AF, maybe I could talk H into it?  ;)

Also H tried the whole Scotch rocks thing and prefers ice instead.

I need to research the difference between scotch and bourbon, but not in a real setting because I can't stand the smell of any of it.  sad.

ETA:  Crash course completed.  And now, I understand.
  • Really basically?  It's all whiskey, just made differently.

Scotch = malted barley mash, usually only single malt, not blended
    Bourbon = Corn mash

Scotch and whiskey can be the same thing, b/c "scotch" is just whiskey specifically made in Scotland (it's the law).  Any place else, it's whiskey, i.e. one of the best scotches in the world, Suntory, made in Japan.  Also, when you start getting into blends vs. single malt, arguments can be had if it's still called scotch or not, it usually starts getting called whiskey, i.e. anything Johnny Walker.

Bourbon and whiskey can be the same, however bourbon is usually U.S.  You don't really see "bourbon" used anyplace else.  Bourbons also usually tend to be blended ingredients.

I really just need to open a damn bar.
  • It's 8:24 at night here, so we're watching the Nobel Prize Ceremony that's like half a kilometer away at Stockholm City Hall. Today, we went to the Nordiska museet and Skansen, so we got everything we wanted accomplished on that side of town and will spend tomorrow dicking around Gamla stan. Tomorrow's our last full day here -- our flight leaves on Friday at 5:30p :(.

My legs are absurdly swollen from all the walking around too. It succckkksss.

DH and I really love rye whiskey.  For the most value in price and flavor, it's pretty hard to beat Buffalo Trace.
I actually bought him a bottle of Buffalo Trace about a month or so ago on a recommendation from the guy at Goody Goody, and he really liked it. I also got him a bottle of TX (burbon?) at their recommendation which he enjoyed, and used in one of his beers. I can't remember the name.

I'm ok with spending in the $60-70 range for a gift bottle. I was planning on getting him some whiskey stones too, but the ones I ordered were stocked out and they cancelled the order. I need to go to Sur La Table, or maybe order those massive ice cube molds instead.
  • I got large-ish ice cube tray cheap on amazon recently for the Mr's stocking.  http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00395BD68/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

(I bought the one recommended here:  http://thesweethome.com/reviews/best-ice-cube-tray-for-cocktails/, because thesweethome is IMO, the best review site for household stuff.  But they've redacted their love for it w/ their new review of ice cube trays--they actually have an appendix for why they aren't as lovely:  http://thesweethome.com/reviews/the-best-ice-cube-tray/

way to much thought for $6 worth of ice cube trays, I know)
  • @GBCK I have never seen that blog before and it is awesome. I give no fucks about ice cubes but I do like well written reviews.
  • @*barbie*, we got whiskey rocks and I don't know about those.  I thought maybe it was just us, our freezer, or something, but none of my friends who like boozin' with us liked theirs either.  It gave an off flavor to nearly everything we put them in.  I think we finally just donated them or threw them out.  I'd do a big ice cube if you're just wanting the "cool" factor.

He might like the High West Whiskey series then.  We've had the campfire and, for being a smokier blend, I really enjoyed it.
  • @*Barbie*, the sister site is "the wire cutter" for all things gadget/electronic.
They initially started as a mission statement that sounded to me like "throwing things away is ecologically horrible.  Lets help make people have good choices so they don't throw shit out!"

I waited to buy new towels based on when their review of towels was being written.  And I DO love the towels :)
  • interesting re: whiskey rocks. he usually drinks it neat which is why i hadn't looked into the massive cube makers. (he's also using those little water-filled reusable plastic ice cubes right now) - from the explanation i get how the splash or water or melted ice would enhance the flavor - so maybe the giant ice cubes would be a better option. I might have to try the non-recommended silicone tray - i don't know if hed get the off flavor with distilled wter if they were regularly used, but replacing a $6 ice cube tray is still cheaper than $20 chunks of rock. :-P

@GBCK - that review site is insane. i kind of want to go on there and just read random reviews of stuff. it's always nice to understand what you're getting into.
  • ok, i ordered one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Home-Complete-Ice-Ball-Maker-Mold/dp/B00H8RVMC8/ref=pd_sim_k_3?ie=UTF8&refRID=11SY6CBBC8NSZ9F69CZA

i forsee a lot of jokes about frozen balls in our house.

*insert joke about Elsa's boyfriends* (I'm too lazy to come up with something right now)
  • I'll be sipping the bourbon we picked up in NY tonight.  I love bourbon.
  •  I like those.  Those would be awesome in a white wine too.  You could even freeze up the wine in advance.  Of course if you remember to do that, you'd probably remember to put the white wine in the fridge, so I'm still a hostess fail on that.
  • just freeze grapes, they're good in all wine.  ANd just to eat sometimes :)
  • I have ~5 cases of homemade wine right now, and another 6 gallons (~2.5 cases) in progress. The green apple riesling would probably be awesome if it was frozen. I might need to try that.

I'm trying to figure out a kegerator situation for the wine that I'm making right now - I want to make a sparkling wine, but I've been getting conflicting information on how to get the best outcome at home.  I've tried the base wine (Moscato) kegged, and it was fantastic. I've got a gallon of the wine (~5 bottles) that I'm making per the kit instructions. I added ~5lbs of cranberries to the remainder of the wine, and want to serve that carbonated without drying it out. (I want it to be slightly sweet, but have that tang from the cranberries.)

  • I thought about that, but my friend is GM at M.
