Morning sickness...ugh!

I'm 10 weeks pregnant and have had bad morning sickness for the last three weeks. I've puked more in that time than in the rest of my life. It's always worse in the evenings. I haven't found much to help with the nausea once it starts other than curling up in a ball on the couch. :( I've started taking something for it, which has made it less frequent, but it still rears up a few times a week.

My mom was sick the entire 9 months of her pregnancies with me and my sister (and only 7 1/2 months with my brother), and I'm terrified that the same thing is going to happen to me.

I've heard all the advice, so I guess I'm just whining here... Oh, and to top it off, I've had a UTI the past couple days--so that's been REAL fun!

Re: Morning sickness...ugh!

  • Ugh I'm sorry. I've never been pregnant but I've had some serious stomach issues since I was 8 or 9 (so about 20 years) and my major symptom is always nausea. Like I get so nauseous sometimes that I can't even stand to move. So I know how miserable it is.

Don't worry about it lasting your whole pregnancy. That's just gonna put unnecessary stress on you, and it likely won't turn out that way. Every pregnancy is different, and yours will likely be much different from your mom's (from what I've been told).

Again, I'm sorry you have to deal with this. Hugs! I hope it goes away soon and stays away!

  • Ugh I'm sorry! Just keep in mind that it'll all be worth it!

  • I've been really fortunate with rarely being sick. I'm 13 weeks. Im told eating often, ginger or mint candies, and b6 vitamin help. Hope you feel better soon! It's all worth it in the end.

  • I'm 9 weeks and Ive been pretty lucky on the sickness front. I've only felt nauseous a few times but it has passed quickly. I've been dizzy as fuck though. Almost everytime I stand up I have to brace myself. The PPs are right though. It will all be worth it.

Morning sickness is horrible and I wouldn't wish it on the worst of my enemies :( I had morning sickness up until five months and it really REALLY sucks. Here's what worked for me: lollipops (specifically preggie pops), ginger chews, and mint tea. As soon as I started to feel the least bit of nausea coming on, I would grab whatever was closest to me: a lollipop, a ginger chew, or a mint tea bag (use it for the smell), and it would lessen the symptoms a bit. If you have long hair, I would also suggest investing in hair ties or thick headbands. They come in very handy when your SO is unable to make it to the bathroom to hold your hair back (I learned this one the hard way).

As for coping with nausea, I would also find myself on the couch. Whenever I would lie down, my FI would grab a wet washcloth and hold it to my forehead which also helped a bit, but to each her own.  Again, I am so sorry that you are going through this. If its any consolation, all pregnancies are different, and just because your mom had morning sickness for 7.5 months, doesn't necessarily mean you will (fingers crossed). Hopefully some of the suggestions will work in addition to the medication, and that you'll have an easier time.

Best of luck! It will be worth it in the end
  • It's disgusting, isn't it? I had sever morning sickness with my first child. I couldn't keep anything down for the first trimester, except for saltines and juice. Then one morning I got up, ate and nothing happened. I hope your morning sickness is over soon.

  • I have had pretty mild morning sickness, but I'm 27 weeks, and it has yet to completely go away. Also, mine didn't start until about 10 weeks in (I had mild, but near constant nausea from about week 5 to week 10, but didn't actually throw up until week 10). It has varied from about three times a week at the worst and once every two weeks at best, so It's nothing to complain about...except that it started waking me up in the middle of the night last week. I'm hoping that was a 2-night fluke and not a real thing.

Are you taking Zofran? If you're puking multiple times a day, you really might want to consider it. Otherwise really strong Ginger Beer works pretty well for me. Also, my H makes me Ginger Lemonade that is like nuclear grade on the ginger, and we don't put sugar in it, which is the problem with the Ginger Beer. So. Much. Sugar.

I get just wanting to whine about it. Even with my mild morning sickness, I always text my mom and my bff for sympathy.

This is something I figured out too. Ginger ale was a little helpful but the sugar was way too much. Ginger beer was better, but again the sugar was too much. The ginger tea meant specifically for nausea made me really sick.  I ended up shaving fresh ginger into club soda and that was much better because no sugar. Fresh ginger shaved into chamomile tea can also sometimes help. If you find something that works, or at least helps, stick with it!

  • Ugh. I'm sorry :/

I totally lucked out on the m/s front so have no first hand experience to share, but I've had a couple of friends that had good luck by taking B6 and Unisom. It's obviously something you'd want to discuss with your OB, but might be an option if you don't have any luck with diet modifications (e.g. ginger, sour stuff, etc.) or prescriptions.

  • Mine was bad (5-6 times a day) for 12 weeks then gone. Hope this happens to you too. One of my husbands friends worked with me and told him she thought I had an eating disorder because I was throwing up. We didn't tell anyone outside of family until around 14 weeks.
  • I'm so sorry. My sister is 20 weeks along and has had a really hard pregnancy. Turned out she has Hyperemesis Gravidarum (what Princess Kate had). I've seen how bad it can get, and I hope you get well soon!

That is what my OB suggested to me. They don't see you until between 8 and 10 weeks; and then the holidays pushed my appointment back another week. Since they hadn't seen me, they couldn't give me a prescription. The first couple days, it really seemed to help--the last couple it's been worse than before. Today was the worst day so far--I've only moved from the couch to puke.

I've tried ginger ale and ginger tea--I may need to try some of these other suggestions.
@Blergbot--can you tell me more about this ginger lemonade? It sounds like something worth trying...

This sounds miserable. (No brilliant suggestions, just sympathy.)
  • Two things:
    1. Whenever my mom had a UTI, she threw up. This went on like, forever. As soon as the UTI abated, her throwing up always stopped.  I hope your infection clears up the ms as well.
    2. Keep a LITTLE something in your stomach. Saltines are the greatest as they have calming baking soda in them. Try eating one every 15-30 minutes.
I'm sorry and hope you are better all over soon.
