucky that these are is only injuries!

  • Sending positive thoughts.
  • Oh, no I'm so sorry to hear this! I hope he recovers really quickly and goes back to being his feisty bad ass self - on the ground this time!

And I hope he stays off of the roof now! ><

  • Thoughts and prayers!

My 81 year old grandfather climbed a tree the other day to cut down a branch.  Although he was at risk of falling, I think my Mom and I were more at risk for having a heart attack watching it.

  • Oh no!  Thoughts and prayers to you, Fi, and family.  But this badass grandpa sounds like a fun patient at least ;)

Thoughts and prayers OP! Hoping for a speedy recovery.

@theycallmelinz That sounds illegal unless they have a Power of Attorney for her.

I'm sure they did, because she was in her late 80s and was experiencing other health-related issues

My 89 year-old grandma kayaks around the lake she lives on. Like all the way around the whole lake. I hope I'm like your grandpa and my grandma when I'm their age! But also I hope your grandpa and my grandma stay safe in their adventures!

  • Thank you everyone. I greatly appreciate it!

By the time we got home for work yesterday, Grandpa was tired and going to sleep (he's still at the hospital) so Grandma and FMIL didn't think we should come to the hospital though they did say he was cracking jokes and in good spirits. As of last night, they still were not sure if he needed the surgery and were hoping the brace would suffice but were waiting on the opinion of a specialist.

FI just called and said that they are doing surgery in a few hours so he left work to go see his grandpa before he goes in for surgery. The surgery itself will last 4 hours  but FI did not have information on the recovery process.

  • I hope the surgery goes well. Sending lots of good thoughts your way.
  • I'll be thinking about your FI's grandpa this morning. I hope his surgery goes well.
