Passive aggressive tantrums

Even animals have them. My big dog (his name is Novel) is a total angel. Even when he was a puppy he hardly did anything bad. I only remember him having 1 or 2 accidents in the house because he's super smart and was super easy to train, plus due to his breed he's inherently a people pleaser.

He used to have a super soft furry micro-fiber bed but he got scared in a thunderstorm and shredded the bed. So we got him a Kong bed, which wasn't soft and furry, but it was super durable. We wanted it to last longer this time cuz beds for dogs his size are expensive. But we've been suspecting for a while that he absolutely hates the Kong bed because of odd things he does (like sometimes he'll sleep right next to it on the floor but won't sleep on it, and if we tell him to sleep on it he'll leave the room).

Then last night I'm in the shower and I hear a huge commotion. I hop out to see what's going on and FI says "Novel took the biggest crap I've ever seen!" Um... why does that matter? So I ask "Where?" FI says "On his bed!"

I run into our bedroom and sure enough there's a giant crap on his bed! What the hell?!!! He's NEVER misbehaved like this before! So clearly he hates the bed. Hates it so much he decided to take a crap on it to express his true feelings. It was extremely hard to yell at him when I could hardly even talk because I was laughing so hard.

Needless to say we are now looking for a new bed for him, one that he'll hopefully hate less.

But just look at that sweet face! How could he be bad?! (I had to attach the photo of him and I from last summer cuz as I was flipping through my photos and saw it my first thought was "hm if that was my FI instead of the dog that would have been a great engagement photo") Haha.

So anyway. I want to hear about your fur babies' tantrums. I know there's some funny stories out there!

Re: Passive aggressive tantrums

  • Omgggg my dog throws the biggest temper tantrums. We've had him two months and spoiled the shit out of him, so really it's our own fault. If he wants something that we have (usually food) or we're not paying attention to him, he does this little back kick thing and start making these little chuff noises. That's how we knows he's pissed off. It's hilarious though because he's all of 9 pounds and trying to be tough. He's also punishing us now for leaving him in his crate while we're at work. He used to pee outside his crate during the day (no idea how he managed that) so he didn't have it in his crate, but now he just pees all over his towel in the crate and lays in it all day out of spite. I only think this because he sleeps in his crate with no issue overnight, but he knows we're home with him.

He also goes after thing he's not supposed to when we leave the room and aren't paying attention to him. His new favorite is the Christmas tree skirt - he knows he's not supposed to touch it but every time we leave the room, he goes right for it and pull it out from under the tree into the middle of the living room. He's super sneaky and quiet about it too. Just like a little kid. I'm going to start wrapping presents tonight so that way he can't keep taking the tree skirt.

  • My parents dog knows he's not supposed to go in my dad's closet (my dad is majorly into clothes, he has a bigger walk in closet than my mom and loves custom suits.)  When the dog doesn't want to go to the vet or the groomer, he goes and hides under my dads suits.  It's hilarious haha.

Lol my beagle does the bolded. But she gives out just one extremely loud, extremely sharp, ear-splitting bark and then just glares. If she wants to sit on my lap but I have my computer on my lap, she'll just stand there and glare and then do the one bark. If I give her a bath or clean out her ears, she'll do the one bark and glare, and then go hide under a chair in the corner. I call that her naughty spot cuz that's also where she hides her stolen goods. And she'll hide toys under there cuz the big dog can't fit back there to get them. She's quite the little monster when she wants to be.

  • HAHAHA I'm sorry but that's hilarious.

One of our dog jumps out of bed as soon as FI's alwarm goes of and starts whining (very loudly) until FI gets up. When she first started doing this I was all like, "AWWW, she doesn't want you to be late." No. It's more like, "She wants you to get up so she can lay in your spot." Total diva.

  • Oh man. I'm sitting here silently cracking up. I can't believe he crapped on your bed!

When Stella was a puppy, she was SO needy. She was whining to go out at 7am, after I'd already walked her twice. I really thought she was whining because she wanted to go chase the squirrels. I was hungover and tired and laying on the couch, and I didn't want to get up. I was like, "Dude, I will take you out in a few minutes." Then I fell asleep. When I woke up, she had pooped ON ME. On the blanket I was laying underneath.

Omg. I am laughing so hard right now!

  • Mine has major separation anxiety.  And he's a shredder.  So when he was a puppy, if we left him unkenneled when we left the house, he'd shred anything he could get his lips on.  Towels, blankets, the couch, our mattress, a door.  He even shreds when he's kenneled.  He'll chew up any blanket you put in the kennel with him, and he also chewed the wooden table next to his kennel.

One time, he broke his kennel trying to escape so we had to leave him out when we left the house to get another kennel.  We thought we were being smart putting him in an empty room in the basement filled with dog toys.  The walls were cinderblock and we had closed the door, so you'd think there wouldn't be much trouble he could get into.  Wrong.  We came home to him sitting on the couch.  He had chewed through the door to get out of the room, gone up the basement steps and jumped over the babygate at the top of the steps.  Still cant figure out how he did that.  Luckily, that apparently tuckered him out, because he did very little damage once he was freed.

  • My parents have a shih tzu who is SO moody. He was a Christmas gift to me in high school and we were super close.

The first time I left for college, he pined for me. I came home on break and he wanted nothing to do with me. I had done laundry and laid clean clothes on my bed. He took a shit on my pile of clean clothes on my bed. That let me know he was pissed I left him.

He's gotten more moody in his old age. We call him Curmudgeon now.

lol that's so mean of him! I would be super mad. I had a cat that stayed with my parents when I left for college. One weekend when I was home, I laid out a dry-clean-only cashmere sweater because I wanted to wear it the next day. The cat pushed my bedroom door open, strolled in, and puked right in the middle of the sweater. I don't think he was mad at me, though, I think he was just an asshole or had extremely unfortunate aim. When he was a kitten he climbed inside my closet and pooped in my slipper.

  • Maury destroys everything too. We got him in May and he's gone through 6 beds. The last bed was a Kong that he hated as well. We bought it because we thought he wouldn't destroy it but fluff was starting to come out of it already. Ironically, it got tossed when he pooped on it. He's currently bed-less because he shreds them ridiculously fast.

We're actually pretty ticked with him right now. He's been having accidents in his crate recently, a few nights a week. He's also refusing to go outside at night lately. We took him to the vet about it, thinking that maybe there was something wrong with him- we're worried that he's got parasites or an infection or joint issues that make him not want to go into the cold. Nope. He's perfectly healthy, just lazy.

  • My bulldog is moody as shit. Last night we went out to dinner and she wouldn't even look at us when we came home. She did lift her leg so I could scratch her belly, while giving me the hairy eyeball.

We moved into a new house in June and shortly after that my mom was diagnosed with cancer. So I was spending ALL my time at my mom's. Edna was none too pleased and crapped in the dining room. She's never once crapped in the house unless she was super sick so I know it was to tell me something.

She's not allowed on any furniture and sometimes when we're just laying around watching TV she'll come up and whine all obnoxious. I'm convinced that she doesn't even know when she wants. She just wants. Period.

  • When kitty thinks we aren't paying enough attention to her she starts to lick the outlets.

When she wants attention while we are sleeping she tries to break into the closet. Last night she did it at 4AM because she wanted me to pick her up so she could sleep on me. She couldn't just climb on the bed and cuddle up with me, she wanted me to get out of bed, pick her up and tuck her in with me under the blankets.

  • Haha that's too funny! Our dog does some really needy, yet adorable stuff. He's a 10lb Chihuahua/Jack Russell mix so he's pretty little. One night we left for several hours and when we got back home, he had DESROYED a bag of trash we had sitting in the corner. It was like he thought we were never coming back so he ate all the food he could find lol. So much for rationing.

He also does this thing where he sits on FI's chest if FI is laying down, and if FI doesn't look at him, he paws at his face over and over until FI pays attention to him. Cutest ever. To me, not to FI lol

Another time, we went out during the morning and stupidly left our breakfast dishes on the table. (We eat at the coffee table because we're lazy and don't want to put everything in the dining room.) We get back home and I look at our dog who appears to be wet. I'm like, "Why are you wet? What have you been doing?" I touch the 'wetness' on his fur and it's dried SYRUP. Then I see a trail of syrup from the coffee table, to the carpet, to the couch and all over the couch cushions. He had drug a peice of leftover french toast from the table to the couch and then apparently rolled around in the syrup after he ate the toast. FI washed him while I washed the couch and furniture.

This is hilarious!!! My beagle will grab the edge of a bowl and pull it down just to see what's in it. The first time she did this she was a puppy and I didn't even know it was something she could do. I had JUST sat down at the coffee table with a big bowl of cream of potato soup. She grabbed the edge and pulled it, and the bowl flipped over on top of her. Cleaning cream of potato soup off a dog and off the carpet is not easy or fun. Lesson learned that day.

  • ok I'm so glad I started this thread. You guys are cracking me up!

  • Bahahaha.  This is hilarious.

Side note: Costco sells giant dog beds at more reasonable prices (they're around $65 instead $200.  They're not super fancy or anything, but they should fit your pup).

    image
  • We got our dog a Kong bed and he hates it too. I'll admit it doesn't look very comfortable, but he will also sleep on the floor next to it, or with just his back legs on it. We ended up getting him a bed from Costco that he likes better.

But FI has spoiled him to the point that he wants to sleep in our bed every night. This is a problem when you have a queen-bed, 6'4 fiance, cat that manages to take up a nice chunk, and a 105lbs dog that can easily cover 2/3 of the bed. He sleeps on FI's side of the bed when he's out of town (not because I let him but because he does whatever he wants). So when FI is home, the dog whines all night because he's not allowed in the bed.

Needless to say, I want dog training classes for Christmas.

  • Thought of another - Fred will also talk over me if I'm trying to get him to listen to basic commands. H has successfully taught him to sit and to lay down and I'm working on stay with him. He'll get through about two commands and anymore than that - he starts barking over me when I'm trying to tell him to sit and stay. I ended up in a shouting match last night with my own dog. H just sat there and laughed at us. He's a yorkie with a serious attitude.
  • Bryn is a giant AW. She needs to be near us at all times, and will force her head under your hand to make you pet her. But it's really obnoxious when she's always under foot. So we'll tell her to go lay in her bed (they have a bed in the living room). So she'll stomp over there and lay down, then s-l-o-w-l-y inch herself off until only the tiniest portion of her butt is still technically "on the bed" and she's as close to us as doggily possible without disobeying.

  • I giggled reading that @Novella. Your dog sounds absolutely adorable. My pup doesn't really throw temper tantrums but she pouts, goodness gracious does she pout. When I leave for work or to go somewhere she climbs onto the loveseat (which has become her designated bed) and will put her head down. She will not kiss me, will barely lift her head when I say goodbye and gives me the biggest puppy dog eyes you have ever seen! I feel so bad every time I leave her. I have never met a dog who was like this until I had her.

  • @Novella1186, what type of kong bed do you have? My dog sleeps on her bed but she has ruined every one of them. She messes them up and sometimes shreds them. I would like to get a durable one that she can't destroy.

My dog is the world's greatest pouter. You'd swear that he had the hardest life ever by the way he pouts. Whenever H leaves the house, he'll spend half an hour trying to find him, and then come and throw himself on the couch, looking as forlorn as possible. He won't even acknowledge me until his dad comes home. And when we try to put him in the crate in the morning, he runs to his chair and just stares at us with his big brown eyes and tries to look at little as possible. This of course breaks my heart, even though I know it's a ploy.

This made me LOL because something similar happened with FI and our dog. Peewee likes to get under the bed covers, but doesn't realize that he can't pull them back if he's standing on them. So he walks backwards while pulling the covers back and just pulls them down away from us. One night he kept doing this repeatedly, and finally FI was like  "STOP MESSING UP THE COVERS!!" and Peewee barked back loudly at FI several times like Don't yell at me!!

    I thought I would die.

It's just one of those big flat pillows with a canvas material. It is really really durable but since it's canvas it's not very cozy. We've tried putting a fuzzy blanket over it for him, but he kicked the blanket off the bed and then slept on the floor on the blanket. Jerk.

  • My toller fakes a limp. A few years ago she got a growth on her foot that was removed and had a cast for a while. Once it came off, she would still limp around on the foot. When she went to the vet for a check up on the foot, we asked him about it. He said most dogs who had the whole toe removed usually stopped limping by this point, so he agreed she was faking. She stopped after a while but still limps around when she want attention. We tell her to stop and she does. Once when we were on vacation, one of my brother's friends was watching her and she started limping. We told her the dog was faking but she still had her mom come and check. The mom agreed. So now most people know she fakes her limp. That and some times she switches feet between steps.
  • When my dog was a puppy he was pissed at us for something, and tore the SHIT out of our mattress.  like big gaping holes.... we flipped the mattress and tried to make sure the bedroom door stayed closed.... nope, got in again and destroyed the other side! At that point we put it in the guest room and put a heavy feather topper on it!

He is such a troublemaker, and AW.

Pic was a few years ago... but seriously that face!
  • This is really funny!

My family's dog is so needy and bratty sometimes ha. He is this small fluffy white dog (Maltese) but he thinks he is the biggest thing around. He constantly wants attention and wants to be near people. We have had him since I was 7 and I'm 21 now. The first time I came home from break, he watch me make my bed and wanted to get on it. So I put him on it and then he threw up on my bed! The little brat watch me do laundry, and make my bed! So I knew he was mad at me ha. Apparently he always sleeps in my room on my bed. I can't wait to see him!

  • My parents have two golden retrievers who don't like to be told what to do. If you tell them to go lay down, they will go to their assigned spots, lay down and then let out really big disgusted sighs. The 3 year old also gives actual side eye if he's not getting what he feels is the appropriate amount of attention, and will put his head under your hand and tilt his nose upward so that you're forced to pet him. It's really obnoxious but pretty clever and clearly works. His only destructive behavior comes if he's super bored and isn't getting enough exercise.
