Gift ideas?

I know everyone's got their own version of this thread up right now, so sorry for the overload.  I drew FSIL's name for FI's family gift exchange.  I'm having trouble coming up with ideas, and FI is little help.  FSIL is a cancer survivor who suffers from fibromyalgia and lives in a small town.  She doesn't often feel well enough to leave the house, so gift certificates for restaurants or mani-pedis aren't all that practical for her.  My idea is to make her time at home as comfy as possible, maybe get her some soft, fluffy socks and a cozy wrap.  Maybe add in some fancy hot chocolate or snacks and a DVD or two she might like.  Also, FI says she likes to scrapbook, so I thought maybe add in a gift card to a craft store, so she can get supplies online.  Our limit is $60, and I'd like to give her a few packages to open.  Any other ideas?

Re: Gift ideas?

  • Honestly, I like your ideas--comfy accessories, fancy hot chocolate, and DVDs. Maybe some books about things she likes?

  • Is it practical to make her some food that can be frozen to take the cooking load off of her?

Casseroles, soups, and chilis, not to mention lasagna, freeze well.

You could put them in nice (or even disposable) containers and that could be part of the gift too.
  • I like giving a big movie night basket: cozy blanket (Kohl's keeps putting them on sale), a DVD or two, microwave popcorn, candy, etc. Heck, for $60 you could even thrown in a Chromecast or something like that.

    It's pretty much always safe.

  • I like your ideas.  I suffer from chronic back pain, so spend a lot of time lounging at home when I'm having bad pain days.

As far as the fuzzy socks, these are absolutely awesome: "Heat Holders" .  DH bought them for me a few years ago and I love them. I wear them regularly when lounging at home. They are super warm and comfy.  We bought some for my mom last year for Christmas, too.

I would say maybe a heating pad, reusable gel ice pack, or something like that, but she may already have those.  Although, I will say that I tend to hold onto my heating pads a lot longer than I should before replacing them.

Or even a heated throw blanket may be nice to curl up in front of the tv.  Those are pretty affordable these days ($20-50). Or even a nice fuzzy unheated blanket.

Maybe do the socks, a nice fuzzy throw blanket, a movie, popcorn, and some hot chocolate or herbal tea.  That sounds like an awesome evening to me.

  • Would a microwavable spa pack (heating pad) be something she would enjoy?  You can buy them at stores like Bed Bath and Beyond or if you have a sewing machine you can make them fairly easiliy with rice and flannel.

I like your idea.  You could do a little "Spoil yourself" basket- throw in a few nice-smelling bath bombs or a face mask, a fluffy robe, a box or tin of herbal tea, a box of chocolates, and a small bottle of wine (If she likes wine)

ETA you could also throw in a jar of homemade sugar scrub- I usually throw equal parts baking soda and sugar, then add melted coconut oil (Enough so that it's a bit runnier than you want the final product to be, since the oil will solidify a little bit when it cools)
