Tuesday

Good morning everyone!!

I have some exciting news! I came into work this morning and my boss pulled me into her office and asked me how I would feel taking over the executive assistant position with her boss (who is a VP).  This VP is the reason I have my job and he said he had wanted to hire me from the start, but thought it would be better to give the position to someone internal, and gave me that person's job.  He has regretted that decision and knows I could handle the fast paced environment.  I have no idea when this promotion will happen, right now it was more of a question to see if I would be interested.  It took all of my strength to walk back to my desk calmly, because inside I was like: image

Re: Tuesday

  • That's one hell of a way to start your Tuesday!! I hope you get the job! I'm sure you'll be great at it.

My youngest DD tried to stay home and play hookie today. Luckily I was able to talk with her and get her to admit her stomach didn't really hurt and that she could probably tough it out until Friday. They're off Friday and Monday this weekend.

In other news I got my new phone yesterday, and I'm really finding it hard to love the Droid platform. I just miss the intuitiveness of the iPhone so much. It was so easy for me to work with and manage. I really hope I don't regret this decision.

Oh, and I stepped on the scale this morning. Bad idea. Very very bad idea. That is all.

  • That's a nice start of a week!
I hope that promotion comes quickly!
Seems like they saw their mistake.

  • @speakeasy14, congrats!

@ollie08, you don't like the Galaxy S4? I'm unboxing mine tonight (it came yesterday but I didn't have time). I'm nervous ... we'll probably end up learning it together.

So yesterday I blocked the afghan - it measured at 34" square and we blocked to 38" because it got wet and just went "blargh I'm relaxed okay." Got a haircut, not what I normally get but I've been told I have to have hair on my wedding day. My mom and I put together a couple sprays for centerpieces. She thinks they're heavy, I think they're pretty, so we'll have some discussions next weekend when she puts together a few more different things.

Today I get to work on part of the college's website. Woo!
  • @KeptInStitches - It's just so different for me from my iPhone. I know I switched because I was unimpressed with their recent offerings and felt like I was just getting a shinier piece of the same equipment if I went with it, but I am struggling with the Galaxy. H has one and so does my mom, but I still can't really figure out how to customize it. Plus it comes pre-installed with all of this crap that I can't delete for whatever reason. Oh, and I dislike how I can't shut off my gmail from pushing emails without having to log out of my account. That's annoying. But if I remember right, this is your first smartphone?

  • @ollie08 I used Youtube and Samsung forums to get a lot of info when I first got my Galaxy.  THIS link may help with the basic stuff for now.

  • Morning everybody!

@speakeasy14 - Congrats!  That so exciting!

I'm working from home today...which means right now I'm listening to NPR and having coffee, but that I'll start cataloging the last of the research photos soon.  I also teach Zumba tonight--haven't taught a class since before Christmas, so I'm ready to get back to it!

I did find out something exciting yesterday.  As I've posted a lot before, both Mr. H and I are looking for new jobs...me because I'm graduating in May and my assistantship goes away, and Mr. H because he just really needs a new job.  We both want teaching jobs, but there aren't very many of them and so finding something together is really tough.  Well...yesterday I found a posting for a school that wants 2 history teachers...one in my specialty and one in his!  We're going to apply together as sort of a "collective package," so I'm hoping that will get their attention.  This would be AMAZING if we could get it, so all the T&P please!
  • @futuremrshistorian Lots and lots of positive vibes your way!!!!

  • @TwoDimes - Blargh my mom has the S4 and has issues with it eating her data. I always blamed it on her technological incompetency. What kind of issues do you have with yours?

@Speakeasy14 - Thanks! I'll have to check it out. I just really am being stubborn changing platforms even though I did it to myself. I will say that it's pretty. Especially with my pretty case I bought for it. And I like the screen size better. It's better for my old eyes.

  • Congrats @speakeasy14! I'm sure it will be a fast paced job, but that always seems to make the days go by quicker, when I'm busy more constantly.

@KeptInStitches - Who says you have to have hair? Bald brides are the new bride with hair!.... But seriously, after I moved in with my current BF, and knew I wanted to marry him, I started growing mine out, haha. I look like such an insanely different person with long hair!

@futuremrshistorian - Good luck on the job applications! What an awesome opportunity!

    -----------------------------------------

Well ladies, I really have nothing to talk about. I started dinner in the crockpot this morning. It's kind of a twist on shepherd's pie, and after it cooks in the crockpot all day I pour corn bread mix over the top and let that cook. I hope it turns out good!

Also, I think my BF is just pretending to "be okay" with watching Friends on Netflix, because he honestly seemed upset when I asked if he wanted to switch to something else last night! AND he kept watching even when I went to take my bath, which I thought was hilarious. But also sucked, because I missed Ross kissing Rachel. UGH.

  • @twodimes I'm not sure how different Verizon phones are from AT&T, but this sounds like a manufacturer defect; or a Verizon issue.  Do the SIM and SD cards click in their spots? That's how they are with AT&T and once they click they do not move.

I'm honestly amazed by all the issues with the S4.  I had the S3 and never had an issue, now have the S5 and haven't had any issues (but I've only had this phone since New Years so still transitioning).

KeptInStitches I'm guessing your mom said you have to have hair for your wedding?  Do you have pictures of the sprays, or waiting till you have more options?
    image
  • @ollie08, it is my first smartphone, but I've played with my FI's Droids quite a bit over the years.

    @twodimes, that sucks. I hope that I don't have those issues ...

@futuremrshistorian, all the vibes for you!

@alpacina, it's not that I'm bald, I just wear my hair very short (I think about 0.5" long). My mom told me she couldn't pin any hair accessories into it and I had to grow it out long enough to bobby pin into. Grrrrr.
  • @KeptInStitches - I know you're not bald. I was saying you should go bald for the wedding! :P

  • @alpacina, I think I've unfortunately outgrown the point in my life where I can shave my head and get away with it as a fashion choice.
  • @alpacina haha my bf did the same thing! He made a big deal about having to watch Friends, but when I left the room & came back, he was fully emerged in the episode.  And the crock pot shephards pie sounds really good!

  • @twodimes I know Best Buy has a Samsung specialist on site.  Not sure what other places do, but maybe bring the phone to them and see what they say.
    image
  • @futuremrshistorian - I am TOTALLY rooting for you both!!!  is it in the same area you are now?
  • @TwoDimes - I worried about that too, especially because he's been teaching for longer than I have and our qualifications aren't exactly identical (he finished his PhD 10 years ago; I'm just finishing mine now, etc.)  The reason we decided to apply together is because the posting itself is for 2 people.  It's not 2 separate advertisements for 2 different positions, it's one advertisement that asks for 2 people.  I showed the posting to a couple of people I know in HR in similar institutions, and they said it actually might give us a leg up to go ahead and present ourselves together so the hiring committee sees everything we can offer up front, because they will want to see how the two people they hire will work together.  Partner hires are still really common in academia, so this isn't exactly unusual, although I've never seen a posting quite like this.  But the people I talked to said that since we come as a package deal anyway, and the posting does ask for two people with our specific backgrounds, probably better to go ahead and present it all at the beginning, instead of saying after the fact "Oh, by the way...my partner is perfect for your other position, why don't think think about hiring them."

    Thanks for all the vibes!
  • @CocoBellaF - Ugh, no, not at all...it's in the frozen wasteland of the North.  But it's a really interesting school, and if we get to be together...I'll move wherever.
  • @futuremrshistorian - the absolute best of luck to you both!!  how soon do you think it'll be until you have an idea?
  • @CocoBellaF - Not sure exactly.  The posting just went up last Thursday, but we need to try to get our app in as soon as possible because there's no "review of applications will begin on X date" thing.  The job doesn't start until August, but I would guess they want to hire people as quickly as possible to plan ahead for course offerings, etc.  I think we're going to try to get our application together this week.

@TwoDimes - Academia is a very strange place.  Hiring practices especially.
  • @futuremrshistorian Sending you both all the vibes! Very interesting that they're doing a 2-for-1 posting... sounds like it was made for you two.

    @speakeasy14 CONGRATS!!!!!

@ollie08 I've been avoiding the scale. It's my mortal enemy right now. Also, that's too funny about DD. I remember pulling that sort of thing allll the time when I was a kid and thinking I was so sneaky. I really think it's great that you recognized she was faking and then got her to admit it rather than ignoring her. You are such a great mom!

@AlPacina I love that your BF loves Friends! Best show ever!

    ____________

Not too much to report over here. Work has been crazy today (more CRM issues, a vendor partner driving me nuts, etc), and this afternoon will be filled with meetings. Tonight I may go to the gym for the first time in 6 weeks... depends on how sore my arms are from allergy shots. Time to get into diet and exercise mode. This year I'm going to cut out soda even on cheat days... the only time I'll allow myself to drink it is if I'm mixing it with alcohol. I also want to be vigilant about working out 4 days per week and sticking to one cheat meal per week.

We got approval today to start working from home one day a week starting in February. Woohoo!

Okie doke, back to work. I used my lunch break today to get allergy shots, so I need to eat at my desk today while going through a pile of emails.

Oh! Also, almost forgot... I just finished reading The Princess Bride, and I highly recommend it! It's one of my new all-time favorites.

  • @eilis1228 - Aww thanks! I try my best with that whole honest approach thing with the girls. I'd rather you fess up and tell the truth than lie to me. That being said, I will let them play hooky every once in a while if they actually admit it. Otherwise the rule is if you're not throwing up or don't have a fever, you're going to school.
