Talk to me about Bra Cups

Hi Ladies. My first fitting is months away (I only ordered my dress about 3 weeks ago) so I know I'm worrying about this waaaay ahead of time, but I'm concerned about what to wear underneath. It's a backless dress pretty much (very low v back) and the bridal store said that the seamstresses can sew in bra cups if I want after I try it on the first time.

The reason I'm concerned is I'm a pretty full 34C and I'm not sure if bra cups just kind of smooth everything out (i.e. no nip) or if they actually offer any support. Like I said before, they're not small and I'm 33 so they're not quite up to where they used to be, so wearing something that just smooths things over might not look so great.

I guess what I'm asking is, has anyone with a fuller chest had bra cups sewn in and what was your experience, or do you think I'm better off going with one of those stick on strapless bras and do those even work? I don't need push-up type cleavage I just need moderate support.

Sorry in advance if this is a stupid question but I have not yet mastered being a woman.

Re: Talk to me about Bra Cups

  • The support will be provided by the dress itself, not the cups. Just like with a bra, most of the support comes from the band.

If your dress is made with a material and structure that will hold you in and up, the cups will give extra shaping. If it's loose/drapy/thin, the cups won't help much - like cups in a teeny string bikini might make your boobs look nice... just not lifted.

I'm 31 and a 34C and added the cups to give a better shape and a little more "oomph." But it was the inner corset and sturdy fabric that actually supported the girls.

  • @lolo883 put it perfectly. The dress, not the cups, should be secure enough to support everything. I had the opposite problem and was scared my strapless, heavy dress would be falling down all night, but with the boning, inner corset and some alterations it was perfect. We added cups to create some "poof", as the alteration lady said. Don't worry at all!

  • Yikes, I thought that might be the case, it is not at all structured in the bodice. Guess I should be looking into those pasty bras then.

  • Is wearing a corset style shaper out of the question? A friend who recently got married wore one under her dress and you couldn't tell at all. Just an idea.

I am having cups sewn in my strapless dress and it has a little lift but not over the top. They used a fairly thin cup since I'm already a size 34D. Since your dress doesn't sound structured I can see why this might not work.

If you go with a sticky bra, try them out while you wait for the dress to come in so you know if they will hold up alright. Good luck!

  • What about something like a low back bustier (as pictured or similar)? I am full busted and can't use those sticky cups. My opinion is that they don't do anything for full busts.

  • Thanks for the help guys. yeah I'll probably have to order a sticky bra or two and try them pretty soon.I don't think  corset will do it because the back of the dress is down to my lower back. I haven't seen any bustiers or corsets that  come down that low (I should have thought of this at the time but I liked it so much I was just like "yeah I'll figure it out later!"

    Silly me...

Love my Nubra ultralite.  It's the fabric one, not the silicon one that looks like chicken cutlets.  If you rinse it right after you wear it, you can use it over and over again.  I tend to replace it about every two years, but I also don't wear it that often.  I have one left over from 2006 or 2007 that looks grimy now, but still sticks.

If you go that route, buy from a real store to make sure you're not getting a chinese knockoff.  And buy one cup larger than your actual size.  They're pretty small.  Do some practice runs of holding up everything, then kind of cupping from below to get everything, and give it lift.  If you want more cleavage, you can kind of push them up and together before you stick it on.  If you want less, you can stick it on when they're naturally a little lower (push them up with your hands less/not at all).

I think I'm on my fourth one now?  They're fantastic.  Once you figure out the "go one cup size up" thing.  Before that, had trouble fitting my nips in sometime!

I ended up skipping the sewn in cups and using a Nubra wedding day.  Even in an outdoor wedding and lots of dancing, the sweat didn't make it any less sticky.  Just be sure your skin is clean and dry before you put them on, too--not lotioned up.  If your hands that touch the edges or skin has lotion on it, won't stick at all.

ETA: I'm basically your size--32D/32DD.  The sister size is 34Cish.
