Talk to me about waxing

Re: Talk to me about waxing

  • I sugar my own bikini line.  I find it hurts less than getting it done professionally cos they all use wax.  Sugaring hurts less.  I do it every 2-3 weeks cos I've got lots of hair I guess.  DH doesn't care about Brazilians, so I've never got one.  I think he finds it a little weird cos if you get it all off he thinks you look pre-pubescent.  But he'd be oil if I got one anyway, but since he doesn't care and I have no desire to do it, I don't.

Don't put lotion on before you go.  It makes your hair slippery and the wax won't stick to it well.  Yes, different time on you period will make it hurt more or less.  I do min right after a hot shower so it seems less painful in my mind.  Good luck

  • Welp, it's over now. Except for 2 strips, it didn't hurt nearly as bad as I expected (despite being the week before my period) so hopefully it won't be sore for very long?

Also, for you ladies who wax on the reg, what's the best product for preventing ingrowns? The receptionist gave me the hard sell on their products but I didn't want to drop $50 on it without researching first.

  • Why wax if my husband's opinion is irrelevant?

Honestly, I get waxed 2-3 times a year, typically because I'm going to the beach. I also did it for my wedding because I knew I was going to be changing in front of people. I also typically shave my legs once every couple of months, and my pits every week or every other week (more often in the summer. It's either for my own personal preference, or it's because I've decided I want my legs to be smooth.

  • I used to get waxes all the time.  However, I can't really afford it again until I get my promotion in January.

Tips: exfoliate with a strong scrub the night before, and then apply body oil liberally (it softens the hair follicles).  About an hour before either take 3 Advil or have a few strong drinks.

    You'll be fine!  Good luck!
  • I am more confused now. hahaha I was considering this for the wedding but I am kind of a wimp with these things. I will definitely do some research. and WTH is sugaring?

I'm on mobile but i linked the one I use on the first page. It's like a roll on deodorant and definitely helps. Lasts forever too. Plum genius or something.

  • Anyone else just let their hair grow? I'll wax my vaginal zone when men I sleep with start turning up with bald balls. Actually no. Then I will start finding less weird men.
This would be my FI's dream.  I'm not into having the Amazon Jungle on my hoo-ha, so I keep it trimmed, but that man would love a big ol' bush!

@blabla89 Have you been waxed elsewhere?  I tried having my eyebrows waxed, but I had a horrible reaction to it.  I would have hated to have had that reaction down there!

  • I get a Brazilian every month or so. The packages at European wax center make it more affordable. The first time hurts but you get used to it. Sounds silly but I chew gum while I have it done. It distracts me. I pull my knees to my chest. Idk if I could handle getting on all 4s in front of a stranger. I bought the ingrown hair serum for EWC. I use it the day I get waxed and the day after. No ingrowns thus far.

I have a full bush for the first time in six years and I looove it.

    TMI?

  • Serious Serum is the best one I have ever used.

  • I have gotten two bikini waxes.  One a few months before our wedding and one a few days before.  I did like the results because they lasted awhile.  However, they did hurt, and I just don't want to drop that much money on it (and it wasn't that much where I went compared to what some of you spend, $30 I think.)

I don't think I could ever get a Brazilian.  The bikini wax hurt enough.  I've also gotten a leg wax once, and my shins actually hurt more than the bikini!

Lately, I haven't done anything to my bikini area.  I haven't done anything in about a year, actually.  I haven't gone swimming much lately.  A couple times to a hot springs, but I wore shorts over my suit.  I do trim.  H likes it better when I trim, it's easier to keep clean, and (TMI) it can be a bit itchy when it gets long.

Before, when I was trying to keep up with my bikini line, I would pluck two or three hairs a day to keep up with keeping the edges neat. I need to get back into doing that.  I can't shave or I get terrible ingrown hairs and red bumps no matter what I do to try to avoid them.

I've been shaving my legs once a month or so.  I shave my arm pits about every other day.  I can't imagine how much waxing pits would hurt!
  • I used to shave it all. Then I met H and he (oddly) expressed a preference for hair.

I like it so much better to have hair- I get the outsides waxed and I keep the hair neatly trimmed (I do that by just lightly passing a razor over it).

I used to get horrible razor burn from shaving- waxing is infinitely better. I only pay $23- it takes 10 minutes, once every 6 weeks or so. You do have to grow it out in between, which is fine for the winter, but I have had to resort to some quick shaves before going to the beach when I was in between waxings.

  • @lurkergirl I used to get my eyebrows waxed but I had a few bad experiences so I switched to threading. It's more precise and less painful than waxing...but unfortunately it's not an option for my hoo-ha :)

Ha! I always think silently in my subconscious about threading way down there too.

As many PPs said, it hurts the first time, but not even in the horrible unimaginable way you are probably thinking about it right now. I got my first one about 2 months ago, and I was so so so nervous about it. In the end, it wasn't really such a big deal - although I did feel a bit uncomfortable for the first 30 seconds with the waxer all up in my lady zone. The pain was there but managable and now I am going once a month. It is really much smoother and grows back much finer than when shaving.

I don't think it's "odd" to have a preference for hair.

DH doesn't like it completely bare at all. He thinks the "all bare" look is "odd" because it makes grown women look like children from the waist down. Many of his friends have that preference and he finds it really strange. I used to wax it all and I know that's not the end goal, but I can see what he means.

  • I use Witch Hazel for ingrown hairs when I shave my bikini area and it works great.

Now I'm think about getting a wax before the wedding,

I'm sorry. I can't believe so many people actually subject themselves to that. All the pain, irritation, ingrowns, and spending $100 on it? Hell to the no over here. I shave about once a week (that region) and it takes 3 minutes and no irritation. And even if I get lazy and skip a week DH couldn't care less.

Some people's hair patterns and textures are different. I have a cow lick on my labia and I could never get all the hair off with shaving and waxing takes care of it. I definitely don't spend 100 on my waxes; I go to one of the best places in the city and it's 55 before tip. H doesn't care if I skip a month getting waxed; I am the one who prefers it over shaving.

I get SO MUCH more/worse irritation and ingrowns when I shave. It also takes me at least 10 minutes to shave my bikini line. And a regular bikini should not cost $100.

My husband's preferences are completely irrelevant because it's none of his business.

    *slow clap*

Why else would you get it done? You can't see it yourself so your SO seems like the only reason to get it done?
I didn't realize people had such a hard time with shaving and getting ingrowns.

    ------
Because *I* like how sex feels with a waxed labia? It just makes it that much more enjoyable for me, with and without H.

  • blabla89 I'm so glad you went to European Wax Center! I swear their wax is magical. I've gotten waxed at Depi Wax, at many other spas with other hard and soft/strip waxes, and they are all significantly more painful.

Personally, if I shave I get horrible, and  mean the worst, ingrown hairs. I've actually had to have a derm surgically remove one that was so deep, and I had to get 2 stitches!

I use the serum from European Wax twice a day after being waxed and make sure to exfoliate a few days before and after the redness has subsided from being waxed. I also don't wear underwear with the tight elastics or lace on the bikini area (don't know how else to describe them) for about a week after.

Once I have enough $ saved I'm going to get the 5 wax pass where you get 1 or 2 free. Right now I'm saving for the wedding so I'm just trimming, but I used to get them every 6 weeks.

  • Thanks for posting this! I am going to the EWC on Sunday for my first wax ever! I have been so nervous! I wanted to before the wedding and we just ran out of time, and now we are going to Cancun in 9 days and thought it would be a great time! H is the one that hinted he wanted me to do it (and I kind of wanted to but was too timid) but I am making him come with me. He's pretty hairy himself, and while I like the hairy chest, the shoulders and patch on his back should be subjected to this as well!

Thanks for all the tips from everyone, I will be sure to take ibuprofen and buy that cream there after! My biggest question was length! They never said anything to me when I booked (I booked online) and I had heard you need to grow it out. But now I am finding myself 4 days out and it seems soooo long! Can it be too long?!?!

Yes, it can be too long.  It's more than a certain length (I can't remember what that length is right now, though), it's harder to actually pull the hair from the root, and it can be more painful.  However, I don't think 4 days would be enough time for it to be too long.  Also, if it is too long, the waxer should give you a trim before starting waxing.

Anything is too long for me haha the process of having to grow it out long enough to be waxed was torture for me... I just felt gross. Your waxer can trim it if necessary.

Yes.  My fiance prefers some hair.  I trim every month or so and clean up my bikini line a little bit, but no waxing for me- anywhere.

If I ever do anything to my brows, I tweeze a little or I have them threaded.
  • I did it! It did hurt but it was bearable and over pretty quickly.

The week and even hour leading up to it I was getting so nervous! I kept talking to H about it and about taking ibuprofen before etc etc etc. He was like "it wont be that bad" and kinda chuckled at me! Well when we finished (he did his back and shoulders) he said it hurt a lot more then he thought! HAHAHA who's laughing now!!!

  • I used to get them all the time. They're not too bad.

However, I did have one terrible experience when I had it done in my hometown. Chick did not know what she was doing at all. She thought pressing down after ripping the tape off helped with the pain, so there were points where I was concerned she was going to accidentally fist me. And 45 minutes later in terrible pain, I was still pretty hairy.

So. I would ask how long it takes and that should be a pretty good screen. It should only take about 15 minutes. And I had it done at a bunch of other places that all did it pretty much the same way and it's not bad at all, way better than shaving. If it weren't so expensive I'd still be doing it.

Also you should have about a quarter inch of hair grown out. Surprisingly, the mons hurts a lot more than the more intimate bits.
