Re: HAPPY HANUKKAH!

  • Oh crap that's tonight, right? I guess I better go dig out my menorah...

I'm the worst Jew. But we did get a mensch on a bench this year!

Haha I only remembered it was tonight because my much more Jewish coworker told me.  I think my Disney menorah is in the closet,...

  • We're going to start trying to knock up Wifey tonight!

When I looked at the calender today I was very excited that we were going to start trying on the first night of Hanukkah. Even though we aren't Jewish.

I like Hanukkah, the lights, the dreidels, the food, seems like a good holiday.

Haha well happy hanukkah to you guys!  And yeah, as far as Jewish holidays go, it's relatively guilt free, latkes are yummy, I'm not mad at it.

Lol. I wrote on my calendar that tomorrow is the first day. Which it is. Which is why it starts tonight at sundown. I win for worst Jew!

  • @novella1186 haha I know, I always forget that the first "day" is actually the night before.  We always have to make shit complicated.  I'm going to sit here and listen to my fave hanukkah song - How Do You Spell Hanukkah?  (CLICK for the link)

Um what. Excuse me. Please to be showing pictures.

I have an old menorah my grandmother gave me (not an heirloom or anything). Every year I say I'll get a nicer, cooler menorah, and every year I don't. But next year for sure. If there was a Judaica store in our area, I'd go get one after work.

  • Whoooo!!  Playing dreidel with FI tonight!  Last year I always beat him, but he said that by being Jewish, I had an unfair advantage lol

Latkes are delicious.  And since my mom finally replaced Manaschewitz with savignon blanc, it should be a very happy Hannukah for me indeed
  • I got a menorah for my Bat Mitzvah. I always thought it was kind of ugly, but it wasn't like ... offensively ugly. I used it for a long time until I accidentally lost it at my in-laws' house (VERY long story involving a Christmas village ...). Last year, I was really bummed out that we didn't have a menorah for Chanukah, and we didn't get one as a wedding gift either. I kept whining to J about how the only ones I liked were over a hundred dollars, and could we maybe just get a cheap one for this year even though you don't like having lit candles in the house?

Turns out, he had bought me an incredibly nice menorah from the local Judaica shop. <3<3<3<3<3<3

That's so sweet! I think I also got one for my Bat Mitzvah, but it's at my dad's house clear on the other side of the country. It's clear/frosted glass made to look like the wailing wall, I believe. Last I heard he had it displayed in the dining room cabinet, and when my mom stopped by she pointed out he should make sure he saves it so it can be delivered to me at some point...and apparently he promptly wrote my name on it in permanent marker.

I don't know why I don't have it here. I suspect it has something to do with the cost of shipping it.

  • I'm Jewish on my maternal grandfather's side....but great-grandpa lied and said he was Catholic when he married great-grandma and they raised the kids vaguely Catholic. By which I mean they hit up church on the big holidays and whenever great-grandma felt guilty. By the time my mom was born no one attended anything. So I'm both a terrible Jew and a terrible Catholic. Terrible Luthern on dad's side. I suck at religion in general.

FI is half Jewish, he's slightly better then I am. Though I texted him to say tonight was the first night of Hanukkah and he said  "That might be why mom was asking if we were coming over tonight...", he does fully embrace Chrismukkah though.
  • I heard a Hannukah song on the radio! A parody to "Shake it Off". I enjoyed it. can't remember the guys' names .. 6 something..

I'm not Jewish, but I really, really want that T-rex menorah.

  • Happy Hannukah, everyone! I am not Jewish but have always had a soft spot in my heart for the Chosen.

  • I hope you guys all celebrated correctly last night; the first night of Hannukah is Kettle One night. Everyone knows this.
2nd night: Bacon and Christmas Vacation night (deliciously blasphemous)
    3rd night: Christmas shopping night
4th night: bourbon night (or Manhattan night if you happen to have sweet vermouth on hand)
5th night: Mumford & Sons night
    6th night: Taco night
    7th night: wine, wine, wine!
8th night: dirty martinis and cheeseburgers all around, and thus ends another great year of 8 nights of shenanigans ;)

Lol I made these up a couple years ago and for some reason I still stick to them. Although sometimes Christmas shopping night has to be replaced by liquor shopping night depending on when Hunnukah falls. Enjoy!

  • I'm not grown up enough for my own menorah.

    For now.

We're awful Jews (we like the term "secular humanists") and my dad grew up tent revival Christian. We're not religious.

My uncles are hosting later this week and I'm looking forward to that annual greasy latke stomach pain!

A few years ago the first night of Hannukah fell on the same night when we all met up at my parents house to go get a Christmas tree together (we used to make a big deal about it, even as adults, and go out to a tree farm, walk out into the hills, chop one down, drag it back, etc). When we got home with the tree, the sun was starting to go down so I started setting up the menorah. My parents told me to move "that thing" out of the way so there was more space to decorate the tree. Lol. Jew fail.
