Need appetizer ideas

So I know I've seen a few of these threads floating around lately, but can't seem to find one.  I need some reccomendations for some good, crowd pleasing apps to make for my family christmas party this weekend and I know people on here always have great ideas, usually that I would have never thought of.  I think I am making buffalo chicken dip but I wanted to make at least one more thing.  Can be hot or cold, but nothing that needs to be in a crockpot.  Thanks in advance for your help :)

  • Crab dip? Softened cream cheese and crab meat mixed up and smashed into a ball, topped with cocktail sauce and served with Triscuits.

  • ooh ooh ooh! My new most favorite thing EVER! Bacon wrapped water chestnuts in homemade BBQ sauce. So freakin delicious! I made them for FSIL's xmas party and they were gone right away, and all the other food just sat on the table! Ha!

Get 2 cans of whole water chestnuts, drained and cut in half
1 or 2 packages of bacon, and slice the bacon into 2 to 3 pieces (I think it's easier to do 3 pieces so you don't have to wrap the bacon tons of times. Also if you put the bacon in the freezer for about 15 minutes it's way easier to slice)
    1 1/2 cups of ketchup
    2 tablespoons of white vinegar
    6 tablespoons of brown sugar

Wrap each bacon piece around a half of a water chestnut and secure with a toothpick. Bake at 350 for 30 minutes.

While they're baking, combine ketchup, vinegar, and brown sugar. Simmer on the stove for 30 minutes.

Then pour the sauce onto the bacon wrapped things (and mix it around a little so it's evenly distributed) and bake for 30 more minutes.

I seriously cannot get enough of these things, and FI would probably cut me if I was standing between them and him lol (not really though!)

  • Stuffed mushrooms and soppressata wrapped around brie. Yummmmm.

  • I do a baked Brie. I caramelize (sp?) some pecans in brown sugar and butter. Whole those are cooking I slice the Brie in half. You can either do the entire thing in a Brie baker but my fave is to wrap it in cressant rolls! If you do it this way, separate all the triangles of the cressant roll. Use them to make a sun/ beam pattern on the bottom of your baking dish. Put one half of Brie on top of your sunbeam. Add pecans to middle (or jam, walnuts, whatever you feel like) on top. Place other half of Brie back on, wrap tightly, bake as directed .

I now I wrote that like shit but I hope it makes enough sense!
  • If you don't want to do a lot of prep, shrimp cocktail is easy. Buy a bag of shrimp, cocktail sauce, a lemon and lettuce for plate garnish. Very easy.

If you have more time....we served bacon wrapped dates stuffed with herbed goat cheese at a party last weekend. Huge hit with our friends.

  • My friend made bacon wrapped tater tots.  After wrapping the tots in the bacon, you roll them in brown sugar and chili powder (to taste), then bake them in the oven.  OMG were they delicious!  They were also gone in a flash!
  • I was going to suggest bacon-wrapped dates too, though I usually don't include cheese.

Flatbreads are always popular in my family. Dh's family loves ceviche made with shrimp and imitation crab meat. My sister loves making skewers of chicken satay with peanut sauce. My dad kills it with homemade cheese puffs.

    And now I'm hungry.

  • These are my go-tos
Deviled eggs (I put curry powder in mine. SO GOOD!)
    Nacho dip
    Sausage balls
    Spinach & artichoke dip
    Baked brie
    Bacon cream cheese roll ups
    Ham & cheese crescent sandwiches
    Pizza bread roll
  • Second deviled eggs. I also like to make bacon-wrapped dates. Buffalo chicken dip though, that's actually my go-to appetizer for potlucks and I can never get enough. Can you please Fed Ex me some? I've fallen on hard times.

I made these for Brunchgiving! I used sweet potato tots from Trader Joe's. They were fantastic, and broke my "if anything is wrapped in bacon it better be a scallop" rule. There is NOTHING more disappointing than biting into what you think is a sweet, succulent, delectable scallop and getting a crunchy ass water chestnut instead. Hork.

OMG why didn't I think about sausage balls? Thanks for the reminder to bring them to H's family's Christmas Eve along with my crab dip. :) They don't like "froo froo" foods so those will be perfect.

They are always so perfect for a large group and most people love them. FMIL makes them for Christmas every year and gives all of us a small batch first.

Yeah they're always a huge hit at our Halloween party (along with their vegetarian cousin Spinach Balls). I just had a brain fart when asked to bring apps for H's step-dad's family.

  • So I don't think I've ever actually had or seen sausage balls but they seem to be popular. Anyone have a recipe to share?

  • We love Neese's sausage and I suggest you use the "hot" kind and extra sharp cheddar :)

  • This is the recipe I use

But I add in a little milk because it tends to be dry. And for a dipping sauce, I mix mayo and mustard.
  • This is officially the best thread ever and I want to have a Knottie holiday party with ALL OF THIS FOOD.

MIL makes prosciutto pinwheels for family gatherings, which I LOVE.  Super easy and yummy:

  • I prefer to dip my sausage balls in comeback sauce. I use Cholula hot sauce instead of Tabasco because it's the best.
