Talk to me about Podcasts!

So I am a loser with an Android. I love everything about it except that it doesn't have iTunes. So like a silly person I just assumed for the longest time that meant the only way I could get Podcasts on my phone was to either download them on a computer and transfer them over (a real hassle) or find a website where I could download the Podcast as an mp3 from my phone, which was less of a hassle but still one. Then finally I looked it up and it turns out there is totally an Android app that allows you to manage and download podcasts. So now I need some more podcasts! Recommendations?

I'm currently listening to the Nerdist, Professor Blastoff, Serial, Stuff to Blow Your Mind, and a couple of Disney parks apps. I love learning new things, particularly about science, but the easier it is for me to understand, and/or the funnier it is, the better.

What are your favorite podcasts? What can you recommend to a newbie like me?

Re: Talk to me about Podcasts!

  • I only listen to Dave Ramsey and Gary Sullivan, sorry!

They can be funny in their own way, but it's not so much entertainment.

  • Not science related but the Moth is one of my favorites. I also listen to The History Chicks. They are not very funny but very entertaining.

  • Check out the Joe Rogan Experience podcast. Look for ones where he's interviewing other comedians or actors (he's a commentator for the UFC so sometimes he's interview fighters and they end up talking a lot about martial arts). He's funny but he's also really into new age science, government conspiracies and other interesting topics.
  • I like SModcast, which is basically Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes talking and joking and stuff.
If you are into computer/tech stuff, SO likes The Tech Guy with Leo Laport, This Week in Tech, Security Now, Before You Buy, This Week in Google, MacBreak Weekly, Tech News 2Night, Windows Weekly, and Android App Arena.

  • Serial is fantastic!  Really good - and even better when you don't have to wait a week for the next episode to come out
  • I loved Serial!  Can't wait for the second installment.  If you like the science, I listen to StarTalk Radio with Dr. Neil Degrasse Tyson.  It's really interesting, and sometimes he has awesome guests, like Bill Nye the Science Guy.

That sounds right up my alley! Thanks!

I work pretty close to Woodlawn high school.  One day during lunch, we did a "Serial" tour - drove by the high school, the library, the Best Buy.  Not Leakin Park because it sounds scary, but we drove around the rest of it

  • This American Life and Snap Judgment are both great. If you know serial I assume you know TAL - Snap is kind of similar. They describe themselves as story telling with a beat.

If you like sciency stuff, you might like the TED radio hour. They pick a couple TED talks that relate and go a bit more in depth. Or you could download TED talks. I find some more interesting than others and only download when the topic looks good.

I would also recommend Radiolab. It's kind of science meets philosophy. They have a very unique sound which a lot of people love, but not everyone.

You may be sensing an NPR theme here, I almost exclusively listen to NPR. They may not be up your alley but I frequently listen to Diane Rehm and Fresh Air as well.
  • I listen to a lot fewer podcasts than I used to, but my favorites are:

Rob Has a Podcast - Rob Cesternino talks about reality tv. Mostly Survivor and Amazing Race. But they veer into other reality areas like Celebrity Apprentice and he's part of a group that does scripted tv too. He also produces a ton of content. So it's great because there's always something new to listen to.

Dusted - Lani Diane Rich and Alistair Stephens (both writers) talk about Buffy. From a literature/writing point of view. It's great. They have a website called StoryWonk where they also talked about The Outlander mini series and other writing related stuff.

I also have one about Friends (the tv show) that I just started because I'm watching Friends on Netflix. I also downloaded a few about Gotham (the tv show), but I have yet to listen to anything.

  • I love Freakonomics Radio. I also recommend This American Life, but it can be hit-or-miss. I like some episodes a lot better than others.
